Graflex shutter demo on wartime SG. After filming this I loosened the shutter spring back by 2 revolutions as I had worked the shutter mechanics a bit more to loosen up the lube inside the spring.

I'm glad you have the drive to keep these classics going. Keep a clean work area. Put everything on a towel to prevent marring and catch loose parts. Put those screws in a dish, magnetic ones work very well. I've lost many manhours looking for those tiny screws, springs, etc that rolled off the bench in my early years.

Thanks, I just got the gumption to work on the tension in my "parts" camera - pacemaker speed. I came to the same conclusion, I started with the 'T" and 'O' settings because that was where the least tension was. I fixed that and then the other speeds looked more or less great. Then I was brave enough to pull out my primary pacemaker speed and do that. Pretty easy and getting it all lubricated worked well. Thanks for the advice to only go as deep as necessary to manage the issue. I have to keep myself from opening everything up. My parts camera is rapidly becoming a daily driver! I just need to build a back for it. Thanks again, you expertise and advice is helpful in a lot of ways!

Thank you Sir! Seeing someone manipulating the curtain was all I needed.
The problem on my 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 Speed Camera ended up being much simpler and easy to fix: when I got the camera the focusing glass was broken. I removed all the loose pieces, but one shard had lodged itself between the camera body and the lower curtain spool, creating friction.
Removef the shard and now the camera goes to O/T without issues.

I always wondered why the say curtain for the shutter mechanism. I didn't see any curtain when I was opening my film SLR or when I was removing the lenses of my mirrorless camera. I was seeing just many blades that were moving upwards and downwards. No I understand what a real shutter curtain is.

I have a Speed Graphic like this, but the FP shutter release is different. I don't have a lever on the right side where the cock mechanism is. I only have a TRIP BACK FRONT switch and cannot get the FP shutter to release.

I have a 2 1/4x3 1/4. I would need to remove the flash handle and the range finder to be able to rotate the plate as you show. Is that what it takes? Thanks for the video.

Cool to see someone working with a Graflex. Graham do you have any footage of reconditioning the faux leatherette covering or removing it and taking it down to the wood and refinishing the wood? Thinking of doing that with a graflex I acquired.

    • @GraflexParts
      @GraflexParts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've moved channels- but I don't currently have a video about refinishing the wood. It's a fairly simple procedure that mainly involves patience! :)

@@GraflexParts What's the new channel? Does it still involve working with Graflex cameras?

@@gcnphilly Yes! This new 'Graflex Parts' channel just follows the same branding/ aesthetic as the rest of what I'm doing.
Also worth noting that I have a passion for other brands large format SLR's and work with them a lot too! :)

Hi, have another question as I was exciting to discover your video. How do you remove the gear panel that you showed? I have a Series D and the aperture tension levers don't work that well. I'm able to turn the shutter cocking mechanism only to the first setting 1/8 which is used for speeds of 350th to 1,000th of a second. However, when I press the curtain release lever to slow down the shutter speed (release the tension) it only responds once. So it'll go from 1/8 on the indicator to 3/8 but not beyond that. So I'm not able to get to the 3/4 and 1 1/2 curtain aperture ranges. Any thoughts on what that might be? I think I need to remove the mechanism and just clear the gears but when I take off the screws it still doesn't come off. Is there another step to that process? Thanks! Cheers!

You may find better success with this more recent tutorial that explains a 'catastrophic loss of tension' scenario.

Thanks a lot for making this video. For the gear piece you held in your hand, could you do a video to show how to remove and put it back? If it’s too much trouble could describe briefly about the procedure? Does it involve and spring or tension adjustments? I have a 3A with mirror mechanism inside. Shutter should be triggered with a lever on the other side of the camera but now I have to manually raise the mirror. I figure the gear got gummed up won’t provide enough spring tension to raise the mirror. It only works as should be when I point the front of the camera towards ground so the gravity will kick in to compensate the lost tension required to raise mirror after shutter lever being pushed. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ethan! Our channel is now over at th-cam.com/video/kZuo_j1DfKs/w-d-xo.html
In regards to your question; I could make a video demonstrating putting the aperture selector mechanism on the camera but it would be irrelevant for the camera you're working on. graflex SLR's and Speed Graphics only share the principle of the focal plane shutter but little to none of the same mechanical design. The mirrors in SLR's are controlled by separate springs that are not attached to any of the shutter mechanism but they are known to get dirty or corrode. The aperture selector (shutter release) in an SLR is actuated by the mirror.
Think of it like a Rube Goldberg machine. You release the mirror which is fixed to a shaft. When the mirror flips up, the shaft it's fixed to will spin. That shaft comes out the side of the camera and is fixed to a little lever. That lever then moves and presses on a second lever which releases the shutter curtain allowing it to fire. The spring that creates tension to roll the curtain is contained inside of the lower curtain roller/scroll. Graflex 3A's are also a tad different than the rest of the SLR's graflex made. (more compact, different orientation/arrangement of parts, certain components aren't as easy to access, etc)
I hope this helps! I can be reached easily via email too, I have a convenient form that can be found on my service page here: www.graflexparts.com/service-department
      Cheers,
      Graham
