I believe the mr2 doesn't need a comeback,but instead a proper burial. I don't doubt that toyota would make a good car if they decide to remake the mr2,but I have my doubts that it would do it's legacy justice. I don't want to see the MR2 namesake ruined like what has happened with other cars.

Bought a JDM SW20 Turbo earlier this year. Absolutely love the car and the niche community that comes with it. Highly recommend for anybody thinking about one.

I bought an 91 sw20 mr2 turbo just before the pandemic and it has doubled in value in just 2 years. To boot I could not be less interested in selling it. The kind of car that you just sit in the drive way and stare at. I pinch myself every time I take it out on a back road. It has the cargo space for me to carry a car cover and go for groceries no problems. Surprisingly it's also very spacious on the inside. I'm 6'1 and about 220lbs and I have plenty of leg room. Really incredible cars and still a bargain for the driving experience. I've personally found the snap oversteer criticism largely over exaggerated. If you understand how to drive a Porsche they handle very similarly to the second gen mr2s. Don't lift of the throttle mid corner, left foot brake if you experience understeer, keep the revs between 3-5.5k rmps for best response. Best purchase decision I've ever made.
When I turned sixteen, the only car I wanted was an MR-2. I was broke and couldn’t afford one. Ended up with a ‘76 Nova, but that doesn’t change the fact that I have still wanted one of these to this day.

Doesn’t seem right. I own a sw20, it’s NA, and on the factory plate it says sw20. The sw20 refers to the frame, according to the factory plate. S for S series engine. W20 refers to 2gen. Sw21 only refers to 5sfe which I believe was only available in USDM

I have my 94 gen3 turbo now for 15 years and i still love to drive it at the Werkend. With 300hp it's amazing to drive. Also if Toyota would produce a new Mr2, i still drive the Sw20😉 Many greats from germany
3S-GTE is turbocharged, not supercharged. And the third generation MR2 already came with the same motor as the Celica GT (1zz). What you want is the motor from the Celica GTS (2ZZ)
Favorite gen is by far the third gen spyder, it’s the best platform to build on. Yes it’s ugly stock but would a jdm sports car be what it is without loads of modifications to make it personally your own? The sky is the limit with these cars, the fact that they are pretty much 1000 lbs lighter than most other sports cars on the road and are mid engine gives them very fun and fast characteristics. Mine has fender flares 17x9 wheels and celica spec d headlights, celica seats and is lowered over 4 inches. All that’s left is to engine swap and make as much power as I can afford and nothing out there will be able to match its performance. I love the second gen for what it did for the jdm community but my heart will always be with my spyder.
5:19 sorry to be stickler but the second gen mr2 never had a supercharger option. I think you are referring to the turbo model with 200hp ish. Some actually had much more and TRD notoriously modify and sell dealers versions with upwards of 500hp.

8:53 that is the reason why the spyder is perfect. More Power means more weight more costs, more taxes, worse gasmilage, less are going to be produced, less will get soled because of the price. Sportscars are Not GT's. Many GT's have Sport DNA but the Spyder is a perfect car. Because a Tuner can add what is missing, losing the thing that you don't need ist more difficult.

I'm still rocking the Mk1 MR2... my second one, this time an '87 t-bar (first was an '88 sunroof). I love it to bits, it makes a great noise and is bursting with character. I don't care that it can get thrashed by a mildly-hot modern hatchback or even SUVs, lol, my car makes me happy and that's all that counts.
The work on it is really not bad especially considering it’s a Toyota that rarely needs anything. It just takes getting used to everything being in a different place
its all standard toyota stuff but the problem is how cramped everything is and how certain parts (looking at you, fuel pump) go together. you have to take apart a lot to fix a little.

