I think it was all about what the director wanted from them. Tamil director thought his audience can't understand subtle acting and made her do over acting. Tamil audience are not used to seeing subtle changes in acting because those directors take the easy path of making the actors over act than using directorial techniques to highlight the subtle changes..
What jyotika tried is to imitate shobhana but she doesnt know dancing hence roamed in the roam and also while trying to immitate she did was all overacting loud noising and killed the character itself

I feel no one can reach Shobhana's magnitude.... in dance or acting ....keeping apart that jyotika is not a professional dancer, she tried her best and succeeded too to some extent.....but the makers of chandramukhi and other remakes spoiled the originality by making it a spirit story.....the original manichitratazhu was about split personality.....the original movie clearly specifies it as fantasy and psychological thriller ......not a horror movie.....so some who are saying that they did not find Shobhana's performance scary understand that the makers never wanted to make a horror movie......unlike all the remakes who ended up making horror movies.....🙂

Not being a part of South india, i say that Jyothika did complete justice to the role of Nagavalli. I have actually watched all the versions of this movie and Jyothika was unanimously the best. The level of madness this role needed was put in only and only by Jyothika and no other actress.
