This song is paralyzing me every time. Such emotion that comes from her heart and the lyrics fantastic. I think with this song she wants to say a big "thank you" to her family that take care of her and protect her. Bravo Angelina .
Thanks again for continuing to react to Angelina with these beautiful reactions, Soul. This for me is an exceptional song, for the music, for the lyrics, for how well balanced it's and to finish because it is made by a 12 year old girl. If you think about it, the subject of the texts is certainly not what every twelve year old thinks, but it is natural for her instead to understand that she is still very young, even if unique, and therefore she needs a shield, between her and the world, that can easily ruin or destroy her, just as it has happened to many talented and young artists, even among those she admire, such as Avicii, Amy, Whitney. This is why I believe that, after all, although there is no official confirmation, the lyric are referring to her mother and perhaps also to her grandmother (the director of this video), they are the ones who defend she, in particular (I think) from the dangers of the entertainment industry. ❤️❤️

This song is one more example of the many sounds and styles that Angelina can sing. When you compare this to the last one you did "what is life", her versatility really shows. They are completely different, but both very Angelina. You will see even more versatility as you go through her other originals too.
I am really looking forward to seeing the types of songs Angelina is going to be writing as she gets older She has such a strong grasp on so many different styles, that I think as she merges and melts these styles together in her own works, she is going to give us stuff like we've never heard before. Many of the greats throughout music history have been people that changed music by combining ideas from many places into something new. I think Angelina is going to become one of those greats.

I recently received a copy of Angelina's book, 'Mellom to hjerter' (Between Two Hearts). It is very high quality, with dozens of full-page illustrations. Hardbound, 8-1/2" x 9" with every page a different color, mostly pastel shades. Quite an accomplishment, and obviously a labor of love.

This video for this was the work of Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani. Mery did the video for 'Fly Me to the Moon' which was also in a desert setting. Mery Zamai is an artist. Her paintings are in the background of many of Angelina's videos and the pattern on the outfit at the beginning (also worn by Angelina on AGT), is Mery's design.

I just started listening to her last month...now I can't stop. I don't usually follow many singers, but she is more than a singer. She's a revelation. I hope that she never sells her self out to the mainstream music industry.

She actually said in the interview I saw that she was inspired by the James Bond themes and her favorites were Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger. She said that it was, indeed, about the way someone who loves you can protect you and be your shield from the troubles and hurt that life can bring your way. I love that you guessed both of those things so accurately! Very nice reaction video. Thank you!

Hi Soul, thanks for all the great reviews of Angelina, I started watching her many many years ago. I bought your book and am thoroughly enjoying it, so well written and it carries a very vulnerable and compelling undertone which leads me to believe that this might have been written from experience if it hasn't then I am amazed.
It's a song about her mum, I understand. This is really commercial and it just shows how versatile Angelina really is. The song itself, I loved. It has a great, catchy melody and although it isn't jazz, it is distinctly Angelina. I'm absolutely sold on this girl. A few weeks ago, if you had asked, who is the best singer you have ever heard, I would have said Karen Carpenter, no question. Now, after hearing "Spell on Me" and this and everything else Angelina has done, there's no doubt in my mind that she is steets ahead of even dear Karen. Truly astonishing.
Not that I get much insight on her family dynamics but I thought this might also, in part, be about her grandmother. I thought that 1) her grandmother was the early musical influence and 2) the video was an artistic expression by that same grandmother.

I Think the Cross is a symbol of her mother, this Song was written for her mom. You see her talking to it and lighting a fire, she also is always speaking for the orphan children of the world. I think this is a tribute to them.

Angelina wrote this masterpiece together with a couple a seasoned music makers at a song writer camp in Oslo at age 10 or 11. She said it was inspired by 007-music, which she is very fond of. Video is made by grandma, and she has said the song is about the people that looks after us without being specific :)

@@wippletits Perhaps he should have said she wrote 100% of the Lyrics for Shield, which is fact according to her, i have never told anyone the song was 100% AJ, but her and the Lyrics according to her are, she stated this in the interview on Skavlan herself, she never stated in that interview that she supplied "one line" for the entire song so i would be very interested in a link(s) to the information.
I seem to specifically recall the interviewer asking her if she wrote the lyrics for the song, not contributed to them and she said yes.