I have a 2zz swapped MRS 3rd gen. 13 second car all day all motor. High 12 second car when I get it tuned one day. Lightest of all the generations. Best engineered. Best handling. Easiest to buy complete and not clapped out. Top can go down. The best MR2. Like…I t’s always the fat chicks (AW11/SW20) that throw the most hate. 😅
The beauty of cars is that people like what they like. Although the majority of people seem to like the Mk2 best for styling. It's not the best handling (no power steering & heavier than it looks) but people love it. The mk3 is looked at like a mazda mx5 in the UK. Not so loved like the Mk2 or rx7.
Yes, I like the zzw30 best. It's the lightest and you can still do whatever power levels you want from whatever engine you want to swap in. Not as good looking I admit, but they make body kits. I also enjoy open air driving.
My daily driver is a slightly modified '91 Turbo. It does not suffer from snap oversteer; it suffers from inexperienced drivers who panic and hit the brakes when the tail kicks out.
What happened? Toyota abandoned its performance division in the late '90s and went total consumer eco car. Now they need BMW? to make a solid platform. The world intelligence level has truly gone the way of the Dodo.
the 3rd gen is a truely underrated car. it handles the best out of the 3 they are an absolute blast to drive. personally mine has the engine about to die so im going to be swapping it with the 2zz engine bc it will make it far more fun.
I like the 3rd gen mr2. It's the best looking best handling and all around best balanced sports car of the three generations. And if you want one you have a way better chance of finding one and doesn't rusted in half then if you're looking for a first or second gen.
There is NOTHING wrong with the 2.2 5sfe MK2 MR2. Ignorant people think "Oh, only the 200 hp 3STGE turbo MR2 can be fun." Well as my name states I have a NA mk2, and I love it. It has plenty of power for me, it will never be swapped ever. It gets up and goes just fine. I feel like people bastardizing cars for more speed and power is absolutely idiotic. Especially cars that can be fun with low hp, like a mk2 MR2, and NA mk1 Miata both 130 hp when new. As someone quite wisely said once, instead of modifying the car to be "fun", modify your self to have fun with the car. Ok rant over.
My brother and I own first gens they are truly one of few cars that feel like they are talking with you when you drive them hard. Thats with old worn shocks and a missing sway bar. Love these cars, I want to own every gen. If you can find them buy the Aw11. Alot of them are barn finds or neglected and normally cheap compared to the sw20.
My grandpa had a 3rd Gen mr2 5 speed and it was a fun little car. I was 7 so wasn't able to drive it but now my grandpa has a fiat Abarth 500 5 speed and got a lil turbo and that's what I learned to drive stick in.
If the fourth GEN4 MR2 looks likes the car at 09:04, has the Camry motor supercharged/ turbo charged by Lotus, and is below the price of a New Supra. Then you got yourself a game changer.

I'd say your fairly safe boosting a 4age to around the 190-200hp range but thats going to require spot on tuning the slightist case of detonation is going to shatter your ringlands so don't skimp get good injectorscompression ratio around 10:8:1. Held up just fine. many others on this site have had good results with turbo 4age
I've wanted one since I could drive. I got my licence around the time the 3rd gen Spyder came out. It took me about 15 years, but I finally got my own 2000 MR-2 Spyder and I imidiatly fell in love. I've had it for 5 years now and I've been driving it daily since I bought it. I love my Spyder! To this day I have been the only driver since I got her. I am only the 3rd owner. Super reliable. I also found a 1st gen AW11 about 2 years after buying my Spyder. It was previously run as an autocross car. They are amazing cars! I love both my cars and plan to hopefully later find an SW20 to complete my collection. I will never sell my cars. My Spyder is my baby. I would love to see Toyota bring these amazing cars back.

It took a while to get them but man I love every single one. All low miles but I don’t care, I drive them as that’s what they were meant to be, not sitting collecting dust. It’s a 1993 NA Super Red if you click on my channel it’s on my banner, picture is a few years old but it now has a GReddy kit and it’s dipped in wicked wine color. But it’s still na and it’s just a blast to drive even though I have the turbo ones, nothing beats driving the first MR2 that got me hooked into wanting to get more of these cars.
Well you asked my favorite generation. It’s specific but it would be mr2 2nd gen just after 1995 they fixed some of the problems with the manual steering and gave it a little more automation with steering assist and the great suspension helped too
This car doesn’t get half the hype as most of the overhyped fan boy cars that came out of Japan in the 90s. The Kouki SW20 was actually faster than the A80 Supra.
I had a 2nd gen MR2 Turbo in Spectra Blue Metallic and it was one of the most fun and by far most uncomfortable cars I had ever sat in. My lower back would be killing after about 20 minutes of driving it lol
Had 2 SW20s and an AW11. Managed to get them cheap back in the day, now they're shooting up in value and getting hard to find. Oh, and as far as AW vs SW goes, they're both great cars.

My wife has a '91, MR-2 turbo, all black, loaded, about 75k. Commute sled. Religiously pampered on maintenance. Parking structure/car cover. Original paint. Where do I get name brand tires. 190/60r14 and 205/60r14. Off brand names, are they good.
Toyota is becoming the new Mitsubishi, sure it has the new supra, but come on, it having to pair up with another company to supply it with the powertrain after having such pedigree with the 2jz? Sw20 is the nickname for all of the gen 2 cars. The NA was SW21 but is part of the SW20 series

its all standard toyota stuff but the problem is how cramped everything is and how certain parts (looking at you, fuel pump) go together. you have to take apart a lot to fix a little.
@@cjaysabino I actually daily a 2000s civic and am more comfortable working on the MR2 due to it being more simplistic in design. I avoid touching anything on my civic since it’s my daily tbh. But yeah I guess it’s similar overall

