- PART 4: Going to Plan B could save your life. Sometimes hikers get so focused on accomplishing their wilderness goals, they lose sight of the danger that creeps upon them. They may have over reliance on their fitness levels, their LCBs, and their gear. Conditions change rapidly and can pose lethal threats in high alpine environments. In this Nutnfancy backpack adventure with friend "Cr0cket20," you will see how we divorce ourselves from ego to make the right call at about 10,000 ft elevation on an icy, foggy, and sleet driven glacier. I try to be ready for about any alpine emergency, carried within my Kelty SuperTioga backpack. But good gear preparation is actually just a small part of the equation. It can't and won't compensate for poor judgement and foolishness. As shown in this adventure series, despite excellent rain gear and insulation, in these sleeting and drenching conditions it is impossible to stay dry while on the slope. Core temperatures can plummet rapidly. This consideration along with occasional zero-zero visibility conditions, our tiredness levels while on the steep slope, the passing storms (thunder and lighting too), lack of crampons and ice gear, and approaching darkness made my decision clear as the "Expedition Leader" to change our plans and get out of there. Maybe it was a "Glacier Call" that kept us safe. Descending to our bugout location, we bivouac in the driving rain and sleet. Tents are erected, we don some dry clothes, crank the stoves, and warm food and hot chocolate bring some comfort. This drama was thematic for the trip but along the way we did have fun: discussing gear, observing and showing the beauty, cutting up, and enjoying the antics of our friend and faithful companion "Allie the Mountain Dog," highly trained for this environment. Along the way you will meet another well-prepared and experienced hiker with his male Great Dane dog that passes us as we break camp. He is summit-bound. We discussed the seriousness of the conditions and our experiences. Trails were buried in feet of snow, making navigation tougher and more exhausting as well. Pausing for several hours of photography, this same hiker passes us on the way down, having made the same call that we did. After finding himself in a whiteout (storm) as we had, he found himself hiking in circles around a rock outcropping. Like us, he made the right decision, called it a day, and retreated immediately to lower elevations. He too lived to hike another day. I give a big thank you to my friend Cr0cket20 who was a great companion on this Nutnfancy memory. You rock! /////////////////// Music: Kevin MacLeod, Torley Wong, and Jimmy G
Nutn, you out did yourself man! This was such a well done series and probably one of my favorites. You put your heart into this stuff and I really appreciate that about you. Thanks for putting this together....all of it from adventure to production.
GC was awesome, really enjoyed it! Just wish there was more!
Only nutnfancy's viewers come back 3 years later to relive the memory. Awesome!
Glacier Call is one of my top videos on youtube. Thank You Nutn for putting forth the effort to take your viewers with you on this hike and I hope there will be more. You and the rest of the crew make TH-cam worth watching.
NUTN, I've been in broadcast television for over 40 years and I can say you are a true video professional. You know how to move the story along, you are "Camera Aware" while on-camera, you know how to cut video and shape the story. You really do have career in this and hope to meet you someday. My congrats
Nutn every time you release a vid I can't work out what type of vids I like most (gun/knife review, adventure, shop visit etc) because the latest one always becomes my favorite as it's better than the last release!
Thanks to you and all involved for all the work - it shows!
Good good stuff guys, I finally had a chance to finish watching Glacier Call & what an adventure it was. It just goes to show that each & every time in the outdoors is a new experience.
Thanks for bringing us all along for another great adventure.
Man, you've really been pumping out these videos over the past couple days! Your hard work is appreciated!
Excellent series Nutn & Crocket. I enjoyed the emphasis on being prepared and safety conscious. I enjoy these types of remote adventures and can see you do as well. Thumbs up!
I just love this adventure. It has two of my favourite youtubers on an adventure together which is one of my reasons but I just seem to remind myself of some things and find something to learn each time. Revisited it again for like the 5th or 6th time and as I get more competent I just pickup more and more. It's on my bucket list to go backpacking with nutn/crocket for sure :) Live for adventure friends!
Incredible series, nutn! Thanks for bringing the camera and doing all the work associated with that.
Very cool hiker that came back down. Experienced, loves the outdoors, and seemed on board with a lot of your philosophy!
Allie is SUCH a sweet, intelligent, beautiful dog!!! Thank you for highlighting her a bit in this video! Makes me smile every time I hear you talking to her! I can tell she loves her daddy!
This was an awesome series of videos, NutnFancy and Crocket20! Thank you for bringing this to us all!
Another excellent outdoor series from TNP. Great scenery we never see here out East, the Rockies are beautiful, and wild. Thanks for the videos, well done!
Looked like a tough trip. They are the best way to learn. Looking back, the more uncomfortable i was, the more i learned. You guys were right on about safety. Caution is always best in any extreme environment. Love the vids, plz keep em coming!
