Ai Senshi Nicol is a really fun one, a sci-fi dungeon dungeon crawler similar to the style of Zelda. Another one is Moero TwinBee, fun shooter with crazy stuff, though it did come to the US as Stinger. Lastly there is Seiken Psycho Calibur, this one is a direct Zelda clone but a bit harder, it is still a lot of fun. Lastly, the FDS version of Castlevana and Metroid, just for the music and the ability to save.
Thank you Mr.Riggs I recently got a twin famicom for 50 at a flee market and I asked you on a live stream to recomen a couple of disk games and yu said you were making this video.
Awesome video! I like my FDS but I admittedly still don't know much about the library of games for it. My favorites at the moment are games that were also released on the NES like Castlevania, Zelda and Metroid.
Love you guys and what a great idea for a video topic. I knew nothing about the FDS so this was solid knowledge dispensed! MMC looks just like the original Zelda.
I still don't have a famicom, never mind the disk system. When I get one, I'll definitely have to look out for these games. Especially kick challenger air foot, looks very different and awesome!
Great video John! But you forget the coolest thing in Otycky - the "Music mode" with the music editor, where you can write and program your own Famicom music!
Thanks for the vid. Just the other day I was researching FDS and trying to see if there were enough games I would want to/be able to play to justify the purchase
Great picks guys! I used to own Meikyuu Jin Dababa and Arumana no Kiseki back when I was a teen and loved them to bits! Hope you guys get to finish it! In addition to those two (you might want to check these), I had Fuun Shorin Ken (Jaleco), Kamen Rider Black (by Bandai), Fire Bam (by HAL methinks), Hero of Babel (by Pony Canyon), Legend of Zelda I & II and Hao Fushigi no Tabi (Mystery Quest in NA).
Youkai Yashiki is definitely one of the best (probably my favorite next to Murasame Jou), seems pretty rare though. Lucky I found a copy for a good price. KiKi Kai Kai (pocky and rocky in us) is awesome. Ai Nicol (sort of like the top down parts of blaster master) is really good. Seiken Psycho Calibur (basically zelda clone). Super Mario 2 (lost levels). Not including the ones that we all know from the NES.
These games look quite different to NES games, and not just cos of the Japanese writing/titles and not even just cos of the unrecognizable characters, theres something about the style of the games that despite essentially being run on the same hardware, they really look quite different.
Funny enough a lot of people don't know, but the disk system(and the twin Famicom) are upgrades of the FC and the NES, while the NES was slightly better than the FC the disk system added another audio channel as well as some extra RAM I believe. So on games like Castlevania 3 the music have a completely different sound compared to the cart versions. Another thing is saves for basically every game on the system, enabled by the extra space on a disk some games had like 7 save slots. I picked up a Twin a while back and have been exploring the library through emulation before I eventually invest in a setup to write the games I actually want to play onto disks. Another crazy thing is there's apparently a huge community in China still doing mods on the fc and SF, with the old game doctors where they pirates games, I recently saw one where a guy basically wrote a GUI style library where he had a HDD or something attached to his FC playing games. Possibilities are endless if you have the right info and resources
Fun fact: Otocky was conceived and designed by Toshio Iwai, who also made the canceled Super Famicom Sound Fantasy and Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS. So he dabbled a fair bit in odd musical games.
Pretty good games for a disk system... Never owned one as a kid and still haven't played one as an adult! I need to look for one, I can see myself having a lot of fun with the famicom disk system...
Cool! Gall Force was the first anime I ever purchased on LaserDisc. (Possibly my first anime purchase ever - not counting Americanized titles like Speed Racer.) Neat to see a game based on it.
My cousin had that bio miracle game on a Chinese multicard back in the day and the game was named baby Mario and the sprite was made to look more like baby Mario. Good fun game indeed.
hahah "I know with the tomatoes"... at least you're getting your Vitamin C Riggs with all your 8 bit veggie favorites. I just bought Moreo Twin Bee, Electrician, Yuu Maze, Super Lode Runner, Replicant, and Doki Doki. Next up is Bio Miracle, Metroid, and Otocky...good picks guys, learned a few new ones today.