I have a 2zz swapped MRS 3rd gen. 13 second car all day all motor. High 12 second car when I get it tuned one day. Lightest of all the generations. Best engineered. Best handling. Easiest to buy complete and not clapped out. Top can go down. The best MR2. Like…I t’s always the fat chicks (AW11/SW20) that throw the most hate. 😅
The beauty of cars is that people like what they like. Although the majority of people seem to like the Mk2 best for styling. It's not the best handling (no power steering & heavier than it looks) but people love it. The mk3 is looked at like a mazda mx5 in the UK. Not so loved like the Mk2 or rx7.
Yes, I like the zzw30 best. It's the lightest and you can still do whatever power levels you want from whatever engine you want to swap in. Not as good looking I admit, but they make body kits. I also enjoy open air driving.

I like the 3rd gen mr2. It's the best looking best handling and all around best balanced sports car of the three generations. And if you want one you have a way better chance of finding one and doesn't rusted in half then if you're looking for a first or second gen.
Mine was a 91 MR2 second gen and I loved that car, 5sfe but hey it was fun, I loved it and tell everyone about it how great it served me
There is NOTHING wrong with the 2.2 5sfe MK2 MR2. Ignorant people think "Oh, only the 200 hp 3STGE turbo MR2 can be fun." Well as my name states I have a NA mk2, and I love it. It has plenty of power for me, it will never be swapped ever. It gets up and goes just fine. I feel like people bastardizing cars for more speed and power is absolutely idiotic. Especially cars that can be fun with low hp, like a mk2 MR2, and NA mk1 Miata both 130 hp when new. As someone quite wisely said once, instead of modifying the car to be "fun", modify your self to have fun with the car. Ok rant over.

My brother and I own first gens they are truly one of few cars that feel like they are talking with you when you drive them hard. Thats with old worn shocks and a missing sway bar. Love these cars, I want to own every gen. If you can find them buy the Aw11. Alot of them are barn finds or neglected and normally cheap compared to the sw20.

My grandpa had a 3rd Gen mr2 5 speed and it was a fun little car. I was 7 so wasn't able to drive it but now my grandpa has a fiat Abarth 500 5 speed and got a lil turbo and that's what I learned to drive stick in.

I'd say your fairly safe boosting a 4age to around the 190-200hp range but thats going to require spot on tuning the slightist case of detonation is going to shatter your ringlands so don't skimp get good injectorscompression ratio around 10:8:1. Held up just fine. many others on this site have had good results with turbo 4age

I've wanted one since I could drive. I got my licence around the time the 3rd gen Spyder came out. It took me about 15 years, but I finally got my own 2000 MR-2 Spyder and I imidiatly fell in love. I've had it for 5 years now and I've been driving it daily since I bought it. I love my Spyder! To this day I have been the only driver since I got her. I am only the 3rd owner. Super reliable. I also found a 1st gen AW11 about 2 years after buying my Spyder. It was previously run as an autocross car. They are amazing cars! I love both my cars and plan to hopefully later find an SW20 to complete my collection. I will never sell my cars. My Spyder is my baby. I would love to see Toyota bring these amazing cars back.

It took a while to get them but man I love every single one. All low miles but I don’t care, I drive them as that’s what they were meant to be, not sitting collecting dust. Hope to import a TRD 2000 GT, a SW20 Spider, and and a 1999 Purple SW20.
@@supers0nic77 Yes get a SW20 and AW11 if you can there amazing!! My first and second car ever was a MR2 was second gen na. Not the fastest but its amazing. I still own it. It’s a 1993 NA Super Red if you click on my channel it’s on my banner, picture is a few years old but it now has a GReddy kit and it’s dipped in wicked wine color. But it’s still na and it’s just a blast to drive even though I have the turbo ones, nothing beats driving the first MR2 that got me hooked into wanting to get more of these cars.

Well you asked my favorite generation. It’s specific but it would be mr2 2nd gen just after 1995 they fixed some of the problems with the manual steering and gave it a little more automation with steering assist and the great suspension helped too

Toyota is becoming the new Mitsubishi, sure it has the new supra, but come on, it having to pair up with another company to supply it with the powertrain after having such pedigree with the 2jz? That's sad. Even with the gt86, just sad. look at Nissan how they still do things on their own, developing or improving their engines, shit even Mazda becoming mediocre aside the mx5 platform is rumored to be making a new i6, possibly reviving the Rx platform or even the Mazda6 platform. Toyota is just lazy. I sound like a Nissan Stan, but just look at the controversy with that CEO, company having to downsize, not making money and still coming out with new homebuilt vehicles.
