What some people might be missing as well, in that first clip of Gene, he's clearly focusing on playing the crowd and building hype as opposed to laying down a heavy baseline. A good performer doesn't just play their instrument, but they play the crowd as well, get them riled up and excited! Especially considering a lot of people who go to concerts don't necessarily have the expendable income to do it whenever, it's usually something they save and plan for, and you want to give those people a good show! When my band was performing (small deathcore garageband, our biggest show was like...20 or 30 people lol) I had this thing I did which was basically just making random guttural sounds. It was simple, easy, but the crowd would always reply in turn, so while it wasn't a "display of my true vocal talent", it got the crowd engaged and excited! KISS is doing it on a much grander scale than a few 20 year olds like me and my band were back in the day, but the same concept still applies! ^-^
I mean he sings and plays bass and made a lot of money and fans. Sounds like a good musician to me. People really over think music. Rhythm and melody on whatever instrument you enjoy that's all music is
@@kckillakrack9714 Well said! I think Nirvana is a great example, their guitar work is not all that difficult to learn. But it was never intended to be some super complicated technical masterpiece, it was meant to sound good and invoke emotion, and it certainly does that!
I love your content! It helps me connect to my brother, who passed over 20 years ago. He played bass, along with other instruments, but mostly saxophone. Thanks for doing what you’re doing. I SLAP for my little brother. I think he would have appreciated you.
Right??? I was gonna say it was today when I learned anyone thought he was controversial. His playing on Stadium Arcadium is probably my biggest influence to start playing myself, absolutely incredible bass album.
Flea actually started on saxophone, which influences the way he plays. I saw a video where they played some of his lines on Sax and they sound great. Which isn’t a good or bad thing in terms of his bass playing it’s just a unique influence
Once people start referring to you as one of thee greatest bassists of all time it places a great big target on your noggin. And all the haters come out. Also I remember SO MUCH HATE with RHCP turning the corner with commercial success.
Just subbed. Can’t understand why I’ve just recently had you come up in my feed. Especially with all the music/instrument vids I watch. And I love the Peter Stormare vibe from the old VW commercials lol 👍
I recently had this argument with a kid just learning guitar that many virtuoso guitar players have this problem. They are technically amazing and have great skills but can't necessarily write a catchy song.
@@xMcWeenxI just started learning guitar too and had the same argument with this dude probably in his 30-40s that thought every guitarist other than tim Henson was trash lol
@@xMcWeenx That's kind of a different thing though. There's serving the song whether it's catchy or not, and then there's writing catchy songs. There's plenty of good music where the point isn't to be catchy. The artistic vision for a lot of music isn't about chasing earworms.
@@herpyderpy4366 I've had similar discussions about various forms of expression. The world of literature needs its Shakespeares as much as it needs it's Stephen Kings. The art of music must come in just as varied forms and the arrogance some music fans show has them missing out on some wonderful experiences. We need our Bachs and our Beethovens, our Beatles and our Rollings Stonse, our Cat Stevens and Leonard Cohens, and our Taylor Swifts and Lady Gagas. All forms of expression are there to distill the human condition down into a form that we can share. Great pop tunes that makes you just wanna get up and dance is just as important as the experimental artist creating unique and complex soundscapes.... the key, I think, is the artist following their instinct as a creator and not simply chasing a quick buck... that invariably produces work that satisfies no-one.
Naomi Yang of Galaxie 500 is a great bassist. She has some great simple bass lines played high on the neck that give beautiful contrasting melodies and add so much to the tone to their songs.
I was a bass player in an indie rock band for a long time. For a long time, I always thought I lacked as much talent as other musicians and bass players. As I got more compliments throughout playing live and recording, I realized that I love the way I play. I’m not as technically gifted as other friends in the bass community, but my playing and style is unique, and my own sound! I genuinely love the way I play now, and haven’t heard a lot of people who play like me.
the only recognition she has and the only reason she obtains this attention has nothing to do her being a bass player. it has everything to to shes sexualy attractive female, being seductive. her way to stand out. she could play air bass for all that matters and get the same attention regardless. skill isnt the subject here and people need to stop pretending it is about her ability to play bass.
My son introduced me to Manëskin. I didn’t know Victoria was the bassist but before I did find out, I always thought that the bass lines were pretty good. The first song I’ve heard was “Beggin’” and being a decent cover, the first thing that caught my attention was the bass line. I guess with recent performances people have started to question her bass playing ability but I think it’s only because she’s showing so much skin. I can’t believe people would question Flea though. One person who I do question their skills, at least for live performances is Lars Ulricg of Metallica. I find his drum solos uninspiring. But he does great stuff for their recorded songs.
Lars isn't a particularly good drummer, but he's an integral part of Metallica being as successful as they are. He is talented, worked hard and had vision and business sense. He helped write most of their stuff, and at his best he really did serve the song. He's annoying live because he speeds up all the time and can be quite sloppy, but nobody's perfect.
