  • Brief History of army MTP bivvy bag
The Army Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP) bivvy bag is a key piece of military gear designed to provide soldiers with a lightweight, waterproof shelter in various environments. Here is a brief history of its development:
    Origins and Development
    Introduction of Bivvy Bags:
The concept of a bivouac (bivvy) bag originated in the military as a lightweight, portable shelter for soldiers. Initially, these bags were simple waterproof covers designed to protect sleeping bags from the elements, allowing soldiers to sleep in the open without a tent.
    Development of Camouflage Patterns:
Military forces worldwide have long recognized the importance of camouflage. The British Army, in particular, has used several camouflage patterns over the years to suit different environments. The patterns have evolved from Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM) to the more versatile Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP).
    Adoption of Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP):
In 2010, the British Army adopted the Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP) as part of its Personal Clothing System (PCS). MTP was designed to perform well across a range of environments, from urban settings to woodlands, replacing the previous DPM used since the 1960s. The introduction of MTP was partly influenced by the varied terrains encountered in Afghanistan, where a versatile pattern was essential for effective concealment.
    Integration of MTP into Gear:
Alongside uniforms, MTP was integrated into various pieces of military equipment, including bivvy bags, to ensure consistency in camouflage across a soldier's entire kit. The MTP bivvy bag thus became an integral component of a soldier's loadout, providing stealth and protection.
    Design and Features:
The MTP bivvy bag is typically made from a breathable, waterproof material like GORE-TEX®, which offers protection against rain and wind while allowing moisture from perspiration to escape. It is lightweight and compact, designed to be easily carried by soldiers on the move. Its design is straightforward to use, enabling quick deployment and packing.
    Operational Use and Adaptation:
The MTP bivvy bag has seen widespread use in various military operations, proving its utility in different climates and terrains. Its ability to blend with multiple environments makes it suitable for operations in diverse locations, from deserts to forests.
    Importance and Legacy
The introduction of the MTP bivvy bag marked a significant improvement in soldiers' operational effectiveness by providing better environmental protection and camouflage. It reflects the ongoing evolution of military gear to meet the challenges posed by modern warfare, ensuring that soldiers are equipped with the best possible tools for their missions. As military requirements continue to evolve, the design and functionality of bivvy bags and other equipment are likely to see further advancements.

there's an in service autobiographical book Falklands Commando written by sn Officer in 29 battery (Royal Marines) Royal Artillery, very informative about operating in the terrible climactic conditions etc on the back cover it had a 'subtitle' Green Slugs (bivvy bags) and rat packs, this was a reference to the sight of the Commandos bivvied up on the reverse slope overlooking Stanley on the last night
