My late grandfather Pim Koopman on drums, wish I had been old enough to appreciate his talent and music and learn from him when he was still around. Thanks to youtube I can at least appreciate his music now that I am older. RIP big man
I like this reaction, i try to imagine the feeling to discover your grandfather (or father) here on TH-cam. No chance to find my old men here, i am from '67 so aged 13 when this was in the "hitparade". Just discovering pop music and buying my first 45 singles.
Outstanding story, thanks for sharing! I'm a two bit bass player. Always loved the Rhythm section in this song. I think I'll have to try to work this thing up with my guys to honor your late grandfather my friend!
Echt? Ben muzikaal in de 70's en 80's opgegroeid en dit is altijd een favoriet van me gebleven. Klinkt idd ERG Amerikaans wat ik juist daarom zo mooi vind. Uitspraak en sound zijn geweldig. 🤩👍
Great song! What's notable about this video is the location of the drummer, the angle much of the video is shot that includes the drummer, and the three or four good close-ups of the drummer. Most music videos tend to give little camera time to the drummer, which in my opinion is one of the more interesting band members to watch. Drummers don't get enough camera love, but this one did!
I used to love this song wen it came out. I had forgotten about wen i stopped at a gas station and heard it over 30 yrs later. Ill never forget about it now. I have it on 6 different playlist. Great song 4ever!!!
I well remember Oct. 1980 & my little apartment in Tampa. And THIS GREAT Diesel song was brand new. Now that's 41 yrs ago!? I guarantee U, they didn't play songs from 1940 back in 1980, that hold up as well as this song does 41 yrs later! : )
What I like about bands like this, even for the early 1980's, the drummer just has a basic drum kit and it works just fine. Same with bands from the 1960's and 1970's. If you have talent you don't need such a large drum kit.
Sad that for shows like top of the pops etc. the bands always had to shorten their songs. Half of the intro and the solos is missing. Was the same with GNR Sweet child of mine…
Wow huge rush of nostalgia. Great memories while life was still innocent. A blind date in a vintage car hearing this song felt like we were forever young.
Dude I tried for years to figure out who this was. I knew part of the lyrics, called radio stations back in the day everyone told me no clue buddy. I actually thought it was Joe Walsh. But thank you for posting and ending my search. And letting me know it wasn't some phantom song I'd dreamed up lol 😎👍
"I'd rather have songs like this run through my head all day than anything that comes out these days, and those annoying music from the tv commercials especially great songs they exploit in their ads just to sell pharmaceutical products,uh sorry to ramble.".
Top of the Pops was famous for its lip-syncing and “instrumentals” that made Elvis Presley movie songs look real. 😂😂 But these guys did a pretty amazing job with it. Great song!
DUDE❗️❗️ Just discovered this SUPER C🅾️🅾️L track on #SIRIUSXM on a 80’s SUMMER chanel with MTV’s MARK GOODMAN. #DIESEL #TOTALLYRAD #SAUSALITO #EIGHTIES #80s
One hit wonder in the USA and Canada, I suppose, but in their native Netherlands this was their third hit. Their first hit in their home country was "Going back to China" : th-cam.com/video/9yaNKJD5RiM/w-d-xo.html Greetings from Belgium
Many 'one hit wonders' exist because people were lazy and only listened to what was played on the radio and/or what was released as a single. God forbid they actually buy the album and see what else is on it.
I always thought it was funny, a Dutch band singing about spending the summer in California. Did a nice job, though. If you didn't know any better, you'd think these guys came from the US. Music is like that. I put out a TH-cam channel that covers early jazz in Europe and there was a lot that cross-pollination going on with what is essentially an American art form crossing over like that.
It is because it doesn't matter it is all Staged Lip Syncing in that era, Notice the Instruments have no cords attached. This was done for a few reasons, Mainly people were familiar with the Radio versions of the songs, and a Live recording might not sound the same shows like TOP were all about promoting the single. It was done for consistency.
@mark maietta Sorry man it is hokie good but hokie.Great musicians though especially the guitar player, don't know if he's still alive but that is some killer stuff! Very complex! You don't have to call someone an idiot for having a little different opinion than your own I think that was a little rude and over-the-top!
....are we sure this isn't The Mosquitos from their episode on Gilligan's Island?....i mean, maybe they are specialists producing electric guitar sounds/music without the aid of electricity?......
Hoping we wouldn't notice. Probably explains the low light and lack of spots on the Mark Boon the whole time or the electrical engineer for this place was way overpaid and didn't know how to program the set up.
So Was they a Dutch music band? This song is eternal, but this explain a lot of things, because Sausalito never was a cool place for young people, honestly. Sausalito is for calm, old families, I think
My late grandfather Pim Koopman on drums, wish I had been old enough to appreciate his talent and music and learn from him when he was still around. Thanks to youtube I can at least appreciate his music now that I am older. RIP big man
The drummer is tight! Love this song.
Nice. RIP to him.

One of my favourite drum tracks ever. Your grandfather was a legend!

