Not me getting goosebumps watching this. Who's cutting onions? •"Samantha Krieger played a deaf girl in 'Miracle on 34th Street'... Richard Attenborough asked for her not to be rehearsed for their scene, so the surprise on her face when he signed to her was her genuine reaction. Samantha is actually deaf and is one of three deaf siblings from deaf parents."
@@yvonnesmith3667… we’ll, yeah? Deafness is a trait most often passed down from parents, I’m pretty sure it’s a submissive trait meaning both parents would need to pass on half the trait for their kids to get it, which would explain why 100% of the family is deaf
This actually happened at a Breakfast With Santa’ event her went to when my children were young. There was a short play put on and Santa arrived at the end of the play. The children would go up to him and sit on his lap afterwards. A girl came to sit on Santa’s lap and began signing excitedly. Santa simply replied in kind, signing just as quickly as the girl, both smiling broadly. My 4 year old looked on in wonder, then looked at me and said, with awe in her voice, “Mom! It’s just like Miracle on 34th Street! He IS the real Santa!” It was a lovely moment and a very special one I remember from 30 years ago. A special treasured moment I will carry with me always
in the original, the girl is a dutch immigrant living with a foster family who onky speaks english. surprise, santa speaks dutch and they sing a dutch christmas song
What a fun fact! I love the interpretation they took here, too. Because he's Santa, both of these situations could and most likely would happen. You could even think that both versions are the same Santa in the same universe and both DID happen, and that's cool, too. 😊
@@jackkazinsky290 i found the original scene, thank you! It’s not bad Dutch at all, despite both actors obviously not being native speakers. The little girl did a great job. Funny thing is she calls Santa Claus is Sinterklaas, the Dutch equivalent to Santa Claus celebrated on a separate holiday from christmas. Maybe back in the day they were considered the same person? Or the filmmakers just didn’t know. The song they sing is real, but it’s a sinterklaas song rather than a christmas song.
The real Saint Nicholas knew Latin and Hungarian... which is its own, unique language. Butchered alot of innocent people for the crime of not attending church... much as Saint Olaf did in Normandy. Also the first recorded male child abuser in the catholic church. On a brighter note, Christopher Cringle was not a saint, but he brought toys to war orphans to celebrate Jesuses Birthday. He wore brown robes, not red, and a lyrapipe hat.. The man was a toymaker, and would leave a small toy in each kids sticking nailed over the fire. Had a sleigh pulled by a mule. Redoing Saint Nicholas, who is accredited for bringing catholicism to Hungary(barbarric methods, but then, the Holy See started as an army, from crusades to inquisitions) Was merged with Christopher Cringle, as the man died before he gained recognition for his work. Noone argues Christopher Cringle would have been the more beloved Saint, but in their time, God was a wrathful deity to be feared and reviled, not the gentle and kind God as he is portrayed now. (If you want to know more fun real figures in history that take on mythic proportions, look up the Cardinals: Lucifer, Michael and Gabriel... the bible only names one angel, 'morningstar', the rest were all real people.😅
There’s a Santa school in which people go through several courses- one of which includes learning sign language related to the role. They also have a class on learning to ho-ho-ho.
I played Santa at a school a while back, and a mom got close to me to tell me I could no longer do the _"Ho-Ho-Ho!!"_ laugh, and still in Santa character I asked "But why? Christmas is for joy and laughter!! Ho! Ho! Hoe!!" I knew why, but she obviously could not explain it in front of her children 😂😅😂
I know someone who went to Santa School! He is the Santa at Mall Of Georgia. Makes great money doing it too! He encouraged me to do it once I got older because of my long hair and beard. He said it’s really rewarding, even though you do get kids occasionally that will be terrified of you, and he said he’s been peed on a time or two 😂
My Aunt is my hero. God rest her soul. And she spent a huge majority of her life deaf because of a childhood illness. She helped raise me and being able to sign with her was the LEAST I could do. And I was honored to be able to so for the time we had her. She is 15 years gone and her large extended family misses her and her lessons every day.
My Grandpa has worked as santa for years ever since he retired, one day before his gig he went to a diner for breakfast dressed up as Santa. His server came over to talk to him, turns out she was half deaf and decided to teach him how to sign “merry Christmas Santa loves you” as this skill could be very useful. A couple hours later at his gig something exactly like like this happens, a deaf boy just wanted to see Santa. He absolutely blew the parents away when he made this kids day by communicating “merry Christmas Santa loves you” this is one of my favorite stories and I am so appreciative to be related to that man.
I hope you make your grandpa a great grandpa so you can have that many more years with him. My grandpa lived to be 89 and that still was too soon in my opinion. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you to cherish him. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and him
I feel like sign language should be a requirement for mall Santas tbh just for this reason. The REAL santa would be able to talk to all children, it keeps the magic alive.
Many years ago, our deaf foster daughter got to see Santa at a mall for the first time. I swear he signed ASL to her just like in this scene. I cried then & I cry now thinking of her joy and excitement. Do they teach ASL in mall Santa school?? IDK, but it was magic to our little girl.
