Yes, some people think "when the grocery store fails, I'm just going to grow a garden!" To that I say "good luck with that!"
It takes 4-5 years to build a garden that will produce enough food to feed a family. One needs a productive garden already in place BEFORE s/he can't buy at the grocery store.

We've had loss after birth for our dairy goats too, and I love what you had to say. My husband and I had multiple conversations the first few years, after tough kiddings and complications, " Do we still want to do this, or do we want to get out now?", but every time we chose to stick it out and we're thankful we did. We have years of experience to draw from now and it does grow your resiliency to endure.

I’m living in the Netherlands, and we had the same thing last year. Normally our growing seasons are short with average summer temps of 22 Celsius. All our tomatoes had blight, before they had ripe fruits. Squashes did not like the cold either, as did all the warm loving things. The year before, we had so many voles, that we were left with hardly anything. We are not homesteaders, but growing veg and fruit on a plot. This year started better, thank God! Especially with all the craziness going on! Blessings send your way! Stay positive!

My mom and my grandma (grandma was born in 1894) always had 3 years put up. (She had 12 kids. That would be my grandmother) Plus enough for 6 extra people. My mother only had three kids. She did the same. There was a book they had about how much to put up of everything per person. After my mom died and we put a lot of stuff in the storage I have not been able to find that book I'm very upset in it also had some canning recipes and meat curing recipes that I sorely Miss. The reason for the six extra people was for holidays and guest since you didn't have guests and holidays everyday and it really helped out during the big holidays. Besides visitors and holidays, potlucks. could make or give food to people who are in morn or were sick.

This is my first year gardening on our new property, and let me tell you....there's super disappointment when you have nothing to work with but clay. But not abundance, so I am going to my local farmers market and purchasing food to preserve there.

We live on clay too! Last year we amended the soil in our small garden but it was still very hard so this year I planned for adding raised garden beds and bought soil for them. This video was very encouraging for me because while our tomatoes seem to be doing the best of anything, the mice and squirrels have wreaked absolute havoc on my garden in the last week! I have 4 sweet corn plants left after planting over 50, my peas had pods filling out when the mice snipped them all off at ground level so they died, my carrots that were just getting to be 2-3" long finally were decimated by the mice (tops chewed off and pulled out and even nibbled on the carrots themselves so I can't even use what's left), and I only have 1 out of 7 brussel sprouts plants with any leaves left on it. I'll be doing some kind of purchasing vegetables to preserve as much as I can!

I do not believe that in any way shape or form that using starts and transplants is not really gardening. You are still putting in the time effort energy and work into building your garden. Just because you didn't fill a cup with dirt plant the seed water it and grow it before moving it into your garden does not negate your work. It's like when people used to say to me you're not really a truck driver if you drive an automatic truck, real truckers shift gears. Well, that will be your little secret I tell them LOL. I would always say well I load my truck I take my product to the next place and they get it so I don't think anybody really cares how the transmission shifted its gears. As long as you get the result of growing your food and learning how to be self-sufficient eventually you will be able to create a space to start your own seedlings IF that is what you want to do. Don't let the naysayers pick you apart. You're going to do great!

Sounds like we are having the same weather trends as you over the last 2 years. 😵‍💫. Last summer our river was nonexistent, it was literally a gravel road! We drove our wheeler on it! This year we are having the worst flooding in recorded history! Last year taught me to diversify my gardening. I have beautiful raised beds that I LOVE! But the intensity of the drought made it impossible to keep my beds watered enough even with constant watering. So, I built a second garden area. In ground beds. We have clay soil here and in wet years that clay soil cause root root but last year taught me that I needed to plant 2 gardens. One for drought tolerance and one for wet seasons. I plant the same crops, in the same quality that I always have but hopefully I will have more protection from the extremes. My raised beds are booming this year!!!! My new in ground beds, a large amount of my seeds rotted and what did survive is slowly drowning. I don’t regret my decision though because last year if I had had my second garden, I would have been far more successful. God bless! Thanks for encouraging others to keep trying! I hope this long winded post is an encouragement to others as well, who are feeling frustrated and defeated. Try, try again!!! Do what works for you!!! Not what someone else tells you that you have to do 😉❤️

