“The Island of Dan Monroe”. 😮. Where common people are raised to the level of awesome with knowledge of movies, music and monsters shot right into their veins. Love the video ❤
😂great one!
I’ve been waiting for this one! It was filmed in the Virgin Islands; the United States Virgin Islands, on the island of St. Croix which is where I’m from. I was three years old in 1976 when this was filmed, and it was shot on the north side of the island in the rain forest. I remember being with my family at a beach named Cane Bay, and my dad said there was a movie being filmed a few miles up the road which was this one. The beach where Michael York landed was called Davis Bay where we would go body surfing years later, and now there’s a resort built on that location. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see any of the filming, but my mother did get to meet Burt Lancaster at a local supermarket; how cool is that?!

We used to call my Grandma's house "The House of Pain" when we were kids! LOL
Whoa there Dan, you put out a second video this week. " How cool is that"!
Haha yeah, feeling really energetic to get you guys some new content:-)
HG WELLS was way ahead of his time. Good video. Dan Monroe.
As a 17 year old in '77 I was absolutely in love with Barbara Carrera and saw the movie just for her. 😂 Another great video, Dan.
This movie deserves another watch. With so many wonderful movies from years past, we are only at the entrance to the rabbit hole. Wonderful episode!
Love to see a review of "The Keep"
I was just thinking about that!!!
On my list! Thanks so much :)
I'd like to see you feature another suspense film from 1977 The Deep with Robert Shaw,Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset! Remember the giant Morey ell?
On my list! Thanks so much :)
I remember JBs t-shirt.
burt lancaster was excellent as dr moreau and barbara carrera was such a babe in this film. and the creature make up was extremely scary. great flick.
I recognize that name! Looked her up, I saw her in Masada! She is a babe
Waiting on Dark Star 😅😊
The 1996 remake of "The Island Of Dr. Moreau" was written and initially directed by South Africa's Richard Stanley. John Frankenheimer was hired to replace him mid-stream and the movie was so badly received by critics and film goers alike that it almost scuppered Stanley's career as a movie director. He was relegated to writing a quartet of obscure B-movie psychological thrillers and horror flicks, beginning in 2002 through 2017. In 2019, he finally fully revived his career with a stellar, spine-tingling adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's "Color Out Of Space" for Elijah Wood's SpectreVision, (distributed by RlJE Films), which starred Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson. In 2020, just after the physical media release of "Color . . .", SpectreVision announced Stanley would write and direct a remake of "The Dunwich Horror" as the second instalment of a planned trilogy of films base on Lovecraft's books. That project seems to have unfortunately, disappeared from the radar and slipped into development hell since then. We still await news on its progress, four years later.
Anyone remember the giant turtle film from 1978 The Bermuda Depts, featuring Carl Weathers and Burl Ives? I loved this film as a kid!
The 1932 “Island of Lost Souls “ is a underrated horror classic.
It seems to always be included with the Universal horror classics since the 1990s home video releases anyway. Maybe Universal purchased the rights to it from Paramount?
@@danielrobinson5035 Agreed. ‘Lost Souls’ got to me when I was younger. As a budding sci-fi nerd I had learned to notice details, and I remember a scene where the shipwrecked visitor was sneaking around Moreau’s lab one night and found a live ‘ manimal’ , strapped down to a table under a sheet, as if he was dead, or just some project under development (which I guess he was). I of course noticed there was a strap across his neck, too.
I recoiled from such things, but I can watch ‘Chucky’ do his thing all night. My point is, IMHO, too many horror producers and directors have turned to borderline torture porn to elicit ‘horror’. They certainly aren’t turning out stuff you’d take a date to e.g. The Human Centipede, Hostel, the Saw series.
@@charlesbritzman501 Charles I couldn’t agree more. I saw this movie in the 60’s on TV when I was around 10. That last scene in the operating room stayed with me to this day. It went a lot harder that the Unniversal films of the same time although I love them
As well. The remakes never had the same punch.
Hey there Dan, you might find this funny, but when I was a kid I used to call this film; and I kid you not The Island of Dr. Monroe! Now how cool is that!😂
Hard to believe that I never watched this. Thanks, I always appreciate your uploads, and tonight was a surprise.
Same. I never even knew this version existed.
Great coverage Dan!
In the early seventies Roger Corman produced a version of this story it was called Twilight people and it was filmed in the philippines. It was a contemporary story for that time. And featured some interesting makeup effects and lots of action.
It featured an hilarious black panther woman character portrayed by none other than Pam Grier.😅
Don't think I've ever heard of that one. Thanks!
Another great video Dan! 15 year old me liked this movie in 1977, and 62 year old me still likes it when I see it today!
This is the best version of island of dr Moreau.. by a long stretch.. i was obsessed with h.g. wells as a child so this was right up my street
It's certainly light years better than that Brando abomination that's for sure.
