I’m currently a IT Manager for a non-profit Heath facility. I started as helpdesk there I worked closely to the IT VP and picked up a lot over the years. It’s a SMB. So I went from Helpdesk to Managing all of the helpdesk myself for a few years, I worked on some certs to help educate myself on areas I was week. I’m very self motivated and type A. Answering the phone got me used to dealings with vendors. I then moved into a Systems Manager role and Documented so many things and managed the new helpdesk staff. Then moved into the IT Manager role where over 10yrs there and everything I learned “Jack of All Trades” came together and do basically Everything he mentions in this video. If you naturally are a leader and are organized and meticulous person but also enjoy IT. You are probably prefect for this role.
I’m going in for IT Management and then going into coding boot camp after that so I’ll have a broader base of knowledge with a bit of programming to start with. I considered computer science but that is mostly coding.
I'm glad you have mentioned how IT Managers need to be all up to date with the latest technology. This is something we've seen really pick up pace over the last few years as a change in IT networks (moving to Cloud etc) really introduces a lot more potential technology to a business. So it's not just understanding the network, it's also understanding what a change in the network will enable you to do after that. Certainly, the 'silo' mentality is now coming under more and more pressure. Cheers.
i think i understand what this means. but the silo mentality can be safe as well. But with the cloud and etc. People should definitely expand more into cloud more.
At this point if you want to be a successful IT Manager in the long term you need to have project management skills, some biz dev skills, and executing on transformational initiatives.
Great video! Absolutely spot on! It is such a vast and huge responsibility! It’s not your typical manager job! From hands on to high level strategic thinking! It don’t stop until the casket drops! 😂
I am currently a junior in high school, and I am debating a career as a computer engineer or an IT manager. What major would an IT manager require? An information and Technology major, Computer science major, or a computer engineering major?
Hey Sheba Ayo, If you are already in IT that's great, just keep going with that and learn as much as possible. If you don't work in IT starting in a helpdesk role will help. IT managers do work remotely also, but could visit the office from time-to-time to meet with their IT teams or others in the organisation. Depends on the organisation. Hope that helps
@@TechWithEmilio sorry but what certs could I get to get started on becoming an IT manager? I was thinking CompTIA Sec+ and Project+ maybe and Cisco CCNP but what else should I get?
Hey, thanks for the comment. It really varies from company to company, and country to country. I am based in Australia and I would estimate between $120-$200k depending on experience and level of responsibility.
there are some training courses, but aren't always necessary. Best a good understanding across multiple technology functions (Systems, Network, Security, Process), and learning how to translate and articulate technical things to non technical people...especially if these are the people you need to convice to approve your IT budget. Hope that helps
@@TechWithEmilio Hello I not understand why you point people to go in System administration,Network adm. to become IT Manager. IT Manager not need to know those kind of stuff,i mean they not need to know about Active directory,Windows server,Switches ,Routers (how to connect router, switch,DNS etc.) As IT Manager you need to motivate people in that company what they must do according to latest technology. Example we must put new routers on 5GHZ or we must be careful when opening email against malware links. So i think IT Manager just only talk with programmers, designers and bring new latest technology ideas. IT Manager not need to know PHP,HTML AND CSS. His job is to pull up the company with latest technology with meetings,to talk with them. So the main thing for IT Manager is that he is always up to date with latest technology for particular company. Now tell me if I'm right.