TSGSpartan I would recommend u spend aruound 165 to 180 on a sharp twin turbo with new belt installed the belts break easy so look for one with a strongerore dirable belt the turbos have longer cords and turbo buttons installed the buttons don't matter but the extra length of cord does
I've seen that sticker with Mario on it before because I've been browsing the FDS on eBay myself. Below Mario and the other character, it says "Nintendo" and "Fuji Terebi" ("Fuji Television"). It most likely symbolizes the partnership between the two companies that this game was a part of. Check out The Gaming Historian's video about the game if you want to learn more.
Hi, John! Just curious about how you store these precious disk-formatted games. I'm sure you already know that they tend to demagnetize over time and they are quite delicate in regards to dust and humidity, so maybe you had special care when storing 'em. I dunno, I might be too obsessed about it but when I'm collecting for the system it worries me quite a while hahaha. Sorry for my bad English as it is not my mother tongue. Keep it up, bro.
Very helpfull video, thank you! But you should mute the background music when a game is shown. It clashes with the soundtrack and tt's just a sound overload.
Love the video and love the FDS. I dont know why but i've never had any real love for cart systems. I loved old 16 bit cd systems and I absolutely love Japanese Disk based systems like the msx or the x68000. To bad only the fds is actually something affordable these days. I guess you guys where aiming for no us released games and no obvious ones. Cause everyone needs to own Zelda 1 and 2, metroid and castlevania 1 and 2 obviously.
hello i am searching for a nintendo Side-scrolling game i remember the character was looking like snoppy the dog and he has a stick that helped him to jump also was an ice level that was very slippery You had to collect keys to unlock a level. When you hit walls with the stick it will bounce off and character spins in cercles. I know it sounds like Duck Tales but i think is a different game. i think maybe is a Nintendo ROMhacks or Famicom of an original game.
You might want to check a certain website I can't link, let's just say it's another term for Loving Compact Discs (I don't condone piracy or anything of the sort)
DUST DUST DUST OMG I am tweaking lol...seriously John great video but thats too nice of a system to be dusty mine is the same with the blue green label
The FDS is great, though at this stage it's better to just emulate the games or use an Everdrive. FamicomDojo had a good video about the system a while back. th-cam.com/video/CW0rirNy-qA/w-d-xo.html
Why did people adapt the word "shmup"? Is it really that hard to say "shoot em' up" or even just shoot THEM up? I don't get shmup. It actually annoys me a little lol. Shmup. Shmup. ugh. Shoot em' up games. Next thing you know, we'll simply let out a gasp of air to say the word. "shhm". LAY ZEEE. lol. Just jabbin'. ;) Thanks for the list!
No disrespect or anything but the FDS sucks! I hate most of the games on it and the few I liked were actually really fun. This list gives me a few more to emulate on my ol' DS Lite though. Will try the Gall Force and Ultraman games. There's 3 of the latter on the FDS with 2 being action platformers and the last is just a generic RPG.
What are some other great Famicom Disk System games? Let us know!!
I was going to recommend that one as well. It's a pretty fun one and my favorite I've played so far on the FDS.
Ai Senshi Nicol is a really fun one, a sci-fi dungeon dungeon crawler similar to the style of Zelda. You can also play FDS games with the NES Everdrive. :)
Which Famicom Disk System Games are affordable ???
Kiki Kai Kai
Thanks again for inviting me to participate in this video. It was a ton of fun talking about the Famicom Disk System!
Thank you Mr.Riggs I recently got a twin famicom for 50 at a flee market and I asked you on a live stream to recomen a couple of disk games and yu said you were making this video.
3:01 So, THAT'S where NormalBoots got their jingle.
My thoughts exactly lol
Excellent timing! I was just able to get a Famicom+Famicom Disk System and now I'm on the hunt for some great games to play. Thanks for the video!
Great video guys! I know very little about the games on the FDS, so this was super helpful information.
Great! Now I have to go listen to the A Nightmare on Elm Street NES soundtrack.
Awesome video! I like my FDS but I admittedly still don't know much about the library of games for it. My favorites at the moment are games that were also released on the NES like Castlevania, Zelda and Metroid.
Oh hey that game-over tune on Falsion is the old NormalBoots intro song. Sweet!