Please review The Medusa Touch (Richard Burton) , scared me to bits as an 11 year old
On my list! Thanks so much :)
Another great memory Dan. I loved this too. I remember watching this in 1977 at the local drive-in. In my Mom and Dads Ford 1968 Country Squire station wagon with, my brothers and sisters.😊
I saw this in the theater at 12 years old. Let me tell you, Barbara Carrera was amazing, not just "OK". I was obsessed with her for years. How cool is that? I was happy to see her a few years later in the Bond movie "Never Say Never Again".
Despite being a huge Star Wars fan that summer, I was also a massive Michael York fan (thanks Logan Run) and saw this movie three times in the theater that summer.
You are speaking my language with every single video you make!
Another winner Dan!!! Would you believe I’ve never seen this film!! I will now. Stay well
To be honest, never saw it. Will have to check it out. Thanks Dan
Great video as always Dan and yes this movie freaked me out as a kid.
When I was a kid on weekends on the Late Show they used to show horror, fantasy and Sci-Fi movies here is where I saw it with my dad
Hey Dan, any update on the kolchak episodes that were written but never recorded ? Or is that a video for another day we have to wait for 😅 ? Cheers m8, lovin ur content 👍
Thanks for a yet another great video, Dan. And thanks also for keeping things so positive. We need more of that in this world and I, for one, really appreciate you for that. I clicked on this video pretty much as soon as you posted it. *_How cool is that?_*
Hey brother, just wanted to tell you that I love your sci fi videos, I'm an old fart of 64 and every Saturday night I get out my old movies and sci fi shows from the 50s through 80s but I always start off my night with your latest video it really sets the mood, keep up that great work my friend.
Thank you so much for the kind words!

(Oingo Boingo, "No Spill Blood") 🤘😄
I was looking to see if anyone else mentioned it! 💕
OMG, I didn’t know all those movies were connected. I loved the Food of the God and Empire of the Ants also. Throw in the Killer Shrews. What great low budget movies with a twist. Thanks, Dan!!!!!
Intelligent and well acted. Excellent movie.
Always look forward to your videos, brilliantly researched and a great production all around. Best wishes from the UK
Thanks Dan-awesome information and trivia about the film I knew so little of.
This is the first time I learned that AIP created a three film cycle of H. G. Wells films over the period 1976-77. I knew “Food of the Gods” was a Wells novel, but always thought “Empire of the Ants” was an original story treatment. Turns out the film is loosely based on a 1905 short story of his. How I wish they had forged ahead and created a triad of films featuring lesser known stories of Jules Verne (!)
Great video! I watched this movie on TV several times as a kid, maybe on TBS. It, "The Time MachIne" (1960), and "Time After Time" (1979) were how I discovered H.G. Wells. In addition to "Island of Lost Souls" (1932) and the 1996 remake, there were two unauthorized Philippines adaptations, "Terror Is a Man" (1959) and "The Twilight People" (1972).
Man do I love your channel great stuff brings me back to when I was a kid and my dad made me watch these movies! Love it your great
You were fortunate that your Dad had such great taste in movies.
One of my absolute favorite childhood movies! Thank you, Dan!
Always say ‘Waaaaay back’ like that from now onwards please. ;)
The Waaaaay Back Machine
I loved the movie! Michael York was awesome in everything I saw him in. And, ohmigish! The brain that wouldn't die scared me too- and I loved it! Weekend late night "Frightening Flickers with Gregory the Gravewalker" showed it it seemed like every few months :) Thanks for the memories...
Barbara Carrera is 78 years old? I just can't even right now..
Thanks for bringing back great memories. It's a wonderful escape from the world today
The 80s pop band Oingo Boingo made a song called "No Spill Blood" about the book, too.
Great video Dan. How bout a review on the movie Cat People goes right along with this one
On my list! Thanks so much :)
I saw this movie in the theater. I also read the book, in a Magnum "Easy Eye" paperback, but not sure before or after the movie. Was in high school at the time.
The Brain that wouldn`t die scared the carp out of me as a kid. Watched it on the Creature Feature.
The 70's was really a great time for practical special effects and makeup artists! This is my favorite version of the story.
Hi Dan. I'm 74 and saw all of the SI-Sf movies of the 1950s. If you haven't made a video of the movie THEM, I wish you would.
On my list for the future! Thanks so much :)
@@MoviesMusicMonsters Dan, thanks for your reply. Review one of Ed Woods's masterpieces to give us a good laugh.
That one 'kitten' ending idea was somehow in someone's thought when they remade The Fly with Jeff Goldblum the writer had a birth scene of a flybaby(maggot). This was a disturbing film for me.
And truly disgusting.
