Ah memories! I remember as a 14 year old at school walking past the tuck shop and just started going up the stairs when I first heard this song blasting out from the tuck shop! Stopped me in my tracks and blew my mind lol Amazing how a song can take you back and resonate with you decades later!
First time I heard this was with my AC/DC loving mates at the Wednesday School Disco at Priestlands School ...it came over the system so fucking loud and powerful and I thought it was Ace but just stared at the guys doing “ the Mod Dance “ with my mouth shut , like the Hairy Fairy I Genesis fan i was ....The Solent Runners “ we’re terrifying too. 🏴😇😎regards from Wessex
Who would have thought that after all this time the lyrics of so many of our teenage anthems would be more poignant and prophetic that they were the first time round?
Do you REALLY want an answer to that??? You're going to get it anyway. The NEW Generation Z iz all hip hop rap = a bit LIKE Thick! Yeah. Who would of thought it? "It's the kidney machines that cost for Rockets and Guns" Of course, we are all just old farts without a clue. My advice; put your slippers on, Don't turn on the tv and make a nice cup of tea. Let em get on with it.
Simply brilliant. Weller was an old-fashioned English socialist who loved his country and hated what politicians were doing to it in the late 70s and early 80s. That's where the energy comes from. These days Weller would be considered parochial because his concern was for his own country while now people fight globalization. But the enemy is the same now as then - neo-liberal laissez-faire economics, the destroyer of all countries' uniqueness and individuality.
I'm strictly a classical music lover, but man, The Jam just couldn't be ignored when I was a kid; all pop music was a vexing blur until any one of The Jam's songs came on the radio, and it would force my ears to prick up. Weird how this particular song seems more relevant today than it did on release.
The lyrics to this (and other Jam tracks) are just incredible. You forget how young they were in their hey day. Grew up with them and every track resonates. Wonderful.
Best part for me is from 2.18 onwards... it's as revelant today as when it was first released and I'm a 65 yr women who still loves the jam/Paul Weller....
All this Jam from 3 lads......2nd most underrated band of all time just behind XTC. I wore this song out when I were a young "Yat" from New Orleans. Their music grabbed me by the balls and my music choice was never the same.
True dat. Interesting as a child on the school bus we heard these songs on the radio...as they were in the hit parade...they hardly ever played them after. XTC and the Jam were something else...but the BBC played them very little...as they were not commercial but anti establishment. Also the Ruts and the Specials hit similar chords of the zeitgeist
And I'm so happy and you're so kind You want more money, of course I don't mind To buy nuclear textbooks for atomic crimes And the public gets what the public wants But I want nothing this society's got Going Underground...
bus driver was playing it loudly on the bus (against rules) and i'd never heard this song but i could deduce what song it was (weller's voice, lyrics) and i was like, this could have been written today about today it's so accurate
"Some people might say my lifes in a rut,but i,m quite happy with what i,ve got, people might say that i should strive for more, but i,m so happy i can,t see the point",..... Yep,i can fully identify with that. :-)
Love this song, but never knew the lyrics, until now, now trying to learn them, having some fun, having trouble with " well the brass band feet play" tricky one. it just don't sound right when it babbles out of my mouth..I will get it...
Hardcore... I reckon Noel Gallagher said it best. People kept calling him a genius- he said something like ... he didn't even start writing decent stuff until he was 24. Weller wrote such incredible, genius songs like this when he was just 19-21.
i don't hear songs these days(tho' i gues i'm out of touch) of this type of social comment, i think it would be more apt today than it was when weller wrote it, if he's not writing similar songs now, then he should be!....maybe he's not so hungry, maybe it was the trend back in the day, i certainly think somebody should be protesting about the shite that's happening these days.
WARNING DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T READ ALL THE HUNGER GAMES: Thumbs up if you think (if they make the third book movie) this should be played when they are being bombed in a certain forgotten district. (If this did accidentally catch your eye and you haven't read them all then I'm sorry :( No bad feed back just an idea.
My mate John Gwynne had this played at his funeral. Never made it to 18 years old but went out with style!!! God remember you Gwynnie!

Who would have thought that after all this time the lyrics of so many of our teenage anthems would be more poignant and prophetic that they were the first time round?
The public wants what the public gets

Cracking song Paul Weller"s lyrics are a masterpiece. Just as brilliant when it first came out.

Bruce’s bass sound on this track is simply fantastic. It usually always is, but this time it exceeds the usual
The lyrics to this (and other Jam tracks) are just incredible. You forget how young they were in their hey day. Grew up with them and every track resonates. Wonderful.
Still a great track & the lyrics seem even more relevant now than ever ....
Good workout music too
Epic song, and there's a truth to the lyrics, I can certainly identify with them! As they say, they don't make them like they used to, and they don't!
Now more than ever, this song makes so much sense.
Best part for me is from 2.18 onwards... it's as revelant today as when it was first released and I'm a 65 yr women who still loves the jam/Paul Weller....
I was never a fan of the Jam but i've got to really like this song over the years.

I don't know why 33 people downvoted. The lyrics are very accurate and the song is a smoker, so why downvote? Just let The Jam flow ;)
Their probably Steps or Aqua fans
I'm sure the Lyric is "YOU'LL SEE Kidney machines REPLACED BY rockets and guns."
You're right, it is.
That break at 1:59 always gets me in the feels

There is an apostrophe button you know. Don,t do that.
Any one else think that this song is relatable to modern society
Any body here because they want to work out which song the London Underground song is parodying
Puts this song to shame tbh😂😂😂😂
nice , thanks.
amazing song. and still relevent. "its the kidney machines that cost for rockets and bombs", nothing changes!

I'm going underground. I have a nice little shelter. I've got lots of cans of tuna fish, dolphin friendly of course.
Old school, when life was sweet and One did.. not give a sh..
This song sounds like it should've been called born this way
1:32 I always notice the barking sound, sounds as my dog was doing it
actually the london underground song was a spoof of this song, so really it wasn't the wrong song
perfection
The government shouldn’t have the responsibility for healthcare - yet they should have responsibility for the defence of the nation.
braying sheep. he got it right all those years ago
Oi, did anyone notice we still have braying sheep on TV screens.
This reminds me of that guy from the war of the worlds (audio not the film) who wants to build a city underground to escape the martians

Some people might like to get a train to work...
Or drive in a Beamer or a Merc.
We are the mods!!!!!
Still better than the crap on the radio these days, the Beatles and the old music are much better :P
+Gaming Addictionzz What's this got to do with the Beatles? Just a classic lame hipster comment.
No I'm saying that the song is better than the crap on the radio these days I was just saying the Beatles were an example of good music :3
Gaming Addictionzz Believe me, there was plenty of shit released when the Beatles were bossing it. You're just picking the highlights.
+Tom Pick also I'm not a hipster and that wasn't a lame comment, it was the truth cause the songs these days are a load of crap.
Gaming Addictionzz There has always being a load of crap. Linking the Beatles with this was just daft.
A way of life
Thank you for the lyrics but it is "too busy dodging through the flak". Not flax.