This part always gives me a tear in my eye. It's so awesome. My dad, who is hearing, took classes on sign language for fun and to communicate to deaf if needed. Then one day, in his Christian clowning meet in 1994 they entertained some children. A mother brought her deaf son to see the funny clowns. The mother told my dad the same thing you don't have to talk to him he's deaf he just wanted to see the clowns. So dad started signing to him . The boys face lite up and had a blast talking to dad. Dad had to ask him to slow down for the silly Clown. So this Seen always will have a special meaning to me.
When the mom says “she just wants to see you” and then that precious little girl turns to him with that adorable little face and smile….you just can’t help but smile with her 😊
This is my favourite ‘reaction’ video on the whole interweb! The video itself is beautiful and heartwarming! But the person providing the sign language reaction is even more endearing! Look at her facial expressions! They are so transparent, honest and truly full of warmth and compassion! Thank you so much for this beautiful video!
I just love Santa!!!! I also love Richard Attenborough!!!! He's an amazing actor and a fantastic Santa Claus!!!! Merry Christmas, Santa and Richard!!!! May you both RIP!!!! 💗🙏💜GOD BLESS💜🙏💗
While Richard may not be with us today, the heartwarming portrayal of Santa Claus here is a special kind of immortality in filmdom. And, for those of us who still believe this movie will always bring a tear from remembering all the good times of seasons past!!
i was dating this man who has a social media platform and would do lifestreams at work so sometimes i would casually watch for a few minutes. One day when i was watching, he had an interaction with a deaf customer and began to have a full conversation with him in asl. It was incredibly wholesome and i just remember how warm i felt watching the interaction and how the deaf man clearly enjoyed the effort and inclusivity. We dont talk anymore, but i still admire him for it and always think about it when i see videos like this.
I heard that in Santa training camps the santas learn to sign exactly for those magical moments. If I saw this as a parent I would cry so hard. Tears of joy of course
I've had the honor of taking fast food orders and helping with basic customer service using sign and Spanish. It always delights the customer to be able to use their preferred language and gives me great pleasure as well. 🥰
Congratulations! I loved signing with my little ones- even though my ASL is limited, it was great to be able to communicate with them when they were little.
I have been teaching my 1.5 year old some basic signs since she was ~6 months old, and it took a while for her to pick up but now she can tell me when she’s “all done” eating, or if she wants “more,” among a few others. She also can speak a few words, but she can sign more and it is wonderful being able to communicate with her and figure out what she wants without just going down the list until she stops fussing. Miss Rachel’s videos for babies are a great resource, she watches while I get supper ready on the weekends and she has learned so much! Enjoy your journey in parenthood, it’s an absolute blast.
I taught both my boys baby asl from about 3 months and on. By 4 months, the crying gave way to signs, and I wasn't second-guessing myself trying to figure out what they needed. I highly recommend it!
My husband had to learn ASL but he is getting better at it now since he's a hearing person. I love his comedy and sense of humor. We also speak ASL ourselves. Thank you for sharing your testimony in the comments.
I love how deliberate he is in this scene. Yes, it may be a function of his having learned only the phrases he used, but it also carries a feeling of his making sure that she can understand him and making her feel seen and heard. ❤❤❤
Also the fact that he's wearing gloves may have made signs a little harder to articulate. I choose to believe that's why he's so blocky with his signing in addition to just learning them.
This is my favourite Christmas movie. This part is just so special. Of course Father Christmas would know who to speak to every child on the planet. (I also love Die Hard, but it’s a very different genre!)
This replaces the Dutch Girl from the original movie. I think it's equivalent in the immediate (anymore relevant) impact but lacks the emotional backstory of the Dutch girl.
Every single blummin time without fail that I see her face light up when Santa starts signing, I bawl my eyes out. Sign language should be mandatory in school
The problem is, there isn't the one and only international sign language everyone uses or understands. It would be great if there was, but as far as I know, there are sometimes vastly different dialects within the same language. Deciding what to teach where would probably be near impossible. But I agree, I would've loved to have the opportunity to learn it. I tried getting into a course as an adult, and came to realise how difficult it is to even find one.
@@GrimburI mean, if you taught ASL in North America and ESL in the UK, and so on and so forth, it would be pretty good. We can focus on getting people to be able to communicate with their neighbours and let folks worry about international travel on their own TBH.
@@baddaytrader Not talking about travel. I'm not very well informed so I might be wrong but it's my understanding that at least in Germany, there's no unified, national sign language, but more like lots of regional dialects, much like regular spoken language. I might be wrong and I'm happy to stand corrected of it's the case.
I read that the reaction of little girl was genuine as she didn’t expect Richard Attenborough to know sign language. My favorite remake. Happy Holidays!
Miracle on 34th street is probably my favorite Christmas movie. The Santa in that movie is so sweet, best representation of Santa Claus by far in my opinion
I was just thinking about this. I haven't seen the movie in sooo long, I barely remember anything about it. I just remember that for a long time as a kid, if anyone asked me what my favorite Christmas movie was, I would say Miracle on 34th St. I got go back and watch it again!
