The ‘mere mortals’ thing is absolutely SPOT ON and I’ve recently had that revelation myself because until recently I’ll admit that I used to do the same and a specific example of ditching that mindset has help me lose 3kg in the last 2 months. I used to think that making healthy smoothies was something only fitness influencers and celebrities did but then I happened to find out that someone I worked with made his own each day. Since then, I’ve been making my own each day too and not only have I lost a large portion of the weight I needed to lose but I also feel amazing too as I’m now eating a more healthier and varied diet. Don’t get me wrong, it’s only part of the overall thing I’m doing as I’m also now running a lot more but it’s definitely made a difference. Thanks Mark for uploading this video as it’s such a great message!

Time to put my hand up. Your channel was ultimately the trigger that got me back on a fitness path. I’m obese. 17.5 stone (currently) at 5foot 10 obese and about to turn 47. But I’ve just dipped under 26 minutes for a 5km and 4 weeks ago ran 52 miles. I won’t ever look like you, I’ve been 5’10” since I was 17!!! 😉. Plus 2 half marathons! I'm now training every day (even getting up at 6am before work to train 🤯). I have fully got the bug now and I'm addicted to running. Even on rest days I have this drive to get out and run. Thank you for providing great content and massive motivation :)

Great video Mark as always. I detest people who self loathe over issues that they can fix themselves. I find you inspirational because you're a normal guy who's put in some effort and not made excuses for yourself. I made excuses for myself not getting into running again after I left school, then I saw how well you'd done for yourself and thought " oh actually, I CAN do it too, maybe I should just get off my arse and put some effort in" and I've done just that. I've learnt a lot from your videos and your messages you put across apply to every normal guy out there. Keep doing what you're doing , don't change a thing !

I'm so glad I found your channel Mark. You're very practical and honest with the way you speak and give advice. I'm now 42 and I'm probably in the best shape of my life because I put in the WORK. I'm shorter but heavy like you so i find distance running especially taxing on my joints but I'm figuring it out and getting faster and faster. I also binge eat quite a bit and that video where you spoke about the fact that some days you may eat 5000 + calories helped set me at ease and not feel as if I'm an insane person.

Mark, you’re bang on. You’re one of the main reasons I took up OCR. Watching your journey showed me that above average is a great place to be. I used to turn up to races and get so depressed that I couldn’t keep with the front runners. Now I turn up, compete against my previous best time, and maybe glance at the overall result. As long as I improve relative to where I used to be, I’m on the right track. I do also aspire to be able to sell a business and retire into full time fitness YouTubing before 50, but that’s just a coincidence.

I agree fully with this view of the world. 1.5 years ago I weighed 103.4kg, decided to turn my life around and started dieting, after a month I started running again. That's how I came across this channel too. Watched your ultra marathon video's and many others. It insipired me to run harder than last time and get some PB's. The decision to keep running was fully mine and wasn't copied or influenced by anyone. Watching other people acomplish great things and push their own limits inspires me to push my own limits. It doesn't mean I wan't to do the same thing. I achieved my goal of 58.8kg after 8 months of dieting. Got a knee injury during a half marathon 8 months ago. Picked up climbing 4 months ago and now I'm in the best shape of my life. I can easily do multiple pullups and other feats of relative strength. Yet I still get inspired by running and other endurance sports even though I can't participate in them. (besides me yesterday watching a video about an ultra marathon and deciding I was going to run a 10k and acidentally breaking my pb to 53m9s oops). The idea of emulating anybody is just rediculous and either limits your view or will leave you dissapointed. Just follow your own path and push yourself to the next level, whatever that level may be.

Yes some people can even complain about that. lol. I had one guy say my potatoe video was boring. I repled to his comment saying I would be sure to include explosions and a car chase in my next upload about cabbage. The best wayy to beat them is with public humour (at their expense) I might yet start my own fitness journey on youtube as a sister chanel.

I watched the video that you're talking about and found it very enjoyable. It was interesting to me to hear someone who is much fitter and active than I am talking about their goals and struggles. It's easy to think, on first look that you just go for it and do it. I am starting from a much lower point, and think I am the only one struggling. Your videos have now been included in my motivation and interests to keep me going on my goals longer term. This year, I entered my last year of my 40s, very over weight, and a smoker. I sat on the beach and thought about the future. I decided that I did not want to go into my fifties a smoker, over weight and now struggling to walk home from the pub. So I gave up smoking, started walking. Here were are in September, I have lost 17kgs in weight and a lot of body fat. I have improved my cardio fitness a lot and I walk a minimum of 5 miles a day at a very decent pace. I am well on track to enter my 50s with an above average level of fitness, I started the year with alerts about my fitness from my Apple Watch! And watching these sorts of things might even get me running for the first time since school. Keep up the entertaining work.

Thank you for talking about this, Mark. Ever since I was a kid, people kept asking me who my idols or heroes were. And I always told them, there's no such thing. Sure, you can look at someone and be inspired by some of the things they do, traits they exhibit, and you might want to do some of those things yourself. Doesn't mean they're some person to put on a pedestal and emulate.

