Very versatile both in terms of use and in terms of carry. And I sharpened the edges too to stretch it's versatility even more. I even contemplate serrations for the blade to eat through anything.
I've had this knife for a couple of years now and it's awesome. I carry it as a boot knife and it has a very quick deployment with a smooth and quality feel to it. It's also suitable for smaller hands as well as larger ones. This is a stabbing weapon, not a slashing weapon or cutting tool, hence only the tip being sharpened. This knife is fairly dull and very hard to give a decent edge to. But it will puncture whatever you put the force behind it for, and that's what it's there for.
do you see how high up the pocket clip is? that knife will carry deeply in your pocket so that only the ring will be visible. now imagine you're going down an ally and a guy grabs you from behind and is trying to choke you to death. do you want to be fumbling in your pocket to grab your pocket knife and then still have to take another precious second or two to open it or do you want to find the ring on this knife then pull it out and stab him in the arm in one fluid movement?
Alot of people dont seem to grasp the purpose this knife was designed for. Its to allow you to create distance from a grapple attack so you can transition to a side arm or primary weapon. It mounts in your rows of molle centre line on your armour cover. 440 c steel is perfect for this, its not a high end knife and it only has one purpose to fullfil. its not a survival knife. the program of combatives that goes with this knife is taught to SPECIAL OPERATIONS hence the name of the dagger.
They've come down to around $80 now at certain stores. Everybody either has this option or the Spartan Blades CQB Tool which is a better quality steel, a different metal finish, little bit larger sheath, yet you will pay an even greater price because it is a Spartan Blades product and it's made domestically here in the US.
Great for reverse or ice pick grip applications ! But due to straight design not so good for forward grip strikes ! Unless they can create a recurve in the handle design that will facilitate both grips for future upgrades. Thanks :)
Just to make things clear, this knife IS unpractical for things like oppening boxes and everything a Swiss army knife will do, but is a GREAT knife for self defense. I've had mine (the Spartan Blades one) for about a year now and i love it, it is a great EDC knife and probably one of the most practical self defense weapons i've seen along with karambits.
Very cool to look at and I get the idea behind it especially the semi sharpened tip. Itd be a no brainer buy for me if the blade was just a bit longer. Maybe daniel craig will use it in the next bond movie. That would make it a sell out for sure
I can see myself getting one in the future, it is nice that you can use it as a neck knife which I personally like, or like you said keep it in a boot. I'm a fan.
@sbyman96 But think about this: there is a lot of steel in this blade, S30V would jack the price. And for a stabing tool, do you really need nore than 440C? Just some thoughts.
Its affordable, intelligently designed, bare bones, and feels great in the hand. That being said... Really if you aren't mounting this to MOLLE then you won't have many easy carry options. The clip does not lock down hard enough to grab on to something as thin as a pants pocket. I even tried to tighten it up manually and still cannot get it to grip. Wearing it on the belt line (IWB) it is very uncomfortable because of the grip ridges on top which can rub against your back or stomach.
@sbyman96 Why? It's not a utility tool, it's just for stabbing. You'd pay twice as much for S30V without any gain in performance. 440C is more than adequate for this purpose.
Plenty of people I know In the military spend the extra money to get the best cause their life depends on it but that does not mean this knife is not good and I totally agree
spartan blades does pretty much the exact same blade in 154cm...but the steel and the semi-custom build is reflected in the price. If one had a high chance of using the knife, id go for the 154cm, but 440c is perfectly good enough if you don't plan on having to stab a bunch of people with it without access to a sharpener.
@ChrisRiley93 the 440c may hold a similar edge characteristic as 154cm, but its yield strength is slightly less. in my opinion, 154 is better all around. although the 440c that benchmade has is very strong compared to other companies.
I agree 154cm is a better blade steel. Yes the spartan knives cqb tool is made of 154cm. I don't think the military when giving the specs to Benchmade had a "high speed" steel as the leading trait of the blade. It's a mass produced item issued to special ops troops. It doesn't have to be super blade it has to be metal and stick in things, the blade may even be left in the unlucky sod you use it on. My point is 440c is adequate for this use. As a civvie you can go spend $160 if you wish.
@sbyman96 440C is probably good enough for this knife, all it needs to do is stab and itll keep the price down...correct me if im wrong but i think Spartan Blades does an identical knife but in S30V
You can't compare this to a griptilian. It's for a completely different purpose. The tip is sharp enough to penetrate through clothing and skin, which is sharp enough for its intended use.
The reason its only sharpened on the tips is because its not a knife that needs to be sharpened it is a throwing knife as most of you should have noticed and if the whole blade was sharpened it would be more likely you would cut your hand on release.
Ok so it is my understanding that this blade was moddeled off of the Spartain CQB tool that the SF comunity designed with Spartain blades. Who can give me the background on this? Did Benchmade buy, borrow, take this design from Spartain? What's the back story? Thank you.
I'd be curious to hear from serious trained knife fighters, or even the designer himself, what the purpose is for only sharpening the very tip. It seems a very purpose driven design decision, I'd love to hear exactly why.
Wearing ir around neck under shirt is a concealed weapon violation in most states. Short blade folding pocket knives are usually ok. Check your state law before carrying concealed.
yeah, really this was meant, as the name SOCP suggests, as a knife to fit in with hand to hand combat, and if you've ever stabbed something, it doesn't need to be that sharp to go in and cause damage. its supposed to be easy to carry, easy to access, easy to hang on to, and dangerous as a stabbing weapon. it does everything it's meant to do perfectly. it's not an EDC blade or a primary offensive weapon by any means.
not much difference, spartan blades used to have the contract for these knives and then expired, greg went with benchmade and the sheath change a little, the benchmade exposes less of the knife so that is harder for someone else to grab the dagger but it is easier for the person carrying it./
@Breakneckhydra1 440C is more than enough. You're not gonna defend yourself few times a day so there isn't any need for a better steel that keeps the edge longer. For that money you don't need a better steel, you need a cheaper knife.
93 dollars on Amazon for the 176 model and 102 dollars for the 178 model way cheaper then on benchmades website where they sell the 178 for 120 dollars and the 176 for 110 dollars!!
got mine yesterday, i was disappointed that Benchmade didn't sharpen it and is more dull than my cheaper low quality knives. But this knife is okay. nothing too special. My Griptillian can outdo almost everything this knife can do. so i say this knife is more of a last ditch or cool collectible knife. Thats all.
Very versatile both in terms of use and in terms of carry. And I sharpened the edges too to stretch it's versatility even more. I even contemplate serrations for the blade to eat through anything.