@Patrick-857 when people make millions playing an instrument the idea that people make mistakes goes out of the window for me. I am a musician surrounded by great musicians not making even close to 100 000 per year and they all can keep a tempo. Something so basic as keeping tempo with the amount of years he’s played wouldn’t land him a job anywhere. It’s only because he’s part of that band that he can get away with it. At that level you need to be better at your instrument and not struggle with the basics. Look at Ringo Star, not a phenomenal drummer in terms of showing of but he knew how to do the basics well. Because of that I respect Ringo even though he made more than almost any drummer while being quite mid. As I said People don’t make mistakes at that level for that kind of money. If they do they are incompetent and lucky someone else is carrying them.
They also dub a ton of his bass lines. They’ve got a great documentary the black album in which he couldn’t play through a single song without a mistake, so they just stitched a bunch of different takes together.
idk, man, ive always liked your videos and i still do. you do play, and you have good memes also, and it's that balance that is so great. and i loved this one especially, you're absolutely right, that people always find shit to hate on, just because they can't do anything cool themselves.
There is a difference between honest criticism and even feedback and just saying someone cannot play bass and in a derogatory way. Keep going Davie504. Continue your bass omniscience!
Ciao Davide, I'm an Italian bassist from Bologna and Gene Simmons was my first amazing inspiration too. I love many of his bass lines and his attitude on stage is simply the greatest of all time. Nobody will ever surpass what he created. Victoria, in a very few years made things that 99,99999999999999% of us can't even attempt to dream about. I'm "in Love" with her. Davide Biale is a FANTASTIC guy and simply the best bassist of the World. Trive❤
Here's mine: while he gets a lot of respect, Geddy Lee does not get enough. I once saw him singing lead, while playing the keyboard with one hand, while playing open strings on the bass with the other, while playing Taurus pedals. That is an incredible amount of skill.
Yeah I’ve always found it funny that the god of rock bass, who is in a band with the father of prog drums and a LEGENDARY guitarist goes largely unacknowledged by the mainstream of musicians, even bassists. Is Rush too “old school” nowadays?
At this point, Davie's headphones are the equivalent to Clark Kent's Glasses. Keen for some more genuine Davide Biale thoughts amongst the Slap hero of Davie504.
Flea was probably the first bass player I recognized as special and doing something unique, not hard to see. It took me a while to realize many of the bass players from my favorite bands, late 80’s/90’s were doing unique things that really made the songs sound the way they did, much more than just following the guitars.
You are right!!! In every way! Anyone who says Gene or Flea can't play bass doesn't know a thing about playing nor have they tried to mimic their playing. I have... Gene and Geezer Butler were both great players!
Davie got me motivated to play again. I just play for enjoyment though. But that's the point for me. The best advice I ever got was never store your bass in a case. Keep it right next to you and you will be 100% more likely to pick it up and play.
Davie you are one of one. Your work is amazing, funny and unique. There isn't even an imitation of you on this platform which says a lot more than anything I can say here. You've managed to make bass interesting to a lot of people who'd otherwise be wholly uninterested. You SLAP.
My favorite Bassist is Terrance Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, not because I think he's the best but because he was the best for Black Sabbath, for the music they created and the foundation they built for all who followed in the genres of heavy metal/heavy blues and heavy jazz.🖤
I work for Lamborghini. Usually people will give a thumbs up when they see the super car on the road. One day I broke down in the middle of the street, it would not restart. All the people that had to go around me cursed, gave me the finger and most people were happy that a Lamborghini broke down. Nobody offered help.. That day I saw the result of envy in the jealous faces that passed me. I didn't own the Lamborghini nor own one, I'm just work on them.. But I've experienced first hand what Davie504 is going through with fans that are flipping on his success and obvious talent. Feed off their jealousy and dive right into it. Be happy they want to be you. Be Happy you don't suck like them. Thanks for keeping it real!
I get what tou say and i totally understand it. For me it doesn't make sense that people just want that the rich become poor instead of themselves becoming rich. But in your case you may think that it's not only because of envy; people usually are busy, and they might think that a rich can take care of its own problems by itself, probably not all of these people are jealous but sometimes they just see a reason that they should stop what they are doing to try to help a rich. (of course, people will think that a lamborghini driver is a rich person) But what i don't understand is the people that really want rich people to have problems and not to keep getting richer. Like, i want to be a rich person and have a lamborghini, so why i hate it? I'm trying to become one, no reason to hate them. But even though a lot of people indeed are jealous, sometimes it's just that you don't have the time to help another person, but the reason was not because of envy.
@@JVSemLimites you're reasoning to why people didn't stop is probably true in another case but considering they mention the majority were flipping him off and cursing at him meant people were happy he was having a bad time because a perceived rich guy was having a bad day when in reality If someone looked past that and actually assisted they would have found out he didn't even own the Lamborghini. So I would say yes the majority were envious/ hateful.
@@Crumbz19 flipping a rich guy having a bad day is still jealousy and bitterness, even if the actual guy ain't rich. When people hate on you out of jealousy just remember the term "they hate us cuz they ain't us".