Thank you, Mr. Riggs. Good episode. To see a Sharp Twin FC getting some spotlight game love is always cool.
I actually happened to own a Sharp twin Famicom ( Colors:Black/green+blue+red-buttons ) Thanks for the floppy disk game recommendations John Riggs😏
thanks for the video ::0 i recently got my hands on a famicom and have a disk system on the way so this just filled my games to buy list
Good video. Besides the Indy game I didn't know any of these. Happy I came upon this
That baby game reminded me so much of smbro2 then you also dropped doki doki panic. The level was so close but still great vid
Good to see Christopher Pico on a Riggs vid. Btw where the Hell you get that Actraiser shirt?

Great video! Excited to see this sort of stuff on your channel!

Metal Jesus lead me here I love all your retro channels
Fun fact: Otocky was conceived and designed by Toshio Iwai, who also made the canceled Super Famicom Sound Fantasy and Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS. So he dabbled a fair bit in odd musical games.
Love your channel, keep on the good work!
Nice picks! Had not heard of a lot of these
Pretty good games for a disk system... Never owned one as a kid and still haven't played one as an adult! I need to look for one, I can see myself having a lot of fun with the famicom disk system...

John Riggs my friend, you are a legend. I love the channel. God bless and thanks for another great video. I really appreciate it!
You should come out to the game convention in Austin,Tx! It’s in late July I believe. I’m going to try to go to this one this year!
I may if invited, but it's too far to drive for me.
Off the subject, and im sure people have already asked, but where did you get the cool art on your wall? Particularly the Pilot wings piece.
I almost forgot you ever had a musical opening been a long time since I've seen it
OH man, I didn't realize you had the sharp twin. Thats awesome!
That baby game always comes up in this topic. I really need to try it sometime. Great lists guys.
It's a fun platformer. Unique to say the least.
Just figured out how the FDS works on my raspberry pi. Thank you for your services
The borderline disdain you had in your voice when you said "It's a platformer... You play as a baby..." cracked me up.
Thank you for this John!! I love the Famicom Disk System and in particular the Twin Famicom! I own a black one just like yours 🤘🤘🤘🤘
5:23 This game is awesome - thanks for the recommendation :)
Love the FDS
"Everything you know and love about the American version of Mario Bros. 2 is in here"? Except for growing and shrinking when powering up and down :P
My cousin had that bio miracle game on a Chinese multicard back in the day and the game was named baby Mario and the sprite was made to look more like baby Mario. Good fun game indeed.
That tomato game looks like a typical japanese fun oriented game of the time. Very cool.
hahah "I know with the tomatoes"... at least you're getting your Vitamin C Riggs with all your 8 bit veggie favorites. I just bought Moreo Twin Bee, Electrician, Yuu Maze, Super Lode Runner, Replicant, and Doki Doki. Next up is Bio Miracle, Metroid, and Otocky...good picks guys, learned a few new ones today.
ironically, I don't like eating tomatoes at all.
So I have been thinking of getting a sharp twin. But unsure of what to spend. I have been surprised at how cheap the discs can be.
TSGSpartan I would recommend u spend aruound 165 to 180 on a sharp twin turbo with new belt installed the belts break easy so look for one with a strongerore dirable belt the turbos have longer cords and turbo buttons installed the buttons don't matter but the extra length of cord does
Looks great but where do you find any games.
I liked this video. It reminded me of a video a Screwattack contributor would have made back in the day.

is that an rgb port in the back?

Love that portrait with ya kids sliding down your head lol
Great video!
Hey Riggs any budget disk games worth playing??? All of the ones I come across are quite pricey
Sure! Several are, but some are text-heavy.
Riggs. What is the best way to capture famicom disc footage? Like the highest quality?
Probably an HDMI-modded NES + old school Famicom Disk System through the RAM adapter. I just used composite jacks 'cuz that's what I got.
Or the Retro AVS, which is an HDMI nes with Famicom/Disk System support.
Andrew Brandt I just got an AVS because the Analogue NT is sold out. Where do you get the famicom disc adaptor?
Very helpfull video, thank you! But you should mute the background music when a game is shown. It clashes with the soundtrack and tt's just a sound overload.
Awesome video
Thank you!

Kid Dracula. It's another Konami game, I believe. It's pretty great.
hello i am searching for a nintendo Side-scrolling game

@@dingusbingus7463 is ok i found it was Kaiketsu 3
YES Mysterious Murasame Castle is the shit! One of the first fds games I picked up. Never beat it because its sooo hard
I never beat it, either.
Great video. Need to hack my NES classic for these great games.
new sub! love your channel!
Thank you and welcome!!
Man, I bought Murasame on the 3ds and like it, but it is insanely difficult.
No Mario 2 or Zelda? I know we got Zelda on NES and EVENTUALLY got Mario 2 in all stars on the SNES, but still, great games.
Rabite890 ah, yeah that's a good point.
Are there any games you're looking for? I can keep an eye out!
I really wanna find a working Twin Famicom, looks really cool :),Id love to play on it
It's my optimal way of playing. I used the old FDS console for a while, but this was all-in-one for convenience.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I bet its more convenient
Awesome had a few of those Konami games
DUST DUST DUST OMG I am tweaking lol...seriously John great video but thats too nice of a system to be dusty mine is the same with the blue green label
that so looks like a game for me that one thats like indiana jones castlevania and bionic commando and the music is amazing in it
Someone found a way to put it on an NES cart, too. But the music isn't exactly the same.
Has anyone made a new machine to read the famicom disks?
What does shmup mean?
JCreazy it's short for Shoot'Em Ups that are games where you fly and shoot things.
True. I know a few who refuse to say it, too, which is all good. Like how I refuse to called a Super Nintendo a "snesss" one-syllable word.
Wardner No Mori & Kiki Kai Kai.
How could you not include Yokai Yashiki??
+1 for Arumana no Kiseki
Good sound floppy diskette
Gall Force
Gyruss is my fav.
Oh heck yeah
oh rad!
No Kaetekitta Mario Bros. ?
I have the ultraman game :)
JACKEL!! HOW CAN YOU SKIP IT WHY. Try it is a great jeep shmup
It was channel 95
cool

May cue jeen dababa
I heard the FDS version of Metroid is harder.
Doki doki panic after becoming smb2 then got ported back to Japan as Super Mario USA actually.
Why did people adapt the word "shmup"? Is it really that hard to say "shoot em' up" or even just shoot THEM up? I don't get shmup. It actually annoys me a little lol. Shmup. Shmup. ugh. I like it
Yeah man sucks dont live in Japan so can just go to a HardOff an pick all that stuff up for cheap :)
Man, how Konami has fallen.
i may just get a famicom disk system. games seem cheap
We already know Zelda 2 is definitely not on this list, because the U.S. version is much more superior.
No disrespect or anything but the FDS sucks! I hate most of the games on it and the few I liked were actually really fun. This list gives me a few more to emulate on my ol' DS Lite though.
