    Fun fact: in the story of David and Goliath, some accounts speak of David going into that fight with a “staff and sling”. It just so happens that an age old technique used by shepherds was to affix the sling to to the staff, leaving one end with a loose loop to allow that end to function much like the knotted end on your hand sling. When flung forward, the staff acts much like the arm of a trebuchet, increasing the power a great deal. Additionally, this method allowed one to keep the sling loaded easily while walking, simply by holding the cord against the staff close to the pouch. Just a fun little factoid, doesn’t really contribute a whole bunch but might be interesting to know!

      Someone found the riverbed mentioned in the story to find what kind of rocks David used. Apparently the rocks there are especially dense. The weight they have according to ballistics tests showed the mass and speed's energy would be comparable to a bullet.

      Goliath told David "Am I a dog? that you come at me with sticks?"
      According to some Jewish folks Moses staff was passed down into David's hands, not sure myself, but it certainly is entertaining to think about, and ironically would make sense that particular staff was used with a sling to put Goliath to sleep.

    I made one of these when I was a kid decades ago. It along with instructions from some article had me slinging pretty well after a while. The wind up technique was entirely different from this video but as long as the result works, it shouldn't matter. I was proficient with a sling shot as well. I had a .22 lr rifle available to me, but the primitive weapons bad their own appeal.
    I hope to build a trebuchet someday too. I'm 70 but still a kid at heart. :-)

      i am 62 and have not seen one of these since i was a kid. we used to make them out of an old shoe tongue and use laces as the string. me being quite young could never hit much of anything with them but i could throw rocks far. my cousin who was 8 years older than i was more into using the sling as we called it.

    • @paulk5311
      @paulk5311 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @Hubert Cumberdale yeah i am of the opinion that staying a kid at heart helps keep one young. i now have 3 grandsons ranging from 5 to 9 and i enjoy getting outdoors with them and showing them some of the things we did when we were kids. i think that is something this generation has lost, just getting out with their children and doing things that people did back years ago.
      i grew up in the 60's reading about tom sawyer and huck finn and watching them on the tube along with tarzan, jungle jim and such. it helped that we could go into the woods and play as there is nothing like spending the summer barefooted in the great outdoors. i am so glad there were no video games when i was young nor cable tv or anything good on during the day. i might have been tempted to stay indoors more but maybe not. our mom would run us out of the house after breakfast anyway.
      i miss those days.

      A slingshot can kill a rabbit.
      A sling is made by cordage and is not elastic.

I learned to use a sling from a book published by Loompanics, more than twenty years ago, and though I am rusty, now, I can still see how much effort you've used in learning to use a sling. I was not given the figure eight technique, only the overhand and underhand. It works for you. Also, your vid was informative, not full of self-promotion. I, too, don't like to use the ring finger in the stability loop. In fact, the book I learned from had a knot for the stabilizing, and the throwing string had nothing but finger pressure to keep it in place. Your way is much better. I tried it. Thank you so much!

    Baeleric slingers were some of the most renowned slingers historically. The roman empire utilized them as auxilia in their legions. They were even known to use cast lead projectiles to great effect!

    • @DETHREAPER11
      @DETHREAPER11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, effective range of about 100 meters. Earliest snipers basically.

    • @Jafmanz
      @Jafmanz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luis archers would have greater effect, mainly because an arrow can still pierce armor and kill where as a lead bullet 'gladies' would merely break a bone at worst through armor. 15 miles from me a collection of Roman gladies was found and each had holes drilled in them it is believed these holes created a whistling/buzzing sound for psychological effect on the enemy. these particular bullets were used by standard legionaries. as for the effect vs archers well... range on the larger (50g) non whistle bullets is estimated at max 200m even so I think if you had a choice of 100 archers vs 100 slingers you would take the archers.

    • @thunderfoot11
      @thunderfoot11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      However, ancient archers were not as effective over range. It wasn't until the mid 900 - 1000 that the bow became an effective weapon, mostly due to poor engineering techniques. Hornbows being an exception of course (which is why the Huns used them). It is conjectured that slingers actually had range over bows in the ancient era. Which is why the Roman army went with slingers over archer auxillia.

    • @Jafmanz
      @Jafmanz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      THunder you have to consider the vast time period over which the argument might go in different directions. at 43 AD I chose that because it is the period from which onward I have studied. Roman archers were using composite bows (wood,bone,horn,sinew) and were using a variety of different arrow heads as can be seen from archeological finds, broadheads, triple broadheads ( 3 barbs, not coming out without massive injury) bodkins ( not sure what they called them then) and a few others. for information on Syrian archers AD 140+ Cohors Prima Hamiorum Sagittaria. and you will see lots of information supporting sophisticated and deadly effect at 200 paces. bare in mind these men were simply hunters using hunting weapons!!! a some miles north of me they were stationed at bar hill. much information can be seen there also if you come :) I live between Adrians wall and the Antonine wall. my lands are rich with archeology and information. Up until around the 3rd century the primary function of auxillia archers was hunting that much we can agree on perhaps? and yes the HUNS did change the function and role of archers within the roman army dramatically but that is mainly down to the mounted archer and the versatility it brought.