Loved this then, still slaps 43 years later...❤
Yes, the first time I heard this, I loved it! Still do!
When I listen to this CLASSIC for the thousand time my neighbors love it so much they throw bricks through my windows so they can hear it better…..🤘🏼
😂😂😂✌️
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of the most americain sounding songs ever. I think that the most people don't know it's a dutch band.
Nowadays, maybe. Back then everyone knew they were Dutch. Because shows like TopPop existed and we all stayed home to watch it.
Echt? Ben muzikaal in de 70's en 80's opgegroeid en dit is altijd een favoriet van me gebleven. Klinkt idd ERG Amerikaans wat ik juist daarom zo mooi vind. Uitspraak en sound zijn geweldig. 🤩👍
I remember them saying that it was a great international song but the one place it didnt hit well was ironically Sausalito! 😂

Wow never knew they were dutch , I thought they were from California, was there a Van Halen cousin in the band ?
Great song! What's notable about this video is the location of the drummer, the angle much of the video is shot that includes the drummer, and the three or four good close-ups of the drummer. Peaked at #25 Billboard this week in November 1981, 40 years ago. Excellent ear candy!
This is the kind of tune that goes over and over in your mind all day....in a good way.!!
This song brings back memories of a simpler more innocent time. I love it.
I bought this on vinyl over 40 years ago. I still have it. I bought it on cassette. I still have it. I finally found it on cd.
Wow! Great!
This album is a gaping hole in my vinyl collection!
We blew a gasket on the Grapevine and $80 on repairs, love those lyrics.
My favorite is "another mile or two to Frisco, 200 gallons from LA, the engine's thumping like a disco, we oughtta dump her in the bay " 😂
Damn... the best rock tunes of 1980--one of my favorites. The main riff is so damned cool, and the guitar solo is really...greasy!
I used to play them on the radio in the 80s . Good song for ever!.
I am 64 and I jam on my porch.
Probablyyyyy.... my fave song by a Dutch band about road-trippin' in the U.S. :) :)
Dude, i have 35 years old and enjoy everytime this masterpiece
This band talented group of singers/song writers/players should have been bigger.
These guys could really compose.
Dutch band, Diesel rocks
Dutch band,Shell Diesel ⛽😂

Love this song, my late husband and I listened to this song every time it played on the radio. Now it is on TH-cam.
I used to love this song wen it came out. I had forgotten about wen i stopped at a gas station and heard it over 30 yrs later. Ill never forget about it now. I have it on 6 different playlist. Great song 4ever!!!

Nice comparison and damn right.
And they sure didnt play 1900s music in 1940! We are the lucky ones
Haven't heard this song in ages! High school drill team used to dance to this
same here !! Cheers

Exactly!
'The larger the exhaust, the smaller your thing'
Pop Rock at it's best. Perfect.👏
Johan Cruyff and Diesel….. Dutch legends!!
Still a great song about a very common occurrence
Still great in 2024.
This riff is so catchy and difficult at the same time! To make it sounds clearly as it deserves you got to have skills!
Fantastic song from my youth
Classic song by a classic band.
Great riff. Unique time signature.
This comment is old but it’s normal 4/4, why you would think this is a unique time signature makes me want to smash my head in with a baseball bat
@@seanwagoner4160 Give him a break, the accents are on the offbeat so he thought it was...odd.
Sophomore year .. to this day remember the first time I heard this hanging out with some friends in the basement ... good times
i was in sausalito when this came out, on a trip with my friend and her parents. it was the best song ever
Go class of 1981
One of my favorite songs of all times.
Okay, haven't thought about this one in about 80 years. Wow.
Thank you Spotify ya little tease for slipping this banger in my playlist. Made my day
Trucking out west jamming to this classic!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
the drummer was givin' it ! catchy track
uffff what beautiful memories of 1980 when I was just a child
Sad that for shows like top of the pops etc. the bands always had to shorten their songs. Half of the intro and the solos is missing. Was the same with GNR Sweet child of mine…

I loved this song growing up?
Can't get enough of this summervibe.......
Classic song by a classic band. ❤
Sounds just like the studio verson..........
Steve Miller is crossing my mind.
He was one of their main influences.

И тут НАШИ отличились)))классный музон,кстати профессионально играют...мне понравилось,как сейчас модно говорить:ЗАШЛО!!!
Hilarious lyrics! Yeah, when your engine thumps like a disco it's time to flush it! Never heard this before and I'm 68!
Wonder how many kids nowadays would get the reference to "your Rambler". AMC (which took over Rambler) ain't been around since forever.
Definitely on my feel good list
Aus meinem damaligen jungen Leben eine schöne Erinnerung 👍👍
No 1 in lots off US states , no 33 in Holland !! where they came from ;)
Number 1 in Canada, also!!!!!
Interesting a Dutch band has a hit song singing about traveling to an American city.
Great harmony vocals
that one is the best.
Sounds like Steve Miller Band.
this particular song reminds me a little bit of frank zappa stuffs, anyway, great song!
Minus them cutting out a few very little parts in this song in this video, still pretty good.
So these guys and Edward and Alex Van Halen are from the same place? Interesting 😊
Excelente tema
Classic Rock a grandi livelli, intramontabile

Thought this was Chilliwack!!🌞🌞 Wow. Time capsule 🎤🎤🎤toke up feel this one hit. Wonder
.....it and "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)" were released at almost the same time then.....
I hated when record companies started cutting parts out of songs to make them more "commercial friendly."

It's surprising how much they edited out to make the song shorter for TopPop.
Sounds Like a track from the GTA Radio Stations 🎵
YES, i was just thinking that, i play on pc, so you can add songs to the radio, i might ad this to my existing playlist.
👏👏👏👏👏
Great to see this video but I can barely hear it.
This one sounds better. th-cam.com/video/KbVU4ogV66E/w-d-xo.html
I bv think it was a little to much for alot of radio play. I was 19 at the time and even my mom loved this song.
OMG!! The lead singer is soooo hot!
Silly point but it bugs me how low the mike is for the lead vocalist - it's like TOTP couldn't be bothered to adjust it.