Detroit Rock City is definitely my favorite Gene Simmons bass line. The thing that I like about all of these bass players is that they play bass!!! I've been playing almost 41 years and for the most part, everything that I play makes the other musicians sound great. Bass is such an important element to a song because if the bass player changes one note, it can change the whole mood to the song. I'm not a super player but I'm sufficient in making the song sound as good as I can. Another great video.
I’ve never played an instrument, and I’ve been watching your videos since about 2016. I’ve always watched for your personality. You’re my favorite funny Italian man. 😂
Thank you for this video Davie! Lately, we've played with out band in TV, at the main chanell of our country, at a song contest, wich used to delegate to the Eurovisin song festival(Hungary isn't going anymore) and we've got a lot of negative comments. I felt so depressed after our show, even though, it was one of the biggest moment in my life. This video helped me a lot! Thank you very much!❤

Simple basslines are easy when you're playing in your bedroom for a minute with no metronome/drumbeat. Try doing it for 5 minutes straight, in time with the groove, while maintaining a stage prescence.
@@HeroinChrist my brother in christ you creeped my profile for videos from literally years ago for that? do better lmao not that I care to explain it to you but I've been in bands my whole life I would "even know that"
In the movie, "Eddie and the Cruisers 2" he explained to his lead guitarist not to play so many notes because no one would remember the solo. Fine example of this is the band Journey. You hear a Neal Schon of Journey guitar solo and it's catchy and you remember it, and you ALWAYS KNOW it's Journey. CHECK mate!
Great video, spot on. I grew up a huge KISS fan and while Gene “bass solos” aren’t more than a sound effect to his on stage antics, early KISS especially has some awesome bass lines. They walk around the fret board a lot and he is one of the pick players that I think sound really good….Black Diamond, She, Cmon and Love Me, great tone, punchy etc. Makes a great foundation for Ace’s riffs. As far as Sid goes, he didn’t even play bass on the famous “Never mind the Bollocks” album. He couldn’t. Here’s a fun fact, Lemmy was a friend of Sid’s back when he was in Hawkwind and the early days of Motörhead. He tried to teach Sid basic musicianship and said it was impossible. Do you know how bad you have to be to frustrate Lemmy in the early days when he was partying like crazy lol. Sid was a character and a stage presence but that’s about all he was in the Sex Pistols.
Flea, IMO, is one of the most musical people I've ever seen. As a teen, he played 2nd chair trumpet for the LA Philharmonic. He is on a level with Michael Jackson or Steven Tyler who have "got it". I haven't liked a RHCP album since Mother's Milk, but Flea is on my short list of favorite bassists/musicians and IMO, is an ultimate baddass.
I watched the drum and bass play video with flea so many times when I first started playing bass. It was my bass bible so to speak. Such a great video.
Victoria has such a massive stage presence and is really entertaining to watch, she definitely deserves her fame and spot in the band in my opinion. Really cool 😎
Sid Vicious was playing for bare necessities because he's playing a simple songs. Punk music whilst revolutionary at that time was kinda simple and formulaic in execution. Even the lyrics for the song were direct to the point, the playing was crude and simplistic with lots and lots of energy. That's punk rock whole appeals.
No, Sid was gimmick. The idea that you don't have to be able to play to make good music is the biggest fraud in punk rock. Everybody else in the band were pretty good musicians. Most punk rock is music that sounds way more simple and unskilled than it actually is.
This is a poignant and necessary video, delivered with your classic flair. I once saw victor wooten, in the passionate heat of an insane solo, flip his bass into the air, instantly disconnecting the cable and interrupting the song. Does this amateur mistake make him a noob? I THINK NOT!
That Flea solo sounds like it could've been in Toejam&Earl. Totally funky. Davie, if you get that Flea pedal, you should definitely JAM out some Toejam&Earl tunes
Flea is ridiculously good. I spent months thinking "this isn't that difficult" and playing along. Then one day I realized that I can be a very lazy listener some times. It's good if you want to simplify - not great if you want to emulate and improve.