We are struggling with keeping everything watered, aphids attacking my tomatoes, my raspberry plants are barely growing, my cucumbers and melons look wonderful but are not fruiting. We're in a full blown drought here in East Texas. We are going to have triple digit days all this week with little to no rain for last few months. Some pastures are growing brown and crunchy. Yet, God has blessed our farmstead. We are moving forward little by little as we trust Him in the difficulties. These are good teaching moments for us as we see how super mulching our orchard has helped keep our trees alive. We see our happy sheep thriving in our high intensity short duration micro rotational grazing practices. We're exploring ways to help our land help itself through wise management and realizing stuff like "why didn't we run any water lines over here when we were laying down infrastructure?" Our heavenly father is teaching us perseverance, patience and endurance. It would be nice if He would send some of the cold and rain our way, but really, we wouldn't be learning and receiving what we have. Whether too wet or too dry, too hot or too cold, keep your eyes fixed on Him and He'll see you through. God is always good!

Thank you for this Carolyn!! I am a true believer in this and practice it all the time - one never knows, hail, early snow, drought, too much rain, animals get into the garden...the list is endless. By planting and canning so that you are putting up extra, you can adapt to those bad years. You have the option to "ration" something if needed. But one thing I have always found even with the "issues", the garden always gives something. It may not be what you planned, but it gives something.

Yup...even in central France we're having the same issue with the weather...lots of rain, cold then a heatwave for two days, more rain, more rain and some hailstorms. Surrender and the power of prayer are essential for the soul along with starting to adapt the way we eat so when there's not so much we don't suffer so much. Knowing where the good fats and proteins come from naturally is a great start because there are always 'weeds' that proliferate seasonally even when the veggies don't do well so we can harvest and store those too. Love visiting your channel xxx

I was just thinking about this, Carolyn, as I am in the panhandle as well. Last year so much of my yield either baked, bolted, or just died. This year I planted earlier and everything came up beautifully!!!…and then the rain and no sun. Now as you said my cold loving plants are doing well, I’m just getting sun this past week, a lot withered from too much moisture and too little sun. And a lot of my spinach has bolted (it’s so sensitive). I thank God for what He allows me to go through and what He gives me in my garden. As you say, every year is different and you have to know how to handle these hiccups along the way. Excellent topic.

Now it has turned off so hot and so dry we have not had any rain in 2 months at our house and none appears to be in sight. My harvest have been extremely small the sun is just baking everything regardless of how much we water. Then last week and armadillo got into the garden and uprooted every one of my potatoes. My garlic did not produce well and my corn is barely hanging on. However, I plan to do a fall planting and just continue doing some payday preps every week. We have a family farm about 20 minutes away where we raise cattle, and we too lost a first year cow/calf pair at birth, a large financial loss. Aso this year, our garden didn't get planted until mid May. We live in an Earthberm home and had such copious amounts of rain that our home flooded, and is now under major reconstruction, down to cement floors and walls. Because of that we have been behind on everything 😛We went from cold and monsoon-ish weather to 90*+ days and NO rain. We are JUST starting to get blooms on the garden. We don’t have a big “homestead” but expanded our yard gardens this year and some thing’s aren’t going well here either. Some is some inexperience with some things and some… extremely hot weather, not enough rain, termites in beds of all things and no idea how to safely mitigate THAT without poisoning the plants and by extension US, an explosion of rabbits this year too, not to mention that they and birds have eaten my bush bean starts twice now... ALL of em. It’s all so frustrating. And I keep wondering how farmers have managed all these years with so many variables. I certainly have a greater appreciation for them.
And I kinda stress about what will happen if we DO need to depend on this garden. I want to trust God to provide but… I know we have to do our part. It’s not all gonna just spring up outta nothing. God bless farmers and ranchers. Open doors that no man can close and close doors that no man can open.

worked the best) And that ended up making the plants that did NOT get chewed to death produce more---so we still ended up with food to store. So my moral of the story for anyone having problems is ANY garden is better than NO garden. God bless you and your family.