When I was in my early twenties I used to really like the idea of going for a run, did it a few times and each time I would have pain in my knees just like when I was in my late teens post growth spurt. Always kind of wanted to but I was scared to go. Now in my early thirties I've started going again and for some reason there is no knee pain.
Watching your videos is exactly what you talk about here, it is some additional motivation to get up and push myself to be active. I love your channel. The thing I appreciate the most, is that you are not putting yourself on a pedestal. You strive to be a better version of yourself, and nudge others to dare to strive for the same. Better than themselves, and not better than you. :) I think you will do well to realize that some persons are glass-half-full types, and others are glass-half-empty. And some of the glass-half-empty are - no matter how much wisdom you try to pour over them - never ever going to experience their glass being any more than half empty. Move on. Don't let them get to you. Help the ones that can be motivated to help themselves.

i ended up getting 2nd place in my age group with a time of 28:41 minutes…which is not fast. i didn’t think i’d place and for a second i was a bit embarrassed but then i realized that the medal isn’t there to celebrate my ability…it’s there to celebrate the fact that i’m not out here getting black out drunk 3 nights out of the week like the majority of my peers, that i have stuck with my love of running enough to start lifting weights and going to yoga (which i didn’t like, now i do), that i was at a start line at 7 am on a saturday, while my friends are hungover from drinking all night…etc
so ya. i agree medals don’t say anything abt physical ability

Hi Mark, I love your channel for your positive approach and excellent humour, together with your great variety of activities. I think this is the first video of yours I didn't really enjoy and didn't feel it was necessary to make. There will always be haters and I'd prefer you stay with your positive approach and share your journey in the fun way that you always have. Wishing you all the best for your next phase and I'll enjoy watching along and feeling motivated from what you do

That’s ok, no one likes everything someone does 👍🏼. We appreciate adding podcast clips is something different that not everyone will watch - we didn’t even notify subscribers that this video went up so no one was “suggested” it by us. It’s very important to make though as the podcast pays for all the TH-cam videos to be free of sponsors. No podcast, no TH-cam. You could certainly argue none of it needs sharing to the main channel but it’s done to attract people over to the patreon where they can watch while podcast episodes. If we drop a few TH-cam subs but gain a few Patreons that is ok. In fact, that just makes the channel better for everyone.

Angry Mark is just as entertaining as regular Mark. I cannot relate to the comments you receive but I’d like to say you are one of the best TH-camrs in the fitness category. You entertain and motivate with great content. Don’t let the trolls get you down.

I'm not a youtuber, so have zero idea how much work this suggestion would mean, but i would love to see full-lenth videos of all these podcasts on here! They are great and seeing the facial expressions etc rather than just listening in is brilliant. Enjoying the clips massively, but want more :-)

Hi Mark, been watching you for a while but never commented.
I am currently in a situation somewhat similar to yours, albeit at less than half your age. I've come a long way from being fat, not caring about myself at all and now being kind of athletic, probably not even in the top 50%, but still a better physique than I've ever had and I feel better for it, especially psychologically. I still indulge myself and eat whatever I want most times without really punishing myself, because I know I can "afford it" since I have been putting constant effort into my workouts and I can let go for a while as long as I keep my goal in sight.
I completely agree with you about not putting people that have been working harder and/on longer than me on a pedestal. I don't want to be a top 0.1% athlete and I don't idolize those who are. I respect them and am a bit intimidated by them to be honest, but it's just the way I keep myself thinking "there's still more I can do, I can be better".
It's great to finally hear a "fit youtuber" talk about this phenomenon in such a down-to-earth way, I really do appreciate you and every motivational video you've put out in the past, they've helped me a lot in my journey. Thank you.

i fully agree with you in that video Mark, just started watching you and really enjoying the content.
myself and my wife started a weight loss get fit routine hitting the gym etc, she was in agony with arthritis etc for ages and could barely walk a mile to now just finishing her first ever fun run cross county in ireland 6km done and she's lost 20kg, now to get to the point - people keep asking her how we lost the weight what was the secret, when thy are told it involves hard work and eating less they seem disappointed lol
keep up the great work as you seem like a great team together

I hit the "like" button in the first 26 seconds of the video.
Mark: "If I had someone telling me I'm an idiot everyday"
    Jen: "You'd stop doing it"
Mark: "What's it feel like? You tell me?"
God that's brilliant comedy - shows you two actually love each other with such good banter

Hopefully another encouragement for you. Like another comment below, started following you at around a 33/34 min 5k. I just finished my first 10k Spartan and was over the moon. Definitely got the bug. Really appreciate all you're doing and your realistic but helpful motivation. Thank you!
PS. Also, an added bonus for me is that I'm a Brit living in Canada who (I think) grew up not far at all from your neck of the woods, judging by some of your videos. Appreciate seeing some of the places I grew up visiting!

Never really thought about celebrities that way. Not willing to wave from behind a barrier at anyone...that is soo weird but also makes COMPLETE SENSE. They are people just like me or you. It takes a lot of confidence to take that stance though, I wonder wether you were always of this opinion or it came with experience....Anyway, love the video and your channel. You inspire at trying to improve my mediocre YT videos one at a time...

Funnily enough.....I've thought this for years! When I was 14 my brother (2 years younger) was in hospital - Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York at the time) came to visit so they had the sick kids go stand outside to meet her. When my mum and bro told me they stood in a car park for 30 mins to watch some random woman walk past them for 5 secs it occurred to me then - what a load of nonsense 😂

Never read the comments either so apologies if I’m saying things that have been said multiple times…I’m very much an Agatha type and very much appreciate your videos Mark. Park Run has changed my life and your old videos talking about your progress and run/walk lamppost to lamppost technique was hugely motivational to me directly but I’ve also watched some long cycling videos of yours and I feel the same about cycling as you do about swimming. Thank you for your work.