Hey Nutn', It's been a while since I chimed in on one of your video's though I have kept up watching them all. I thoroughly enjoyed this series, all 2.5+ hours of it. Just like to thank you and all of the TNP family for all your commitment to TNP. Keep up the great work.
You're videos are better quality than any history/ discovery productions in this genre I think you may have even created a new genre. Well done once again. I think big media needs to take an intructional course on how to make an instructional heartfelt video from you!!!
The perfect end to another awesome adventure series!
This is better than TV. Way better!
Another awesome vid. I've got a hike planed for my son and I next week. Seriously thanks for motivating me.
@wkgm11 So many tents, so little time. I do recommend the Gunnison 2 as shown although you may want strength. I that case go with Mountain Hardwear Lightwedge 3 @ 7 lbs 10 oz upgraded [ 7 lbs 8 oz factory], 96x74 floor, 47” high, 44 sq ft + 11.8 sq ft vestibule). A rockin' tent I will review sometime. Thanks for the support and watching mate.
Well....I just completed this final episode.
Excellent....absolutly excellen this series was.It reminded me of when I hiked up the Brecon Beacons in Wales, UK with my cousin. Good memories.
Thanks for the flashback Nutn.
I always love watching your stuff.
I may not comment much, but I love them.
Rob.
(Brisbane, Australia)
Spent a great afternoon watching the 4 parts of "Glacier Call". Perfect! Learned much. Thanks to Nutn, Crocket20, and Allie for a great trip!
Love this series of videos! I live in the Appalachian mountains and hike as much as possible here. Been fortunate enough to spend a few vacations in Colorado and hiked some 14ers. These videos take me back to all those breathtaking views! Thanks for posting and hope to see more hiking vids in the future!
Excellent way to wrap up that series. Great job guys, cool production and music too.
Great video series. That's some awesome scenery. Wish we had places like this around here. I've been on the part of the Florida Hiking trail just a few miles from my house, but it's pretty flat 'round these parts. Hope to get out and experience this one day soon (although maybe not as extreme as what you and Crocket experienced). You rock, thanks for sharing your adventure.
Awesome! These videos RULE! Love the mountains!!
Yeah, so many people hike unprepared. They don't check the weather, don't have contingency gear, they don't think ahead. You hear of people during the summer months climbing a mountain in shorts and sneakers carrying little more than a water bottle. Then the weather changes quickly and they are exposed. Seriously bad situations. Gotta be prepared! Not only for yourself but to be able to help others too!
Great series. I have to get out more. Everything you say about finding the time, making the time, preparing for and cleaning up after the trip is right on. We basically go through a great deal of trouble and work to make ourselves less comfortable than we would be at home, but once you get out there, as beautiful and fascinating as your video shots are, it doesn't come close to describing the experience. Not even 10% I have to make more time to get out.
You took the best decision by turning back and try on another time. I have done it too. I am an experienced hiker and I would have backed you up. One time did it climbing the Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico, we didn't have the right equipment neither the training for ice climbing, so we decided to turn back, besides mountain sickness. I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them, keep it up !
Nutn´s adventure videos are the best. Thanks for sharing these moments with us.
Great Dane hiker, what an awesome looking dog dude!
Thanks for the great tour Nutn & Crocket, more of these hikes, they are just great especially when you start using hiking gear etc... in real situations
Great stuff, I really enjoyed it. Way to bring home the reality of an outdoors experience. The good the bad and the lessons to be learned
This is a serious hike on a nice summer day which I've done several times but I can only imagine the conditions encountered on this trip... Sometimes that sort of snow is not even safe with all the equipment available. Spring slush has always given me nightmares and I personally will not hike far in it. Good on ya for heading back.
Excellent series nutn, one of my favorites so far, 3 cheers!
Crocket is not only a good adventure buddy but a very good camera man. Loved this one and although I may never get into these types of conditions based on my principal residence, the theories are usable. Thanks Nutn.
Awesomeness, Nutnfancy! This is exactly why I try to turn people on to your videos! Good time, good entertainment, good information based upon actual usage. I'm also glad that you bring Allie; the relationship that you portray with her sends a very positive message out to people. Dogs can be important members of the family and it is fairly common for people to undervalue the contribution that their pets can make in their lives. Of course, dogs are also GREAT mirrors of their owners.
Im sad to see the weather was so crappy for you guys, been there many times but you deal with it and learn alot from the experience that makes the fairweather trips cake ..thanks for the vids as always
Awesome series as usual Nutn, thank you for all the effort and sharing!
