I've talked with Adam a few times about his sound. He has that list on his site about the all time greats, and one of his criteria is you have to be able to hear a few bars of them and know who is. Adam fits into that category, I think, although I still struggle to really articulate what it is that makes 'his' sound. I think that chord thrown in there is part of it. His playing has a particular crankiness... a lot of double stop-ish stuff. There is a whole subgenre of videos these days where musicians play one band's song in the style of another band. It would be interesting to see a panel discussion with some of the current players doing that, and discussing the different elements of different players style.
I just watched a video and use that tool. It was very helpful on TH-cam. Your video on how to find and play the licks of a song is so incredibly helpful. Thank you Tomlin for taking the time. Your School is the best.
❤ Thanks! Great reports from your recent Edinburgh seminar. It constantly amazes me that the international "harp community" can be so familiar/cohesive/friendly! Thanks EVERYONE!😊
Thanks for the video Tomlin. I would do the timing as 1 ah 2 ah 3 e + 1 ah 2 ah 3. This might be too difficult for beginners and that is why i believe you said all eighth notes.
You have an amazing technique in dissecting Adam's lick and replaying it back to us neophytes ... Although Adam is using a microphone 🎤🎙️ which distorts the lick. It's like NCIS: Forensic Harmonica! Coming to a channel near you! Thanks, Slick! Harp On!
Well, as interesting as this video can be, it would only be fully completed after "teaching" or showing us the missing parts: what are the subtilities in Adam's playing that lick that make it sounds like this... He may use a lot of tongue slap, tongue block or double notes. I don't know because the mic and reverb/delay of the amp changes the result, but even acoustic it would show us some effects, advanced techniques. I watched the whole video waiting for a lesson on how to analyse and find those subtilities (that make all the difference in the end)
100%. I interpret this lick as tongue blocked splits for the majority of it...thats absolutely what Adam is doing. I got most of the lick down before he got through his first explanation...Thanks for isolating a cool lick, I guess...
Thanks Tomlin! I follow Adam's channel as well as yours, and it's amazing, the quality of your teachings. In this Gussow lick, I thought I heard an octave tongue-block lick in the 2nd half of the lick. Am I completely wrong? is he using an octave pedal? And, btw, if he's doing the octave trick, thanks for having simplified the lick for us!
What microphone do you use for these videos and would you recommend it for home recording? I'm looking for something not too expensive but that gives good quality. Currently what I use is too cheap and tends to not give me a good range of frequencies. My acoustic recordings lack middle and base.
newbie question! what's the reason of using headsets when you practice with a soundtrack? isn't it more difficult to ear yourself playing the harp then? thanks and great work by the way.
Hi Tomlin. Transcribing by ear looks fun, but do you ever simply use one of the readily available pitch monitor apps to speed up the process of finding the notes a player is using?
I played it last night I was terrible, tonight felt easier. Sleep helps us remember But in general it would take me for 2 weeks to maybe a month practicing about 10 mins daily, to be prepared to play live Depends on how quickly people learn. Like Tomlin did it in a short period maybe took him 30 minutes all up. Me usually takes a month to be good. I’m 50 though So maybe if I was 20 I could possibly have it smooth enough to play live within a week. Actually if you play it quite slowly you’ll imprint it better. Then from time to time speed it up then back to slow. Another tip is to often stop and listen to the riff several times. Locking the notes your head. Along with the rhythm. As that’s more important than anything. Because learning the wrong rhythm it’s hard to undo in our heads. That’s why listing without playing is so important too! Another tip is with no harmonica imagine where the notes are. Do that a bit later in the process though. The point is to know ‘where’ the notes are, then imagine or play them whenever possible Have fun.
At day 3 and I can play it the same speed. But am making mistakes as not fit muscle memory and note memory developed yet. I practice in the morning for about 10 times through the lick, then again 10 times at night. So it’s actually way less than 10 minutes a day and my brain is remembering. I also suffer from the disease ME/CFS which we have ‘brain fog’ so it’s difficult to remember things. But I am remembering how to do it!! I reckon if you did it 4 or 5 times a day and about 10 times per practise, you’d have this sussed in a week. Spending too much time on it in one go I believe causes people to learn slower. Because a huge part of memory is in between time of not doing it. That gives time for the brain’s neurons to lay down new pathways. And practising often in small amounts also triggers that memory.
To play it like Tomlin is showing? A week. To play it with tongue blocking textures like Gussow is doing, much longer. There’s a reason why most notable blues players use tongue blocking. There are a few exceptions, but not many.
I am a woman learning the harmonica and why isn't there alot of women?? I am 44 and a security nught gaurd and I am picking it up good whos a good teacher where I can do online classes???
@@TomlinHarmonica The notes Gussow plays (additionally) sound an octave below the notes you are playing. I suspect he's using tongue blocking to play them in octaves. This is in line with another comment above, pointing out the advanced techniques that are ignored in this video. It's fine to not address advanced techniques in a video aimed at beginners; just say "he's doing some other stuff that's beyond the scope of this video" and move on. But there's no reason to get salty and act like they're not audible in the original. We're not deaf, nor stupid.
Hiya, I hope I’m not being misunderstood. I do have bad hearing - I taught what I heard. I think it would be great for everyone watching if anyone can chime in and explain the notes I’m missing - this is helpful for everyone. No sarcasm or saltiness.

