    I mean, given how hard it is to get diagnosed with anything as a woman, I feel like this might as well still be around. When I was sixteen I lost twenty pounds and couldn't eat properly for over a year before I was finally diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. Like, a solid fourteen months of tests with no answers. I'm pretty sure I was given like fifteen pregnancy tests over that year, in spite of my repeated insistence that I wasn't sexually active.

      It took me 20 *YEARS* to get diagnosed with endometriosis. I always knew something was wrong. But, everyone I talked to - friends, family, doctors - either ignored me, told me it was no big deal, or just told me to suck it up and deal with it. I finally got diagnosed after it had progressed to the point that it nearly landed me in the hospital. I told the doctor - a woman - about how my concerns had been ignored and shrugged off for years. She was absolutely horrified. She held my hand, looked me right in the eye, and said, "I am so, so sorry. No one should ever have to go through that." Not only did she apologize on behalf of the entire medical community, but I swear I thought she was going to start crying.

      They’re ppl who are educated in school like all of us. Society just placed a heavy burden on them. Given some to forget that a lot of their advice is recommended not necessary. A PHD doesn’t mean you know everything. Think of the experiences that shape their perspective. Then they apply those to their career. If the intentions are cruel the patients are in trouble. Doctors in low income clinics are an example of this. I work in health care I see it way too often

    Hysteria wasn't only used to describe why women were too emotional, or to explain a sickness they couldn't understand. It was used as justification for the denial of their rights, their education, and their agency. It had far more to do with finding biological justification for women's suppression that it did in finding explanations for sickness.

  • @meganofsherwood3665

    I do find myself wondering if "hysteria" started out as a way to describe Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, when the surge of hormones right before a woman's period starts can cause a marked increase in any underlying anxiety or depression. Premenstrual Syndrome can also cause or contribute to migraines and mood swings, and I wonder if they were seeing the correlation between symptoms and what the uterus was doing...and then abused the observation. "Wandering Uterus" makes me think of endometriosis, too

  • @Goblin_Mom
    @Goblin_Mom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +105

    it's ahistorical to make an educational video about hysteria without mentioning that in addition to medical problems doctors couldn't figure out, it was also applied to other situations, like when women behaved in a way that men didn't like, (e.g. not wanting to get married, not allowing her husband/male relatives to boss her around, not wanting sex, wanting to much sex etc.) and that the things doctors "couldn't figure out" included pretty much anything related to menstruation, because they wouldn't, and still don't, put the effort into understanding it properly. and that with Freud, despite him trying to say it's not a gendered thing, the implications of his ideas often included assuming that said problems that couldn't be figured out, especially with women (again, included menstrual pain and "improper" behaviour) were a result of mental illness and weren't real. we still see the effects of this when women's pain is very often underestimated compared to men by physicians, but that's another issue entirely;
    tl;dr: it's irresponsible and ahistorical for an "educational" youtube channel to talk about hysteria and not talk about its use as a tool to try to force women into line; it contributes to the idea that medical science has always just been a bunch of well-meaning people trying to figure out how best to help everyone without the ability to learn everything they need, rather than a part of society with the same biases and bigotry as society at large.

    • @Goblin_Mom
      @Goblin_Mom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Toneill029 they chose to gloss over the more challenging aspects of the topic they chose to cover. they could have fit it in, they just chose not to. they mentioned plenty of things that were less important to understanding the full context of the concept of hysteria as a medical diagnosis than its use to medically justify gender based oppression.

    One time, when I was like 10 years old, I GMed a D&D campaign for a friend who’s house I stayed at after school. In the campaign, he had a dog that suddenly started to get smarter and smarter, to the point the dog could talk, and eventually, communicate telepathically.
    It turned out, the old wizard who worked at the wizard hat shop explained to my friend’s fighter, that his dogs brain was turning upside down in its head, and that was why the dog turned smart and telepathic. But, once it made a full 360, it would go back to normal. ☹️
    Also there was an npc that polymorphed into a triceratops and saved my player friend from dangerous situations all the time. Like when he was surrounded by A WHOLE BAD GUY ARMY!
    Anyway, I based all my pregame research on wondering womb syndrome. That’s good science right there.

