My abiding memory of Charlie is of him in mid-conversational stride, without much looking, grabbing a rather lovely 35 year old Aultmore, pouring an overly generous dram into both our glasses, with the words, "you're empty, here man, have another". A true gentleman.

Can a guy who normally likes Highlands Whisky (non-smoky) learn to like Lagavulin 16?

Yep, as MacLean said, it's often the whiskey for those that don't like whiskey. Before trying Lagavulin 16, I detested whiskey. Now I still dislike whiskey save for Lagavulin 16, which is one of my favourite drinks.