Holy cats!!! Someone just mentioned you did this! Swear to GOD my latest vid was a total Gussow Coincidence!
lol - I now need to do a video about you doing a video ;-)
Must be Gussow appreciation month. :)
I thought you'd both done it on purpose! I have 2 windows open with you both on so I can learn these 🙂
Thanks, Tomlin has always really appreciate all your videos
Thanks for this one. So very inspirational. Perfect example as to why you are one of the greatest instructors on TH-cam.
Loved this.
Wow, thank you!
A hug from Brazil, for you... Watch your videos and I learn a lot from you
Nice work Tomlin 😊thanks for sharing.

Thanks Tomlin, this is a really nice riff and you show us one surprising way to use it. 😊
Enjoyed learning how you went about teaching yourself the lick, great information for the rest of us. Now to play it another 9,980 times :)
Awesome Tomlin! So fun and helpful! Thank you!
Thank you for this great video. Very interesting.

Cool to see my painting on Adam’s wall
Thanks for your lessons!
That's awesome!!
Big Thank you for you👍
Thanks Tomlin helpful as always
Awesome breakdown of that lick! And a great lesson! Thanks Tomlin, 09999 more times to go so it sinks in 🙏😳😅

Really like that kind of video
Sounds cool! Now invite him to one of your videos, so he can comfirm!
And then we get a lesson with both of ya together. Muahaha perfect plan. 😈😂😂
thanks so much...😋
can you do a video or short explaining the difference in sound between playing a C harmonica in 2nd position and a G harmonica in 1st position?
Merci !!
I love the comb covers. Where did you get them?
Thanks

Very instructive analyze and lesson 👍- what clip of Adam is it - How can I find it ? / Kenne
Adam’s a nice guy. I’m sure he’d have emailed you the tab if you’d asked 😉
Adam's a great guy but there is so much more value in working things out by ear than using tabs.
Gussow is awesome. I’ve seen about all his videos and I’ve only been learning hair for a month 😂
Great lick. Very useful thanks
What mic are you using here, at the end harmonica solo?
❤❤❤❤❤

That’s a great idea BUT I think there is a lot to be said for doing it yourself - your ear will get much better
tomlin what program are you using that allows you to slow the music down so you can listen more carefully
It’s TH-cam - you can slow down any videos
Nice
Adam Gussow is a genius
Is that a custom harp by blue moon harmonicas you have there?
Thanks! It's a standard marine band deluxe with a Todd Parrott comb in it.
(♯) (♭) how can I make (C) harmonica
Hello! Are you wondering how to make "C" harmonica sharp or flat???
Damn, ya spend the night in county??
You forgot what makes the lick good in the octave splits. Cmon my guy.
Told you you would look great bald! Now just shave it all with razor and it will look even better. Congrats and welcome to the club ;)
P.S.: this video format is amazing
Put a Lid on it...
I was thinking the same thing
So you said 10000 times I think a little ’tongue in cheek’ there but honestly how many repetitions do most people do to make this ‘feel natural’??
I played it last night I was terrible, tonight felt easier. Sleep helps us remember

Haha ten thousand times
A rhetorical question... I have been a student of yours for about six months now, how long do you think it will take me to do that?
Hiya - I'm afraid I can't give an answer to that. Check out this video which might help answer a little - th-cam.com/video/LdtWRuJNUKA/w-d-xo.html
Gussow vamps all the notes going down. He vamps automatically like he used to do while busking.
You look younger bald. Way better honestly, great choice

There aren't enough women playing harmonica but the number is growing all the time. I have a ton of female students :-)
4 n 5 notes wrong
Oh no - what are they?