Carolyn, here in the Midwest we have had an unusually late start to the growing season as well. We had cold weather until the last week of April. The farmers didn't get their corn planted until very late. I didn't get to plant my tomatoes until the 3 week of May due to the constant rain. I agree that the time for establishing a garden and orchards is not tomorrow. Many don't realize that fruit and nut trees are often alternate bearing and take years to bear any measurable level of fruit. The only suggestion I can make to help you in your garden is to construct grow tunnels using frost cloth and thin pvc pipes and to place black landscaping fabric between your rows to absorb more of the heat from whatever sun you are getting. These things should help compensate for the lower than normal temperatures in your area. I too can as much as mother nature gives me on the feast years so that the off years are not left without enough to carry your family over.

One of the most important lessons my husband and I have learned is our soils capabilities. There are many vegetables and fruits we would love to grow, but the reality of success relies on the plains environment here. Potatoes?...forget about it. Zucchini? I have oodles of recipes because zucchini grows so well. So does asparagus, broccoli, cabbage ....peas?...no not so well. We fertilize, we green house, we grow vegetables in containers, use horse and chicken manure, we compost and we pray a lot. I remember when my children were small and the cold weather (rain and snow) was persistent. Not only did they get cabin fever, I did too. Finding ways to entertain them was a struggle when all they wanted was to go outside and play.

I’m having the opposite problems. It’s been in the high 90’s for a month now. I got things in later than I wanted and then the intense heat and drought hit so germination has been very poor and growth has been very slow. Typically here in North Texas it doesn’t get this hot until July and by then the plants are well established and most are able to make it through 2 months of intense summer heat. BUT I’m learning so much that will help me be more successful in the future. And just like you’re saying, it’s hammered home the fact that we need to have significantly more stored up than we thought we did.

I’ll trade you the cool rainy weather for my 100 degree dry drought!! I feel you Carolyn. Here in Tennessee we have 3 growing season. I was sick last spring and wasn’t able to get anything out until early May. So I missed the early planting for my peas, beans, annual herbs and brassicas. I also have a Black Walnut tree on my property that I’ve been wanting to cut down because it’s starting to shade out my garden and because it can be harmful to all plants if it’s stressed. Well this year it’s stressed because of our drought. Anything I planted within 20-30 feet of the tree is struggling because of the toxins the roots put out when it’s stressed. So now half of what I planted in May is dying no matter what I do.
The tree is coming down next week, but I should have done it 2 years ago. It’s just expensive to hire an arborist and I was hoping to find someone less costly to buy the tree for woodworking. No luck, so now I have to pay that expense. I’m hoping to have the fall harvest if I start planting in grow bags & planters so the tree won’t affect them. But at least, like you, I have some canning & dried food from last few years. Hope for the best… prepare for the worst.
I’d carry someone up the mountain if it would bring me some rain! Lol. Good luck to you. I hope things turn around ♥️

Thenit starts bolting way too early or dying off...it's my first year trying so it's hard but I'm glad we're not alone! Gotta keep on keepin on...Life's a garden...dig it! In northern Wisconsin, our 4th year of homesteading, we redesigned our garden this year with 30 yards of topoil/compost and 30 yards of mulch, all moved by hand using shoves and wheel barrows! We got our lovely garden planted, after starting seeds in February, March and April, things were growing awesomely but then deer and rabbits! They wiped out sooo many cabbages, broccoli, cauliflowers and more. With no time to start more seeds, we started a plan to put up deer fencing and get seedlings from the Amish greenhouse. Before we got the deer fence up, the deer wiped out a bunch more of our seedlings! This has been a crazy year for our homestead garden, filled with much more work then we anticipated, other projects being put on hold, but we're moving along and things are growing fairly well.
We have a culvert dug out beside our garden so that it's not under water, perhaps that's an idea for your pasture? I hope things take a turn for the better for you guys!

Hi Vanessa! I’m also in northern WI. Can I ask where you got your bulk compost? We are having issues with contaminated compost from nurseries. We are in NE WI

@@agrarianarc Hello! Unfortunately I'm more in the NW part of WI about 30 mins South of Ladysmith. Crescent Landscape is the place. There is a place just South of Wausau called Busy Bee Compost but they seemed fairly expensive to me but they were organic as well, so the price goes up of course.