Perhaps she didn't want to offer a complete answer at the time but i find the omission kind of serious in any light, her answer however gave a total impression at the time that the credits for the "Lyrics were hers alone".

The 1st time I heard this song, it sounded spiritual. But then someone commented that it was her grandmother she was speaking to. I say it could be whatever the listener hears. It sounds very much like something I could say to God.

I wonder whether the train symbolizes her being transported from adolescence to adulthood. She waves at it but it won't stop because she's too young and needs more nurturing. Being dressed in white shows she's still a child. She keeps the fire ablaze to maintain her symbiotic relationship with her family, her shield. When she eventually reaches adulthood, she will hop on the train and cross the culvert where she will don her flashy outfit and become an independent, well adjusted, young lady. The cross is adorned to look like a person, maybe her Mom or Grandma, whom Angelina adores and dotes over. The cross symbolizes the sacrifices they make to help Angelina fulfill her dreams.

I`ve never seen anyone do a reaction to her "When you`re smiling" :)) It`s a very happy song/video, and shows her more childish side. A real feel good moment.
From my understanding, Angelina had help writing this song but most people agree that she wrote the lyric, "Forgive me for all that I am". Certainly that lyric demonstrates Angelina's awareness that her fame has placed a huge burden on her family and inner circle. Her grandmother was the artistic force behind this video which will likely be studied by many. Bless Angelina, she is truly a remarkable artist and human being.
Andy, i agree with your interpretation of the lyric, "Forgive me for all that I am". The first time I listened to her sing this song I was particularly stunned by those words. It amazes me to this day, after listening to the song probably 50 times, how profound and deep that phrase is. That these lyrics are the work product of a young girl of about age 11 just reinforces what an absolute prodigy she is. She is a once in a lifetime artist and we are blessed to be able to watch and listen to her delivering her gift to the world.

I believe Angelina is focusing on her mother in the song. Angelina has been so focused on her music she is thanking mom for being beside her and letting her do her thing. The song is a tribute to mom to tell her she loves and appreciates everything she has done (and continues to do) for her.

A long time ago, I read about this video created by his grandmother, As a tribute to Norse gods like Odin and Freyja's Valkyries and other Viking protectors of his people. It is a folk tradition according to the Nordic culture. I found it interesting. I was looking for the reference but couldn't find it.

I feel you maybe overthinking AJ's being, she is the perfect combination of nurture and nature. She has clearly had this gift since birth, not only that, she has understood how to share it. Equal to that her talent and generosity have been nurtured by those close to her. I so much hope that her relationship with Republic does not diminish her attributes, rather I hope that Republic mentors her and gives her exposure to touch more lives.
Another thought about AJ, she has said that music was one of her favourite subjects at school. Try and put yourself in the shoes of her music teachers! I would have loved to have seen a choir that Angelina put together at school

From what I have saw and read, Angelina obviously had exceptionally gifted instructors in the after-school program she attended while going to school in Norway. They guided her well.
We also add to the mix that Angelina appears to learn greatly from her own system of learning from comprehending and learning on her own--"self-teaching and self-learning." Another rare gift she has shown us.

There’s a live version of this on a Norwegian TV show that I think is more enjoyable to watch. I believe the soundtrack from that performance was used in this music video, but I’ve always found this video distracting, as it doesn’t seem to relate to the song. The live version is also available on TH-cam. There is one version with an interview prior to the performance where she states she only feels like she is 12 when she looks at her passport.
The soundtrack in this video is the one from her single release recorded maybe a year or two before her live performance on the TV show. If you listen to them one after the other you'll notice the difference

The cross, or is it a scarecrow, definitely a representation of a higher power that she looks as a protector... maybe it is faith represented in such a way as to not make it religious specific (Christian, Muslim, Budahism, etc.) just a belief in a higher power with the strength to guide her and protect her... A realization of her frailties she begs forgiveness and asks she not be left because of it. I could be totally off, as it could be a song to her parents... I don't know, but in the end, the song is highly thought provoking.

Her grandmother is from Iran & world renowed artist. And after visiting Iran, Angelina met a young girl without shoes & her feet were scarred...Angel gave the girl her shoes. And swore she would never would wear shoes on stage until all children had shoes & reason she sings barefoot on stage. She is an activist.
Soul Reacts, this is a great one but, to me, the visuals are a little distracting from the vocals and lyrics of Angelina. You should consider reacting to "Shield" again where she is performing it on stage behind a microphone on a Norwegian TV show, after just being interviewed by the show's host. It is MUCH more amazing, powerful, and effective than this one, in my opinion.