Every once in a while I fall in love with a blade. Right now this blade is apple of my eyes.

Neck knife? I've heard most people saying it falls out when its upside down if you shake it a bit.. since it wasn't made for that.?
Great for reverse or ice pick grip applications ! But due to straight design not so good for forward grip strikes ! Unless they can create a recurve in the handle design that will facilitate both grips for future upgrades. Thanks :)

I forgot to check this knife out when I came to your shop the other day. Oh well, next time maybe. Thanks again for the 51 Morpho and tool kit!!
This is one of my daily carry knives... It holds upside down without any issue... all around its a great knife....
Very cool to look at and I get the idea behind it especially the semi sharpened tip. Itd be a no brainer buy for me if the blade was just a bit longer. Maybe daniel craig will use it in the next bond movie. That would make it a sell out for sure

@sbyman96 If you ever end up using it, edge retention isn't realy at the top of your priority list.
@mtlwarrior1 correction, looked it up, its 154CM on the Spartan Blades website available in Black or Tan
@Breakneckhydra1 440C isn't bad when properly heat treated.
every nice design, but because of the double sided blade, it would make it illegal to carry?
@sbyman96 But think about this: there is a lot of steel in this blade, S30V would jack the price. And for a stabing tool, do you really need nore than 440C? Just some thoughts.