What a neat adventure you and Crocket went on. I was in the Rockies I late Apr. And early May. I live in the mid west and we were having awesome weather. Outside of Denver it was raining. In an hour later snow and when I stopped for Lunch a total of 12 inches of snow. I was not prepared for that. Never gave it a thought. I will be in Utah this spring same time, backpacking and I will be prepared. Lesson learned
Excellent series of vids Nutn. They bring back some very fond memories of my father and brother and I hiking trails on Pikes Peak in Colorado. Nothing as serious as this, but my father taught my brother and I many lessons that I get to pass on to my son. Only so much I can teach him here in Florida though. Love the vids Nutn, keep rockin man.
Oh my, that was hardcore. I felt the pain in front of my screen.
Thank you very much for this very interesting video.
Greetings from Germany.
Hey Nutn Awesome series. Love how you dovetailed some reviews into the experience. I want to go with you next time man. Awesome as always dude. Thanks, Steve.
That was a great adventure! Thanks guys & Allie for sharing it with us.
I really like this set of vids... Not only does it really show how much you need to prepare for the worst case scenario PRIOR to your trip...but also how you need to think 3-4 steps ahead of the current game plan. Thinking of the "what if?" factors and thinking of solutions can save your hide...as shown! It might look like you've aged 5 years since you went up (LOL!) but you came back down....and you LEARNED. VERY important aspect of ANY trip. LEARNING. AWESOME vids guys!
Just finished watching all of these glacier call series and I love all of them
Thank you nutnfancy and crew. These videos are entertaining and informative. I wish I had the time to do this. When my young daughters get older, I'll have to make the time. Also, I'll second the commenters who suggest "foodsaver" sealing your dry clothes (and any other gear you want to keep dry) as a feasible way to go.
i think a rain cover is mainly for keeping your pack cloth dry. a pack liner is needed to keep stuff dry under continuous rainfall, i use a (very) thick industrial garbage bag in the main compartment, those ones without dots. it can keep water from soaking in from all directions but the top, while the rain cover's got that covered, so they work hand in hand. i'm still very young so i have limited experience, but being born and raised in sub-tropical areas taught me a bit about rain
Thanks is an excellent series -- a good, practical case for preparedness
Thanks for the series nutn, very enjoyable and inspiring...I'm hoping to start doing some hikes of my own starting out slow of course since I'm relatively new to this type of hiking.
I don't know how many times I have watched this video, it has made me know when to get out. Thanks for leaving when you had to / family.
@mizfit32 I don't think I can annotate that...I just let it happen naturally. I sure do appreciate it though when guys take the time to do it. Peace and thanks for watching.
@WarnerKrause Many thanks...trying to clear my plate off with all the adventures and outings. Each series is a tremendous amount of work to make in making them THEN making the videos. Sure is fun though.
Thanks for the series; full of entertainment and valuable information. Makes me itchin' to get back to the Rockies and hit some 14ers or a wilderness area again. I wish you had time to do more. I am not a couch potatoe, don't watch much tv, but I like to get on You Tube every night for a little while. I always look forward to a nutnfancy vid!
Be well.
Great editing and great Series i learned a lot and would like to thank you nutn for this great thing your doing for all of us and devoting so much time to people that you don't even know!!! KUDOS and Veri great job helping nutn and making it so this all could happen we truly appreciate you both!!! learned a heck of a lot and will be prepared for the next time i hike!!!!!!!!!
Great Video man, thanks for sharing this adventure with us, keep em coming!
No joke when it comes to mountain hiking. I live/work/play in Banff, AB. Sept 20th we enjoyed 20degree(Celsius) weather all day then around 7pm it started snowing. By morning we had several inches of snow. Bad news for noob hikers.
Great vid keep up the good work.
Grim
Thanks for Sharing that with us Nutn, great vid to watch, keep em coming!
this is by far your best series of videos
Thanks for the ride. I would loved to be there but the video was nice. Would had like to have more details on the night setup.
watched all four parts, really enjoyed the trip. Thanks
Enjoyed the video and the music. Keep producing them. Thanks
Thanks for taking me along on your adventure.
Had a great time with you three and never left the comfort of home!
Great series. I always like these adventure vids.
Ah yes.....great series.... thanks for all the extra time and work making the video
Great series. Your best work I think.
I was bowhunting in Oregon one time, got into some fog, think, swore up and down I was walking in a straight line (I am a pilot, and been deep in the bush in Alaska). Finally I was absolutely blown away, when I found myself damn near at the same place I started from.
I literally made a CRUDE sun dial, it was just terrible, found a shadow and navigated straight with it. GPS would not work due to trees and heavy cover, it was a huge learn.
Crocket are you kidding me? The NASA rain cover didnt work? lol great vid guys, that hiker was sweet!