My daughter became interested in sign language since it's incorporated in Swedish schools. We know the alphabet, most clothes, and we can say short sentences like "I want halloween candy". I work as a teacher as well and it's a great skill to have.
I live in norway and it's similar!! My boyfriend deaf, but had dome medical work done that improved his hearing a few years back, but I took the sign languages classes very seriously for him and its the best thing ever ❤
@SouthernCoastal for my school it was mostly SSL/NSL(Swedish/Norwegian sign language) but I also learned ASL because my bf's American, specifically a no sabo kid who was raised in a primarily white and hearing family, lol
As the only person where I work who signs it off a very frustrating that most of the staff don’t or can’t be bothered to learn just a few words to work with our 3 deaf ladies. The day I started my boss introduced me to one and her Whole Face Lite Up when I started signing! I almost cried. I was Very out of practice but we made it through and 3 1/2 yrs later I am still better t great but she still smiles when she sees me and me her. We aren’t supposed to have favorites but she admit I have one. This is beautiful to see happening more often in more places besides just movies and tv shows. Thanks for sharing this! 🤟🏻
Always makes me cry. . I am hearing, but I can sign and have taught my daughters who are hearing and they continue to learn more signs and help customers who cannot hear. What a blessing.
This is one of my favourite scenes in this movie. I love the added detail of him repositioning her on his lap so that she's fully facing him so she can properly see his signing. Especially since the tone of signing is so reliant on facial expression.
Thats because the little girl IS actually deaf and you tend to find that they DON'T speak along with thier FAST signing. Where as mr Richard Attenbourgh learnt how to sigh enough to do this scene.
@yvonnesmith3667 I know but I also think they may have encouraged it as well so that younger people might be able to memorize a few common greetings in ASL.
I had a job a few years ago that I worked alongside deaf people. One sweet woman had a minor mental episode (broke down, crying her eyes out) and was gone for a couple days. I figured out how to sign, "Happy (to) see you!" for when she came back. I got a great big smile & hug for that!! Kindness doesn't take that much extra effort! This world needs it! Desperately needs it!!
Im man enough to admit this scene always gets me every time I watch it. Communication is the essence of every relationship and its beautiful when that barrier is broken
I am blessed with good hearing, but this clip is always so special to me because of the kindness and love of the human spirit. You know how to make an old man cry.
Seeing how much this scene clearly means to you, the emotion in your eyes, made me start crying. This is really something special isn't it? I never realized how much something as simple as being able to communicate can mean
i had someone try to help me like this at a restaurant once they found out i was deaf, but didn't know i was from england. the effort was still so sweet
I think this was a fantastic scene to be included in the movie. I think many a young deaf child felt a sense of inclusion seeing this. Adding that little magic to Santa we all who believed in him had until we grew out of it.
The reaction of the interpreter when Santa start to sign is gold. She seen so surprise the character know how to sign. She look like she has tear of (thankfulness?) in her eyes for this inclusion.
For those who aren’t aware . That was a genuine reaction from the little girl. They didn’t tell her Santa knew sign language and she was also deaf in real life
I'm hearing, and this was always one of my favorite parts of the movie - especially after I learned to sign a bit & realized that the actor had actually learned enough to sign for this scene.
Is IS sweet, but also kind of sad. I say this because I worked as a mall Santa, and it was a time of my life I will never forget. Unfortunately, i don't know ASL or speak any non-English languages fluently. Had that been a requirement. I would never have been able to share in that wonderful experience. I would never want to deny someone that opportunity.
Depending on location, Santas may also learn a little Spanish, French, German, and/or Mandarin Chinese. Whatever the most likely secondary language of the area is.
My children learned to sign christmas songs this x-mas. Their primary school is an inclusive school, so all of the children learn to sign. They invited the parents to carrol singing around a fire pit with a group of kids playing instruments and also had their best signers stand on a little podest signing and singing along to the song. The majority of children learning at this school are not deaf, both of my children don't have a deaf child in their classes (each class has 2-3 children with a disablity). My younger child really likes to learn sign language.
It's a wonderful example of when we are able to communicate, we can all get along much better. ❤🥰 Patients is a gift, and a smile in any language means the same thing.
@baddaytrader thank you so much. I've always struggled with reading and spelling. Spell check is wonderful, but it does not correct an improperly used word that is spelled correctly. Words matter, and editors are helpful. Happy New Year. 🙂👍🏼
My daughter is hearing and only knows a few signs, but she was shy with Santa this year and used sun language to talk to him and he was totally fluent. Wonderful experience.
I took Speech Pathology in college. I was a stock clerk at a grocery store. The American Sign Language course helped me to assist customers in the store. Most were so grateful I knew sign. They would ask if I was deaf or a member of my family was deaf. I would say "no".... that really shocked them. I'm in my 60's now. I can still finger spell if I can't remember the sign. Everyone should learn how to finger spell and practice it on a regular basis. You never know when you are going to need it. My college girl friend also learned it. We could talk to each other at the movie theater and now bother other people. This is a great movie. Very very inspiring.

