This is the fourth breed-focused video series from Project DesiHounds.

Regardless of the different states in India, there is one breed that is generally highly sought by all. Not for its size, but for the power, the ferocity and the unconditional loyalty that it comes packed with. Enter the Kombai, or the Theni Kombai, also known as the Indian Boar hound.
On my final leg of Project Tamil Nadu of Project DesiHounds, I visited the titular village of Kombai in Theni District. My host was Mr. Pandiyan and his family, who have been raising this breed for many years now - a tradition carried on from his father, now being handed over to his two grandsons.
Mr. Uma Shankar, his son, broke down to me, a layman, the nuances of this famed breed. He helped me see it, for the absolute work dog that it is - and to help understand that despite being a 'manstopper' breed of dog, it is capable of unconditional loyalty, and that it possesses great discrimination, when it came to children and other pet animals.
The elder Pandiyan and his son are now embarking on an effort to help resurrect the breed, that has been a cornerstone of both his family and his people. As a family, they are venturing on their own revival effort, with which they hope to reestablish the breed to its former glory. And since the results will take some time to show, they are currently unable to offer pups; both for sale and adoption.

I had a Kombai which I got from Saidapet hospital dog breeding unit in '99. The way the caretaker convinced me to opt for Kombai pup was by demonstrating how alert the parent dogs were. The moment he put his first step onto the passage in kennel, Kombai dogs started barking. I had taken a female pup & she grew up to be an awesome dog. They're very versatile, runs super fast like sight hounds, almost zero-maintenance, very alert, fearless & highly intelligent. They definitely have a mind of their own & it definitely takes an experienced dog parent to manage easily. But that's not to say a novice cannot handle. My dog was so loving & used to hug and cuddle whenever I returned home for holidays from my workplace. This breed is one of the best for our climate & typical surroundings. They are not for apartments or small backyards. My dog hardly used to sleep during day time & was very alert & responsive in the night as well. They need lot of space to spend their energy & can stand upto most of the challenges while guarding a farm or large plot. I truly wish TN Government and sincere breeders ensure that Kombai is revived with good gene pool. I'll recommend this breed to anyone willing to look beyond all the foreign breeds

Mr.Pandiyan in the video has cleared many doubts about the breed. I was in a dilemma about whether I can handle the dog as everyone was saying its an aggressive breed. Now I am confident that yes I can.

From what little I know, yes they can, provided they are afforded their own space and provided room for exercise.
As you may have noted from the video, this is a perfect working dog breed that needs a stimulating environment.
A place to exercise their natural instincts.
If these can be furnished, yes they can be. But again the emphasis that they are working dogs.

guys I'm in Malaysia but my native palace is trichy.... this is not story my life of beautiful moments.i was have 1 kombai guy sorry in my family we never call him as a dog...he is name is kunda coz he a bit fat that's why my mom make him name for him that... he is very brilliant. Good fighter also for ever but we miss him coz he already pass away... he stay with almost 15 years.we love him coz when my mom go to my village to near by city... when she back until he wait for my mom in our village bus station..

I would too get a desi dog rather than choosing a foreign breed. giving good food and good shelter will make them a heavy look I think , I used to have a dog like it , we cared him like a baby and he was such good dog.

It's available in Kerala too ...but cross breeds ...all the physical appearance of kombai are purely available in rare cases...my dog 13 year old 90% physical appearance is like kombai... character full kombai.....love him

And thus it needs the space and activities to exercise its instincts; to perform the function that it was bred for.
If you can facilitate such an environment, then they can be housed.

Pariah dogs are also known as Pye-dogs, Indies or INDogs, are one of the oldest landrace of dogs.

Sir, the best means to procure the pups of this breed, is to travel to the village of Kombai.
Express your interest to the villagers with working dogs, and get pups from them.
