The 'Paatr-Kaars'; as the Thatheras actually are- the ones creating different 'paatrs' (vessels).
With a unique ethnic & historical identity, their exquisite skills are passed down from one generation to another orally. The hammered beating sound is the announcement of the rhythmic metalwork going on somewhere. Drawing their identity from the craft, thatheras have transformed over time leading to fulfilment of contemporary needs. Someone aptly remarked, 'Indian Craft is like an ocean', & Thatheras are certainly one beautiful & rare oyster of this deep ocean.
P-TAL aims at reviving the dying craft form of the indigenous Thatheras community of Jandiala Guru, Amritsar. The Thatheras of Jandiala Guru are a community of skilled craftsmen who specialize in the traditional technique of making hand crafted brass,copper and bell metal utensils by hammering metal sheets. This unique craft of the Thatheras of Jandiala Guru in Amritsar is the first craft of India to be inscribed in the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