    • @thunderfoot11
      @thunderfoot11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well said, my point was just that slingers and velities had more of a military role through the creation of the original auxilia and it wasn't until the Marian reforms that archers (sagittarii) became an accountable occurrence. And that was still around 29 BCE. And as you stated, they were primarily in the habit of screening and hunting, which was much less direct than slingers or velities. And my point was more to the usefulness of the sling in historical context versus the modern assumption of its inferiority to the bow.
      Engineering has changed that balance of power, it much like the argument which is better a modern compound bow or a 15th C. arquebus? Obviously the the arquebus, because firearms are vastly superior to bows right? ;)

      Oh yes. The Romans were crazy about slingers. More so than archers even. They were most likely a holdover from the time (most of the republic period) when a legionaire was obligated to provide his own arms and armor and provisions. Slingers accompanying the legion provided a means for even the poorest among the Capitus Sensi to contribute to the common defense. They were so valued though, that the more accurate among them were even provided with lead and molds to produce a sort of ammunition called "glandes"- at the public expense(!), which, if you know anything about the early republic, is extraordinary. They seem not to have fought WITH the (proper heavy infantry) legionaries so much as being a sort of opening act, harassing the opposing force as they tried to get into formation. They must have been effective, because the Roman legion was actually pretty open to innovation (or at least variation), and the slingers remained a common feature for around a thousand years.

    Good discussion about an often forgotten weapon. As you said, many ways to initiate - clockwise at the side - counterclockwise at the side - overhead helicopter style - single swing - and the "figure 8". Of those styles I agree with you that the figure 8 is best.
    There is a method that gets forgotten even more than the Shepard's sling itself. .... Use a wooden shaft approximately 5 feet long (stout enough and long enough to use as a walking staff). Prepare the sling as you have, but with two loops. The first loop is hard tied approximately 4 to 6 inches from the top (set in a shallow groove to ensure it stays there). The second loop is loose enough to slip off the tip. To use load a rock and swing the staff two handed towards the target. Similar to a two handed tennis swing or a cricket pitch (something along those lines). The speeds and force achievable are startling.
    I used to wonder why the Bible says that David took his staff with him to fight Goliath. After learning about this method of slinging, I'm pretty well satisfied in my own mind that this is the method David used.

    I made a sling back in 2004 and I still have it. I can put a 3/8" steel ball bearing completely thru a car door! It is part of my EDC, even today. It's very easy to get "rusty" with this sort of thing, so don't get good and think you've got it. A few months will go by and it's like learning the thing all over again! But even so, it's like riding a bike once you've mastered the technique, which doesn't take very long. The results are astonishing. I also like hurling paint balls with my sling. Eggs. Tomatoes. Pretty much anything that'll fit in the pouch.
    In 2005 we went to Israel and I brought the sling I made. Our tour guide brought us just north of the Dead Sea and pointed out a spot in the Negev where (he said) David had selected the stones he used in his epic battle with Goliath. I have no idea to fact check that statement, but there is a dried river there so I gathered a batch of stones and kept them as souvenirs. If it isn't generally known, that area between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea is technically the West Bank and palestinian territory. Our tour guide was enthused with my sling and wanted to try it out, so I was like, okay sure, do it like this, blah blah blah. He launched a stone straight up and it started to arc backwards towards the highway!! A busy road where most of the traffic are palestinians. I watched the rock with horror as it came down and was significantly relieved when it came down just a few inches away from the pavement. No broken windshields, no angry palestinians, no white American hostages that day.
    Anyway, excellent video, eventhough I'm commenting on it 2 years too late...

    As the weight of the projectile increases, so does it's potential energy. By increasing the velocity, you also increase potential energy (striking force). My suggestion therefore is to sling a heavier object (like an engine block) at a greater speed, by using a longer sling. My calculations show greater TH-cam viewers with that set up. You're welcome.

    As a project I made a few traditional greek style slings for my son and myself. I tried a bunch of different styles of grip and of swing and found I was the most accurate by far eith the loop around my middle finger. The swing that gave me the greatest accuracy started off holding the stone in the pouch hanging straight down. From there I'd swing it gently to the side, just to get build a little pendulum type momentum. From there I'd let it swing back behind me one time, then I'd bring it around me in a motion similar to throwing a lariat, over my head once, then I'd release it with a motion similar to pitching an overhand fastball. It wasn't great for hitting things at very close range, but at about 25+ feet it became incredibly accurate. It was also good for throwing the stone a VERY long way.

    A war sling is similar but shorter, uses a single arc over-hand throw. A helicopter or figure 8 throw won't work with hundreds of Roman auxiliary troops standing side by side. Slings are fun, though.

      Sportsquirrel Slings were actually longer most of the time as they were used more like light artillery than they were like bows.
      There were tons of techniques used, there's plenty that work and plenty that don't but there is military depiction of helicopter and I believe figure 8 styles shown being used

    Is it called a Shepard Sling because of David?

      It was used by many shepherds in that time, but is more popular due to his bible story, yes.

      Zane Aguilar More popular with those whose *only* historical education comes from the Bible, though I hope those are few. People who are somewhat versed know they were used all around the Mediterranean, North-western Europe and the Middle East for millennia by both civilians and even militaries, in huge groups to harass light infantry from range. The name isn’t “Shepard sling”, it’s just “sling”. Shepard sling may be the name of the product he’s trying to sell here