Could this fit in the inside of a boot? Seems like it would conceal well there.
I carry this mounted horizontally on my belt. easy to reach and it is practically hidden. I do not wear loose shirts either.
spartan blades does pretty much the exact same blade in 154cm...but the steel and the semi-custom build is reflected in the price. How well does that sheath retain the blades when upside down?
I agree 154cm is a better blade steel. Yes the spartan knives cqb tool is made of 154cm. does the sheath have enough retention to run it upside down?
@sbyman96 440C is probably good enough for this knife, all it needs to do is stab and itll keep the price down...correct me if im wrong but i think Spartan Blades does an identical knife but in S30V
On your website it only shows one kind of sheath
i want one! and do you think it could be used as a throwing knife?
@sbyman96 I disagree the steel is just fine for its purpose, why such an expensive steel for a blade that has limited/specific use?
Wow, this knife looks really cool! Awesome knife!
Someone did a great job with this
You can't compare this to a griptilian. It's for a completely different purpose. The tip is sharp enough to penetrate through clothing and skin, which is sharp enough for its intended use.
Very neat knife. Looks a lot like a kunai styled knife
@nls8520 im with you 75 is kind of high...maybe in s30v
can it be used as a throwing knife?
is the pocket clip tight enough to keep the sheath in your pocket or belt when you draw it?
The reason its only sharpened on the tips is because its not a knife that needs to be sharpened it is a throwing knife as most of you should have noticed and if the whole blade was sharpened it would be more likely you would cut your hand on release.
the tan version is sick! pretty cool.
And bevel grind too; that's refreshing to see. Chisel grind bums me out so. Cool blade! Overpriced, but cool.
Not 100% sure about the california laws on blades, anyone know if this is legal to carry on you in cali?
can this be used as throwing knife?
it is a great knife, no doubt, but you should definitely try out the CQB Tool from Spartan Blades
can you tell me when is going to be aveilable on your page?
Sadly, I'm pretty sure double-edged knives are illegal to carry around here in Texas.
440c is a great steel, why would you want a premium steel on a fighting/self-defence knife?
Ok so it is my understanding that this blade was moddeled off of the Spartain CQB tool that the SF comunity designed with Spartain blades. Who can give me the background on this? Did Benchmade buy, borrow, take this design from Spartain? What's the back story? Thank you.
TJack The knife was designed by Greg Thompson. He licensed his design to Spartan then licensed it to Benchmade
Ok gotcha. Thanks
BladeOps
I went to check it out ! It is out of stock, when do you expect it back in? DKD
Where can I purchase one of these please comment back thank you very much
Amazon
If you dont want the tan/OD version, feel free to send it my way!
how much does it cost?
And Chilean Corvo?
$90 DOLLARS for 440c Steel! No Way, Way overpriced!
@gerberboy0100 I'd say so look at the effort to pull it out
seriously i know, sometimes i do hate living here, but the luxury is worth it.
I'd be curious to hear from serious trained knife fighters, or even the designer himself, what the purpose is for only sharpening the very tip. It seems a very purpose driven design decision, I'd love to hear exactly why.

yes it does
I'm sold, I love fixed blades
Does it throw well? Are you able to throw it well?
GingaNinja729 its too light.
hole is to small..gloves? also is almost impossible to to withdraw without drawing whole case/holster, essentially making dagger useless.
the belt clip is good and wont get pulled up the marines uses benchmade utility tools

@Breakneckhydra1 I agree german 440c is great with a good heattreat.
chinese 440c is bad.
а где его можно заказать
I subscribed because of this knife.
i agree! u t knife is kindof cool
i like it. looks nice very slim. too bad its illegal to carry here :(
Yes.
Very cool
im about to get one
cool knife!
That's a nasty looking piece of kit.
Buying one
I don't like that the blade is half sharpened
Sick ass knife
Nice channel
+Felipe Andres Carvallo Rodriguez thank you
thanks for the info!
@istephan007 if u wanna waste 75 bucks sure
i bought one almost 2 months ago :D but not from bladeops :(
I don't see a use for it where another blade would not fulfil the job better.
...but still, the price point of this blade should reflect a higher quality steel. Regardless of its application, 440c is an inferior blade steel.
got mine yesterday, i was disappointed that Benchmade didn't sharpen it and is more dull than my cheaper low quality knives. But this knife is okay. nothing too special. My Griptillian can outdo almost everything this knife can do. so i say this knife is more of a last ditch or cool collectible knife. Thats all.
COOL!
Like ninja kunai
I want 1 !!!
he meant the coyote tan sheath
You can open carry but not concealed.
I actually like it, not sure I would pay 75.00 for it to be completely honest. 50.00 bucks seems more like what I would pay for it.
Modern tactical kunai.
I mean come on, it's not even Mil Spec.
Perfect
Why can it be cheeper
dude almost nuthin is leagel to caryin comyfornia
that would be illegal where I am from
awesome