Well said! We've been homesteading for over a decade now. It's so romantic to others when they first visit us but in reality, growing your own food is hard work and down right frustrating at times. Hot and too dry here, north Georgia.

I am so sorry for you and all the other homesteaders and farmers everywhere. You are all such strong people. That doesn't mean it doesn't bother you it means you are strong because you analyze the problem and you keep going forward. God bless you and your family. May God bless your crops.

This is what so many preppers haven't considered. Theres a huge learning curve to gardening. We started 2 years ago and we have learned SO much but we are still learning! Things will go wrong and u have to adapt, its easier to do that when the stakes are low

Great information. Yes we are in southern Idaho and are experiencing a much cooler year also. Then when it warms up it is extremely hot. We go from 60 one day to 95 the next. It is difficult to keep the garden growing.

It got hot and crispy early here in East TX this summer - thankfully here on our property we have gotten just enough rain to keep things alive! As I write this, God is blessing us with a super soaker!!!🙏😄⛈ So sorry about your calf, every death on the farm is hard… but I feel that each one that happens & every loss and hardship that we face/deal with makes us even more determined to keep trying, to keep learning and then to be an encouragement to others who may experience the same. Hope you guys warm up at least a little bit this season! (A Grand Solar Minimum is a new experience for us all!😬)

We're in ET too. We only got 1/10" this morning and nothing measurable last night but it was so welcome! My one great success this year is my pumpkin patch and sweet potatoes! Tomatoes are just about done.

I've been fortunate enough weather wise, but having animal challenges instead! 😒
I was attempting to prep a raised bed but kept finding "pawprints" so I've had to scrap that Idea unless I can deter whatever's getting in my yard. 💪😉 So I'm left with my containers of veggies, but I've had to run out & chase off birds, squirrels, rabbits and I suspect I saw a shrew once, I even found one container with (potential) volunteer sweet potatoes buried and transplanted tomato suckers on top, but it was knocked over yest morning!!😱 No idea what could've done that 🤷‍♀️ But the fight to survive & keep my plants alive continues like everyone else. It seems every region of every country has varying challenges, no one is "getting off easy" so to speak. 🤔
May God Bless everyone's gardens, all who are on here!

Awe, sorry to hear about the hardships. It's tough some years definitely got to be resilient. We've had record high temperatures, dry my rain barrels are empty! 🤦‍♀️😢 And I cannot seem to beat the cabbage worm on my brassicas I have tried everything. I have restarted them again inside the house near a window that gets plenty of light. Gotta keep moving forward as you say. But on the bumper crop end, we have so many cucumbers we are making pickles pickles and more pickles. We are tired of eating cucumbers but blessed to be able to share them with friends and family!

Thank you for being honest and sharing the struggles and hurdles of "life". I'm sorry you've had difficulties. I've planted a few things in the garden, and all they've done is to not thrive. I mention this because I have allergies and asthma and spending time outside is extremely difficult. Currently re-evaluating our options, and it appears that I need to set up an indoor grow room.

    • @PatrioticHomesteader
      @PatrioticHomesteader 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You comment stood out to me because I too have had lifelong difficulties with allergies. Setting up an indoor grow room did not work out for me due to mold growth on soil surfaces indoors. What did work for me(and I read somewhere that this helps asthma sufferers too) was going on the carnivore diet. I have histamine intolerance. There are lots of foods that cause reactions in people with histamine intolerance. Coconut, citrus, grapes, and anything fermented like wine, vinegar, and soy sauce are some of the main culprits. Be sure to look up “foods that affect asthma”. If you haven’t yet, I think you’ll be surprised. Wishing you success in your future endeavors! 🙏🏻

I'm sorry y'all are having a rough year. We are, too. Delayed seed planting has led to many plants in our garden that are stunted because here in Texas we had about 2 weeks if spring and it jumped straight to summer. We are in a major drought with record breaking temperatures. It's the exact opposite of y'all, but still a major problem. This is is our first year trying to be as self-sufficient as possible, and some lessons that we are learning are just tough. Thanks for your wisdom and words of encouragement.
