    So cool. It captures that weird Tony description of playing pulse vs playing beats.

    Hi again Rick! I’m really impressed at how you are clearly a disciplined percussionist, solid reader with ability in many styles-but you also really burn it and swing with the post-bop drumming-many people excel at either one or the other-you’ve eaten the whole enchilada! Great exercises, I’ll be exploring the concepts in the video in my daily practice for sure! Peace-Greg Burrows

    Impressive, to say the least. You are as skilled with jazz as you are with snare. Very impressive. Great video.

    Hi Rick another great lesson, I am still confused about where the bass drum comes in the up and down motion ,does it mean the play's the up beat after every quarter note.
    Does get explain in the your book.
    Regards david

      Hi David, I’m sure Rick will answer your question but I’ll take a quick stab at it-I’d say the bass drum is more free than you think-it can go on the quarter notes, on upbeats, or on any other beat. In modern post-bebop drumming, your bass drum is very free to express yourself and interact with your band partners (unless you are playing a tight arrangement/song). Rick, does that sound right to you?

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Greg
      It is important to practice these in a disciplined manner at first so you can learn new and unfamiliar combinations. So alternate first leading with both the BD and then the SD. after you do all the pages like that you should improvise.
      Thanks for writing.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David
      I would start by trying to play every otherwritten note with the bass drum. So alternate the Bass Drum and Snare Drum according to the written rhythms. Do this by starting the entire page with either the BD or the SD, (so 2 ways) and be disciplined in the way you are executing that. After you master that you can improvise. It is important to be very exact in the way you practice at first so that you are not leaning into the natural tendencies of your body to go into comfortable patterns.