Thanks for taking us along on your trip.. I enjoyed watching them. =D
Alluding to the guys' convo re: YT; This was almost 2 hours of rock-solid entertainment (humor, 'good drama', gorgeous wilderness) and information. Were this on TV this would be pared down to 13 mins of 'content', 13 mins of commercials, and 4 mins of intro/outro credits. Much of the 'content' would have been Nut and Cr0ck telling the camera how much they hate the other guy and some hokey, 'serious' voiceover about the dangers. Gents and Allie: TYVM! And TY TNP for all the great vid series'.
Totally agree with Nutn's point about MREs! Had a backpacking trip early this year(around the time snow cruise came out) up in the colorado mountains and I packed in 6(yes six!) full MREs and a close friend took some freeze dried food and he had a miserable time making that stuff!!! He ended up mooching off of one of our other buddies' MREs(I split a case of 12 with him) He is now going to order his MREs for our next hiking trip! Lessons learned INDEED!
great series. Allie steals the spotlight and thats a good thing. Great vid!
That whole shot from 7:41 to 8:15 is great. It really shows how DIFFICULT it is for rescuers to spot someone in the wild. Thats why you do need to carry a Rescue Strob Light or something that is High Viz just for situations like that.
Otherwise a rescue chopper could just fly right by you and not see you.
great set of vids nutn, im surprised that you didn't talk about having a big survival knife on you? did you have one with you? and did you ever find out more about that other hiker that kept going up?
awesome set off videos
and super dog
I can't believe you didn't dump that pack the second you reached the truck. You talked for like 10 minutes with that 80 pound beast on your back. You're a tough dude, that's for sure.
@scargill8 Yes! I asked Nutn about this and he said they would be great, just get to know the breed characteristics and "adjust accordingly". Either one would probably have an advantage over Allie because of their fur. -- Veri
Nutn, love the backpacking vids! I'm thinking about bringing a camera along on my backpacking adventures (just was up at 11,700 the other night). What kind of camera are you using and what do you use for editing software? Any pointers are appreciated. Again man, love the vids; keep up the good work! If you're in the SoCal area give me a holler and we'll head up to the high Sierras. Thanks in advance.
I love this. Great video. Great messages. Thumbs up nutn, you are a class guy
Awesome vids man. looked like a blast.
Those plastic garbage bags are pretty good to have with you. Fold up 3 or 4 and dump them in a pocket. They can be used for tons of stuff. Emergency rain poncho, backpack cover ;D, gear water protection in the backpack, slit open to help reinforce a lean-to (Leanto?), water traps, just to name a few. For their weight, they are improv gold. If i was loading a backpack, i´d well concider taking a full roll of them.
Don't know if you have tried this Nutnfancy but I am an Eagle Scout and when doing adventures in places like New Mexico and even Alaska we find that putting your extra clothes in a heavy duty freezer bag not only conserves a LOT of space but keeps them bone dry. Just thought I would give you a suggestion.
Loved the series and I was just wondering do you stretch at all before you go on these long hikes to keep from cramping because everytime i go on long hikes i cramp up afterwards?
hey nutn great series good to see you back on the trail where I first discovered you. I know I have said you dont like talking about stuff you havnt tried yourself BUT could you do a short vid on current tents on market I NEED a knew on but am Aussie and have to order on net. I really like your boulder 300 but discontinued have beenn lookin at REI Quarter Dome T3 Plus are they good
great series. thanks for all the hard work. p.s. Verri is an amazing editior.
You have surprised me since this is not your job and you still manage to make great quality videos and very good videos.
great scenary , looked like u guys had loads of fun
Another great vid series! Thanks nutn!
The scenery looks very tranquil.
good video nutn, I like these adventure videos best. thanks
Awesome video series Nutn.
Outstanding job Nutn and Cr0cket20!
That was a hardcore hike guys...Congradulations.
bloody good stuff, Physical limits must be known about , and for each loadout all times, 7 P's Principles, redundancy, , remember as Leonardo da Vinci said, "Knowledge comes from Experience" but we can do Courses first these days, he could not
1. Good Job gents glad you made it back okay.
2. I noticed Cocket looked a litte sun/wind burned in the face and NutNfancy did not. Sun block?
Great series!
@krenzzzo I actually did not wear any sun block in this rainy weather but usually I do...not sure about Cr0cket20.
Another great tnp project video series
I love Nutnfancy, I love Allie the mtn dog, I love Mrs. Nutnfancy, I love Veri and I love TNP.
Happy New Year.
Who watches TV when you are subscribed to Nutn's channel ? I always say this is the best vid you have ever made untill the next one .... ;)
Nutnfancy you gotta do more of the back packing and camping vids. u just gotta, we all learn a lot from them
