      Yeah, that's honestly dissapointing, the "mammals in all but name" group are the sapients while the Birds becomes...insects.
      I am fascinated with the idea of sapient birds and that was sad.

      …..sapient birds outnumber sapient terrestrial guppies?
      Edit: The canary descendants have produced multiple sapients on Serina by this point in the story. The guppies have produced just one.

    Great video. I wish you'd gone into a little more detail about why the boundary trees were so important to the Gravediggers, though.
    For anyone who hasn't read it, the Gravediggers started as solitary, highly territorial hunters. As a result, they only experienced social interactions as juveniles, until their instincts took over and they became aggressive to any others of their species except during mating or raising offspring. As a result, they had limited abilities to communicate, exchanging ideas and developing culture. The artwork on the boundary trees, which eventually became a form of writing, was the work-around they developed to create social interactions and exchange information. That artwork helped them to develop beyond simply making tools and traps.

    • @bkjeong4302
      @bkjeong4302 3 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      This artwork ended up becoming written language not only for gravediggers, but also for woodcrafters (which had no written language before the gravediggers taught them)

    • @iSyriux
      @iSyriux 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      What? If you're referring to the human-ant dynamic, not only are they completely different species in completely different conditions, but biological altruism is incredibly unlikely to unfold in any world, especially in Serina. Firstly, ants are little tiny insects which operate in a hive mind behaviour using pheromones to convey very basic messages. An ant alone is as intelligent as any other non-hive mind insect. Humans on the other hand, are the most intelligent animal on earth and have been for millions of years since the dawn of mankind. Naturally, being the omnivores we are, intraspecies altruism would never develop, except if you consider the domestication of pets and livestock as such.
      The "Fish-Deer" and "Bird-Badger" dynamic as you call it is also extremely unlikely. The moon is vast and it would take ages for one single specimen to convey information to the entire species. Just because they're herbivorous doesn't mean they're pacifists.

      @@iSyriux Biological altruism is common on Earth, so what makes you think it would not happen on another world seeded with Earth life? Besides, what humans have is just plain old altruism, any intelligent creature with a strong social structure will engage in altruistic behavior, and it isn't much of a stretch for this altruism to extend to other species. Humans are not the only animal shown to engage in interspecific altruism (not biological altruism, which doesn't require any degree of altruistic thoughts but is helping another organism reproduce while decreasing its likelihood to reproduce, you can engage in altruism for another species without reducing your own likelihood for reproduction).
      The fact that we see many species engage in both biological altruism AND interspecific altruism, and they're not isolated examples, disproves your premise that they're unlikely to develop.

    It seems to me that the intelligence worked the way it would if dragons really existed and they really did start out destroying villages and stealing hoards and all that. Such a story would probably end the same way as this saga. With the dragons being the ones doing simple art and other signs, a human adopting a dragon, and - basically the same kind of thing. Any of those fantasy worlds with a dragon rider plot might have had a similar backstory. heck, How To Train Your Dragon kind of did, although the dragons in that series of movies seem more comparable to cetaceans in terms of intelligence and development, though with a different social organization.

    Unfortunatley, the alliance between the woodcrafters and the gravediggers would be tragically short. After only 10000 years, the climate cooled to a point where the woodcrafters could no longer sustain their groves or their offspring. While the gravediggers spread out to the oceans, developed their technology, and became canoe rowing fishermen, the woodcrafters were unwilling to change their ways. By the time the woodcrafters followed the gravediggers to the sea and found that they could eat the seaweed there, their numbers had fallen beyond the point of return. The last woodcrafter died among her gravediggers friends and encouraged them to remember her kind in the ocean age to come.

    The detail of intelligence evolving twice and at the same time due to a direct predator prey relationship is a nice way off handling the statistical improbability of both appearing at the same time. However, it still doesn't make complete sense. If the Ear Deer Fish People were much more able to avoid the Badger Fish People traps then the Badger Fish People would just focus on the animals that were far too stupid to potential evolve sapience... However, if the Ear Deer Fish People were literally the only large game then that would still drive the Badger Fish People to strive to catch them, even if they could still subsist off of smaller game during the hard times.
    It's an unstable dynamic that could easily have led to one species suddenly being wiped out by the other, but it could work out as described.