Although you're a fantastic bassist, that is the least interesting thing to me about your channel, but I'm glad that you are and it just adds to the value. Davie with headphones: *CHECKMATE*
Geddy Lee had a great comment about touring with Kiss, "Say what you want about their music, but they knew how to give their audience a SHOW."
Yeah those clips were about Gene Simmons just being Gene Simmons, not him when he’s ripping on his bass.

I never thought there is one single person who doubts Flea’s bass paying abilities
Right??? I was gonna say it was today when I learned anyone thought he was controversial. His playing on Stadium Arcadium is probably my biggest influence to start playing myself, absolutely incredible bass album.
Flea is a good bassist but i dont like how he improvise
same people who question John Fruciante's guitar playing ability
Flea actually started on saxophone, which influences the way he plays. I saw a video where they played some of his lines on Sax and they sound great. Which isn’t a good or bad thing in terms of his bass playing it’s just a unique influence

TO SERVE
THE SONG
I recently had this argument with a kid just learning guitar that many virtuoso guitar players have this problem. They are technically amazing and have great skills but can't necessarily write a catchy song.
@@xMcWeenxI just started learning guitar too and had the same argument with this dude probably in his 30-40s that thought every guitarist other than tim Henson was trash lol
I've played bass for a band and i occasionally drastically simplified the original draft of the bassline because the song sounded better that way.

Flea also shows a lot of skin. Maybe those bass fans just don't like skin?

Ciao Davide, I'm an Italian bassist from Bologna and Gene Simmons was my first amazing inspiration too. I love many of his bass lines and his attitude on stage is simply the greatest of all time. Nobody will ever surpass what he created.

I was always a guitar player but Flea was the first bass player that made me want to try bass.
For me it was McCartney on Hey Bulldog
Flea was probably the first bass player I recognized as special and doing something unique, not hard to see. It took me a while to realize many of the bass players from my favorite bands, late 80’s/90’s were doing unique things that really made the songs sound the way they did, much more than just following the guitars.
For me it was Les Claypool.
Bootsy made bass cool to me.

Your delivery on this video was so funny -- you had me laughing so hard! Gotta watch more of your stuff to see if you're always this funny.

(of course, people will think that a lamborghini driver is a rich person)
But what i don't understand is the people that really want rich people to have problems and not to keep getting richer.
@@Crumbz19 yeah, in this case it does make sense
@@Crumbz19 flipping a rich guy having a bad day is still jealousy and bitterness, even if the actual guy ain't rich. When people hate on you out of jealousy just remember the term "they hate us cuz they ain't us".

Detroit Rock City is definitely my favorite Gene Simmons bass line. The thing that I like about all of these bass players is that they play bass!!! Bass is such an important element to a song because if the bass player changes one note, it can change the whole mood to the song.