I don't know if Dan has done an episode on "The Fly," but that is one of my favorite horror films!
These days a certain fandom would call it "The Island of The Furries"
oh we'd do such a better remake! :)
Wow! I haven't seen this movie in years! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you...as always your pieces on older favorites are informative and I can't help but smile
Luv that you don't bash these movies. Great video. Very informative.
Thank you for this awesome trip down memory lane! Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this movie as a kid. You peaked my interest in it once again now I have to search my streaming services to see if it’s available thank you for such an awesome job on this video. Can’t wait for the next one! 👍
This reminds me... you should do an episode reviewing the early 1980s TV series flop "Manimal". It came right after (and likely inspired by) the makeup FX done for "American Werewolf in London" by Rick Baker.
On my list! Thanks so much :)
Even The Simpsons did a hilarious takeoff on this movie. 😅
I enjoyed this movie.
Please do 5 million years to earth! Love the quartermass stories.
On my list for the future! Thanks so much :)
Film adaptations were made in 1913, 1921, 1932, 1959, 1972, 1977, and 1996. The novel is so powerful, creepy, and compelling it's no wonder that generations of filmmakers have been drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I've watched at least scenes from most of them (including the early ones) and none have come anywhere close to capturing the skin-crawling primal revulsion Well's descriptions of the creatures creates. I think only now, with the present state of CGI, could it perhaps be done. (And it's hard to find a harsher critic of CGI effects than me! I'll take well-done makeup and practical effects over CGI, except in cases where the former just can't get the job done.)
That is very cool Diamond Dan! you rock!
Oh man, David Carradine. Kwai Chang Caine himself. As a kid growing up in late 70s NZ, never missed the Kung Fu repeats on TVNZ. As for The Island of Doctor Moreau, this is my preferred version. We shall not talk of the 1996 version.
This was awesome.. but whatever happened to space 1999?
I can't be certain, but I think Dan covered it already. Search through his past videos.
Hey Dan. Another great episode. This movie scared me to death!!!
Strange movie. I saw it on TV probably in the early 1980s when I was in my twenties. If I had seen it as a kid, I would have been spooked. Richard Basehart was Admiral Nelson not some half animal. Burt Lancaster could play just about any part in any movie. The remake wasn't bad but it had a tough act to follow even with Brando.
Thanks, Dan, that was great. I’ve always wanted to see the Charles Laughton version. I read the Wells book as a teen and I can see that I need to revisit it.
It turns up on Svengoolie from time to time if you have MeTV, among a couple of other places.
Glad that some of the amazing makeup survived!
Let's not forget the lyrics "Are we not men? We are Devo!" by Devo(lution)!
I saw this film at the movies, and yes, I thought she was going to turn around and be a panther woman. I, being a fan of "The Island of Lost Souls," enjoyed it.
Hell yeah, Dan! Loved the original with Michael York. Read the book by H.G., too. Read a lot of his stuff. Dad would take us to see the movies. Fun childhood that way.
I remember the Island of Dr. Moreau, Dan; it was very weird.
I was unaware this film existed! Another one to search for now. I did read the novel. And saw the 90s film. 😊
It's available on Tubi
Well done as always Dan!!!
As a teen in tbe 70s I saw this with a girlfriend, it was a good one for getting close during tbe scary bits 👍
I remember much more about the voluptuous woman I saw this with than the fine points of the film.
@@ClutchCargo001 You need to watch it again by yourself so that you can actually concentrate on the film this time.🤭
@@vickyabramowitz2885 Oh, I've watched it several times since then. Can't go into detail, but I still find Beth MUCH more memorable.
No mention of the band Oingo Boingo? They did a song called 'No Spill Blood', inspired by this movie and the song even references the lines 'What is the law?' and 'Back to the house of pain!' Great song written by the master Danny Elfman!
Great retrospective ! Dr Moreau creeped my young ass out, too (both versions) anytime people are strapped to gurneys and sedated by mad doctors bent on surgical nightmares (Human Centipede) my gut wrenches and I get a stink in my mind it may take days to rid me of.
ANYWAY you mentioned a band called House of Pain, but never mentioned an even more famous band - DEVO - who put out an album in 1978 titled “Are we not men ? We are DEVO !”
Excellent job Dan. Terrifying movie 🙀😂
I love this channel so much. It takes me back to my childhood, away from all of today's craziness!
Knew of the movie (Michael York version) but hadn't seen it. Now, I'm inclined to watch it given the very good review.
Wow, you always bring memories back. I saw Food of the gods and Empire of the ants in the cinema. Had to sneak in for Food of the Gods as I was v underage.
Joan Collins was in Empire of the Ants, I think.