Deffinatly a genetic thing i would say then😂

You're 😢
@@yvonnesmith3667… we’ll, yeah? Deafness is a trait most often passed down from parents, I’m pretty sure it’s a submissive trait meaning both parents would need to pass on half the trait for their kids to get it, which would explain why 100% of the family is deaf

This is so god-damn wholesome i started tearing up. I don't tear up to tv shows or movies.
I have to admit, this big tough man cry’s at this every time ❤️

This actually happened at a Breakfast With Santa’ event her went to when my children were young. There was a short play put on and Santa arrived at the end of the play. The children would go up to him and sit on his lap afterwards. A girl came to sit on Santa’s lap and began signing excitedly. Santa simply replied in kind, signing just as quickly as the girl, both smiling broadly. My 4 year old looked on in wonder, then looked at me and said, with awe in her voice, “Mom! It’s just like Miracle on 34th Street! He IS the real Santa!”
It was a lovely moment and a very special one I remember from 30 years ago. A special treasured moment I will carry with me always
Well I’m crying into my coffee 😭 The innocence of youth will bring me to tears every time 🥰 Happy Holidays and thank you for sharing that 🎄

in the original, the girl is a dutch immigrant living with a foster family who onky speaks english. surprise, santa speaks dutch and they sing a dutch christmas song
What a fun fact! I love the interpretation they took here, too. Because he's Santa, both of these situations could and most likely would happen. You could even think that both versions are the same Santa in the same universe and both DID happen, and that's cool, too. 😊
What is the original?
@@nienkeh301 this movie is a remake, original is the same name, miracle on 34th street, made in the 40s
@@nienkeh301Santa clause komt van Sinterklaas!
That's because the real Santa knows EVERY language ❤️💚
(If you want to know more fun real figures in history that take on mythic proportions, look up the Cardinals: Lucifer, Michael and Gabriel... the bible only names one angel, 'morningstar', the rest were all real people.😅
Christmas and Santa Claus are pure Paganism. Trinity is comcept of Hinduism. December 25 is the birth of Sun god Mithra according to Greek.
There’s a Santa school in which people go through several courses- one of which includes learning sign language related to the role. They also have a class on learning to ho-ho-ho.
Omg I never knew that😮
I played Santa at a school a while back, and a mom got close to me to tell me I could no longer do the _"Ho-Ho-Ho!!"_ laugh, and still in Santa character I asked "But why? Christmas is for joy and laughter!! Ho! Ho! Hoe!!"
I knew why, but she obviously could not explain it in front of her children 😂😅😂
I know someone who went to Santa School! He is the Santa at Mall Of Georgia. Makes great money doing it too! He encouraged me to do it once I got older because of my long hair and beard. He said it’s really rewarding, even though you do get kids occasionally that will be terrified of you, and he said he’s been peed on a time or two 😂
Hohoho 😅
@@alejandropacheco7832Why not?
I'm blubbering like a baby from the scene and then you add this!!❤❤❤❤
Wow. Again with the onions😮😅😊
I’m gonna cryyy!!!!!! That’s so heartwarming!
I hope you make your grandpa a great grandpa so you can have that many more years with him. My grandpa lived to be 89 and that still was too soon in my opinion. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you to cherish him. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and him
Of course, an actor playing Santa will go beyond what is required of him!! He's playing SANTA!!!
He’s no actor
“Spared no expense!”
That actor is also a famous film producer, a British Knight, like his brother: Sir David Attenborough.
@angrytedtalks I was unaware. Thank you
I feel like sign language should be a requirement for mall Santas tbh just for this reason.
Many Santa schools teach these things.
I think in the legend of Santa he can cannonically speak all languages and sign language is still a language.