A very different kind of song for Angelina - to get a better feel for the lyrics you should listen to the launch of the song on the Skavlan tv show, here the video can distract from the feel of the lyrics. This video was directed by her Grandma.
The first mention of the idea of a shield that I heard was in an interview of Sara, Angelina's mother at the result of NGT back in 2014. The interviewer asked if Sara would shield her from all the attention that she would be getting- Sara's answer was Absolutely. So generally the impression appears to be that the shield is mother, grandmother and manager uncle Michael.
In the Skavlan interview Angelina said that she wanted the James Bond vibe - her favourites being Diamonds are forever and Goldfinger! (maybe you could react to her live performance of Diamonds are Forever - age 11).

Great reaction, I think you are the right track with your comments . This song the video and the words are completely in line with her Angelic nature and character. Some have said this is a tribute to her mother and her family, however. here is another perspective on this song: With due respect to everyone's opinion of what and who these words of Shield are written about. Some of these words I think could be about her Mother and family, however Angelina has never herself claimed as of yet that they are penned for her family or a tribute to her mother.
I have watched every interview by her and so far she has never claimed they are written solely for her Mother and family. If some one has seen an interview where she makes this claim that I have missed please give the reference , would love to see it. Most people commenting seem to know very little of the spiritual words she has used in this song and they all are very spiritual in nature.
The words to this song are very deep for a young girl to have penned and yet she claims wrote them , they are difficult to put them as tribute to her mother or family if you know anything of spiritual matters. These words line up perfectly with scripture. Some one has has probably posted their opinion that this was a tribute to her mother and others have adopted it as a fact. Either way it is an awesome song for a young girl to have written and arranged. These words are more in line with a prayer, and most people do not pray to their mother or family for help or ask them forgiveness for all that they are.
' Surround me with Angels don't let them go', is not something her family or mother could ever accomplish. At the very end of the video the last visual is a look at the cross standing in the dusk.
I have watched every one of her videos and interviews and never ever once heard her make that claim that these words were about her family and mother, if some one has a link to such a claim by her I will retract . I am pretty sure if she wrote a song about her mother as a tribute it would not have the spiritual meanings this one has and she would in my opinion certainty when asked what is the song about , would not hesitate to claim a tribute to loving mother,
especially when asked on a national TV program which may have been her first national TV debut of this song.
The scripture verses below give the foundation for this song very clearly.

Also the video version of this with her standing alone beside railroad track shows her with the outfit she made with her Grandmothers paintings on it and she begins to run down the tracks holding some flowers in her hand and she has shoes on, however in the next scene we see her coming out from inside a concrete culvert from the other side of the tracks, but this time she is barefoot wearing a white dress similiar to a white robe with a cord tied around it. : the significance of her white robe like dress is explained in the following verses found in the book of Revelations.

As she comes out she stops looks back at where she just came from for a few moments and then turns around and walks up to a cross beside the tracks which is adorned with small tattered flags of all the colors from her outfit in the first scene as well as the flowers now in the center of the cross. She now walks up right in front of the cross raises both arms and then embraces and kisses the cross. Next she is behind the cross seemingly struggling to hold on to it as the wind blows . Then a train come by fast and she jumps up and down waves excitedly to the train as it roars out of sight ( she could be saying in this gesture, hey I made it, you can to). She then kneels down to a small fire and begins messing with it and on the ground there is what looks like money all around the fire.( which could be symbol of the mistake in life of just seeking after money) There is so much spiritual symbolism in this video one could write a book on this video alone with out even contemplating the words to the song.

I think she is a genius hence alll the crazy precocious skill we see. She has been paying attention from so young probably all her life. I mean why would anyone write lyrics FOR her say to forgive for all she is? I doubt anyone would say that but her. I would never say that to a child.
I also think her height may have catapulted her maturity because people might naturally mistake her for being much older than she was at this and at younger ages. And at a handful of adults may not have realized her youth and assumed conversation of a more mature kind made sense. And it likely did. Because AJ. 😂 Hence that only informed her more and more what many kids might have no access to in conversation or in passing, you know as in nontraumatic expression of human experience.
You are my fire sounds like inspiration to me. The song was dedicated to her mother Sara. Which is also profound.