    Hey. Something I took a class on!
    This whole issue is why the term "hysterical" usually is connotative of women. Which is extremely sexist! This is also why a lot of early 1900s novels and films had women in insane asylums. Some of them argued that women were put there unfairly, others were a lot more "traditional" and made suggestions about lack of sex. It's really awful.
    The history of mental illness is really interesting! If you're interested in learning more, I suggest you read: "Anxiety: A Short History," this book is really REALLY anti DSM and DSM-V, so keep that bias in mind, but they do lay out their argument, and it doesn't "hurt" the book in anyway. it's really fascinating.

    The uterus "wandering" around your body and causing pain and medical problems is not that far fetched an idea especially for thousands of years ago considering the very real issue of endometriosis where the endometrium(lining of your uterus) can travel and form outside your womb (endometriosis has been found in every organ and anatomical structure in the body except the spleen) this tissue , wherever it is on the body is triggered to then shed and bleed like the rest of the endometrium every month causing extreme pain and problems for some women. jus sayin

      Ok, so it's 8AM in Japan right now, but it's 7PM on the East coast of America. Now say I fly overseas, my sleep schedule will obviously be messed up. Let's say I fly to America, I'm going to fly right after I've slept the night, so I'm going to be awake on the flight, but when I get to America, it will be morning already. So my body will think it's night time now, but it's actually morning where I really am, so I have to stay awake. And even if I sleep through the day, I just delay the problem for tomorrow, because then I'm going to want to be awake through the night again. It takes a while for your body to get used to big time changes.

      UnitZER0 I've been diagnosed with BPD. Do you mean the causes or symptoms?
      Causes are typically environmental factors like abuse and trauma as well as genetic factors linked to depression.
      The best way I can explain it to people is by equating it to have depression, anxiety, rapid bipolar, dissociation, and ptsd, as well as behavioral issues in an attempt to adapt and not be hurt.

    I thought hysteria was like when a bunch of people can't stop laughing or dancing. Some even say the salem witch trials was mass hysteria

    • @krashd
      @krashd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hysteria generally means to be "worked up" so stressed, anxious, panicked, angered, it can be various things but the common denominator is that people who are hysterical have diminished judgement, they can be irrational, illogical, even frenzied.
      That's what makes it a sort of umbrella term where simply saying "worked up" fits best. People who get worked up in groups can form lynch mobs- as folk saw at the Salem trials, people who get worked up alone can have panic attacks or even nervous breakdowns if stress gets on top of them. In the context of the video they were using hysteria to describe sexual frustration in people who were ignoring their natural urges to do ..er.. well what teens do when they are alone. Pretty much.
      In those days the church would tell folk that it is a sin to touch yourself and since men orgasm much easier than women during sex it meant some wives had no release at all, forever, so eventually in their late 30's or so they would start going slowly mad with sexual urges. Religion once again trying to decide what is or isn't natural and once again causing tremendous damage in the process.
      We Brits have a saying (or we should) and it's "If life get too much, just have a wank"

    Ive had PCOS for 10 years and only found out last year in november after the constant nausea, pain, fainting spells, etc became too much and they agreed to to an intravaginal ultrasound. They offered me no treatment and said "take ibuprofren" like I haven't been doing that already. I CAN'T lose weight as I'm 89lb, I can't be put on diabetic meds bc I'm not diabetic and the side effects, I can't be put on HRT because of the side effects, and a bilateral oophorectomy would send me into menopause, needing HRT to lessen it. Pretty much ALL of these options suck, and so does the constant pain from PCOS. It all sucks! Medical tools and practices without anesthesia for women haven't changed for centuries. Women are completely neglected medically, and it shows with even just the lack of studies on treatments and the constant lack of giving us information about our bodies.