Two earlier feature film riffs on "The Island of Doctor Moreau," produced in the Philippines, are Gerardo de Leon's TERROR IS A MAN (1959), starring Francis Lederer, and Eddie Romero's THE TWILIGHT PEOPLE (1972), starring John Ashley and featuring Pam Grier as Ayesa the Panther Woman. The latter film also weaves in a bit of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME into the narrative.
I know what you mean Dan about movies that scared us as kids. For me, it was "The Power" and "Three Million Years to Earth". I was 10!
Not to embarrass you, but it was Five Million Years to Earth. It ran constantly on TV in the 1970s and 1980s.
@@starmnsixty1209 See. It scared me so damn much I forgot the title
Will you be doing a video on the movie SSSSSS with Dirk Benedict? I enjoy every video you post.
On my list for the future! Thanks so much :)
Oingo Boingo has a song called "No Spill Blood." I don't know that it's specifically about this movie, but you quoted most of the lyrics in this video.
Thanks to you Dan, I'm going to watch this movie with a fresh set of eyes. I've seen bits and pieces of it before on TV but not the whole entire movie. Judging from your awesome critique on classic movies, you should consider critiquing new movies when they come out. I would definitely follow and adhere to your opinion on a new release. I just love your channel! You're awesome man!
Dan, your reminiscing about your favorite movies as a kid frightening parallels my childhood. When you mentioned the Omega Man (my favorite movie) and then had that still from The Brain that wouldn't Die! with the guys arm torn out of the socket absolutely flipped my out as a kid too! I knew Kevin Burns in Film School and I grew up nearby you too in Rochester. Sure we aren't brothers, separated at birth lol?
Great video!!!! Thanks and fun as always!!!!
Oingo Bingo did a song called "No Spill Blood" which covers the laws of Dr. Moreau.
I was 6 when this came out & my dad took me to see it. It was awesome & scary for a 6 year old!
When I was a kid, the original monsters Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman used to scare me.
I have seen all 3 versions of this movie but I like Michael York version the best. Even read the book.
Great job, Dan!!!
Nice photo of your house. 😊
Frankly, I prefer the 1932 Island of Lost Souls but the Michael York Island of Dr. Moreau isn't bad, either.
The 1978 version certainly blows the 1992 disaster out of the water. Both are playing on TH-cam occasionally.
I am with you on this one Dan. Creeped me out. This movie disturbed me deeply. I was 15 with I 1st saw it. Yea, it was scary but what really got me was the plight of the hybrid people and how horribly mistreated they were and how unethical the whole idea was. Even then, it was understood that someone just might try to do this kind of thing. Horrifying!
You do a good job, Dan.
Thanks so much!
You know its a good morning when the first thing you hear is "Soooooooooo what ever happened to" :)
Wow! So there was an 'Island of Dr.Moreau' before the one with Val Kilmer.
I watched the 1977 movie but i dont remember when..and i had remembered scenes from it..but never made the connection that it was island of dr moreau...i am going to go find this version online and watch it
Absolutely, and it was freaking awesome :-)
Uh yeah. And The Island of Lost Souls from the 1930's 🤓😎✌🏼
I thought that Michael York really brought a lot of intensity to the part, where he's being dehumanized by Moreau, struggling to maintain his humanity. I became a fan of his from LOGAN'S RUN a year earlier, of course, and obviously enjoyed his work in THE THREE MUSKETEERS and its sequel. He portrayed John the Baptist in JESUS OF NAZARETH, the same role that Charlton Heston played in THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD -- basically, a ranting preacher whipping up the masses with rhetoric and passion, kinda like when Logan and Jessica return to the domed City and exhort the citizens not to go into the Carrousel ceremony. There's a fine line between delivering lines of dialogue with fiery passion and 'chewing-the-scenery', and Michael York, I felt, always knew how to play it just right.
well, and then he popped up in 'Austin Powers international man of Mystery' :)
@@eclipsehorse8693 It's my suspicion that Mike Myers was a fan of Michael York's work, and since AUSTIN POWERS was a project pretty much conceived by him -- fresh from a very successful stint on SNL and the WAYNE'S WORLD movies -- he had carte blanche to cast anybody he wanted, and since he needed SOMEBODY to play his MI6 boss/handler Basil Exposition, he (probably) sought out Mr. York for the role.
And here's the thing about stage-trained actors: they act in Dramas AND they act in Comedies. Why SHOULDN'T Michael York act in a comedy film that had a good chance of making a lot of money???
@@patricktilton5377 oh he was loads of fun, and as someone who grw up with his movies, I spotted him right off the bat. Jenny Augutter , who starred with York in Logans Run, was in Captain America The Winter Soldier
The remake's story is, in itself, insane. It's one of those where the behind the scenes is way better than the film itself.
I don't love this movie, but I do love every video on this channel! The movie does have a great cast.
This one scared me, yet intrigued me as a young man. It came on late one night and I never forgot it!