He was the real Santa. 😭😭😭
A lot of Santa's actually take ASL classes prior to the Christmas season to brush up on it for deaf kids.
@ This makes my heart happy?
🎅🤟❤️
Love this scene. Makes me cry every time.
me too happy tears❤❤
I understand it's hard but giving the deaf a way to talk is important every one deserves to be heard.
What a beautiful story! Thanks for sharing such a great personal experience with your father! 😢
I'm so proud n happy for your dad doing this. What a great hearted dad ❣️
Your dad is a special person, God bless him.
You're dad sounds like an amazing man, God bless him and bless your family thanks for your beautiful story and hope you have many more memories
I LOVE how he first repositions her on his lap so they can talk properly. 10/10 🥰

This made me cry. What a beautiful scene. 🥰
Ditto
Me three... I'm not even sure why, but it's a beautiful scene (as you mentioned)
This is how you include those who feel excluded. Not by sending a fake message for clout. This is beautiful.
I've had the honor of taking fast food orders and helping with basic customer service using sign and Spanish. It always delights the customer to be able to use their preferred language and gives me great pleasure as well. 🥰
I love ASL. I'm gonna teach it to my newborn daughter when she comes soon. Thank you Krissy.
Congratulations! I loved signing with my little ones- even though my ASL is limited, it was great to be able to communicate with them when they were little.
Congrats! ASL is very useful so I'm glad she'll get to experience it!
(I also love Die Hard, but it’s a very different genre!)
...and a very different kind of special 😛
What movie is it? It looks so wholesome!

The actor actually learned to sign and didn't let anyone tell the actress. That little girl's surprise is genuine
I never saw this movie but. This scene made me cry. Thank God he knew sign language. This scene was so sweet.
Jesus her eyes brighten up so much!
Every single blummin time without fail that I see her face light up when Santa starts signing, I bawl my eyes out. Sign language should be mandatory in school
Learning the alphabet in ASL used to be.
I think it'd be good for the aging population too...
I miss the days of innocence and pure happiness... Nothing feels like this in 2024...
Mankind lost its innocent long before 2024,when humans started to obsess about technology.😞

The smiles and genuine joy on this, from both the scene and you, are so heartwarming.

I just bought both of them on Amazon after watching this clip and reading the comments.
Which sign language?
Ooh! I've been learning Swedish and would love to learn some Swedish sign language - I've got to look into this!

The joy on the little girl’s face is equally heartwarming as the joy on Chrissy’s face watching it.
This is one of my favourite scenes in this movie. I love the added detail of him repositioning her on his lap so that she's fully facing him so she can properly see his signing. Especially since the tone of signing is so reliant on facial expression.
I love the low key disdain his face shows for the mom who doesn't think that her deaf child should have Santa even try to communicate with her.
I'm _Santa_ b-tch!
Watch this!
Sir Richard did wonderful here! Thus what we need to teach young children everywhere! Beautiful
He was actually a knight AND a Lord. He was given a lifetime peerage and could style himself as Baron Attenborough if he so chose.
Okay, Chrissy, your smile is incredible! The joy you reveal is so real. Thank you!
I cried at this scene cause it's so beautiful
I like that when Santa is signing he's doing so slowly and following along out loud.
Of course, Santa can speak every language 😂❤
REPRESENTATION. Watching your, reaction to this was so touching. Being validated is the best and seing someone else being validated feels good too.
So much love for the Santas that take the time to learn and practice sign language irl so they can do this for kids.❤️

Our Santas inthe malls here are required to know basic ASL. I think it's sweet.

The unforgettable and brilliant Richard Attenborough!
