This is such an artful character teaser... I really wasn't expecting that from a rational and shrewd character like Alhaitham to have a teaser like this. I think this is the most beautiful character teaser they've made so far, that and the combination of the delicate, emotional piano music in the background really makes me feel at awe
What i like about this teaser is how it beautifully portrays the dichotomy between the internal and external world of "intellectuals". Like what you said, most scholars are deemed boring because of their rational and straightforward behavior, but most of the times they have these passionate sides that they reserve for their best interests. I think it can also apply for introverts as well.

I agree. There were many emotional teasers like Nahida's or Raiden's, but this hits differently. It is not emotional, it is beautiful. The writing, the ambiance and animations, all excellent, truly artistic. To me is up there with the "Tsubaki in thawing snow" Ayaka trailer, although I still prefer Ayaka's because it is both beautiful and emotional.
And it seems as if they've dropped some important lore hints.

I'm a very rational person(although not quite as much as Alhaitham), but I'm also very empathetic and really appreciate art and so I think people view me more robotic than I really am. I love all the beautiful things in the world and that's why I love science, to see all the beautiful things the world has to offer and I get to learn how it works, understand all of it's secrets, it's mesmerizing. Maybe that's why I'm drawn to this trailer so much, because I guess I can relate to it

The teaser really seems like to indicate that, compared to most character teasers, he really is just a normal dude who enjoys and desires to learn and study as much as he could. His character introduction even says that he simply yearns for an ordinary life, but unfortunately, life on the other hand, has different and not-so-ordinary plans for him.
Yeah, it will interesting to see his character development. Definitely feels as if he is somewhat tied to work and duties
Exactly that. Most of the people here writes him off as a very complicated character but he's just a simple person who happens to be so gifted and introverted in his own way.
Admit it, when you're that gifted, life won't be normal and ordinary to you.
The funny thing is, the more the game/he insists he's normal, the more I think he isn't. Especially since we don't know anything about his backstory (barely anything on his akademiya days either). Even compared to unreleased characters like Dehya or Kaveh who we do have quite a lot of backstory for!
I dunno I'm kinda gearing up for either a Collei-like backstory (where he's trying to be extra normal to make up for the tragedy) or even a non backstory like amnesia (which explains why he favors knowledge being written down so heavily).
ngl, Alhaitham reminded me a bit of saiki k. Both characters want to live normal, quiet lives, but the universe has other plans for them oof 😔

I've never seen a more beautiful teaser in my life. I always thought that Al Haitham had more to his personality than just his rationality. His curiosity and perception of the world is so fascinating, it resonates with me deeply. His demeanour also feels like that of a noble intellectual.

I'm a sucker for philosophical musings. Alhaitham is another character who kinda snuck up on me in terms of me growing to like them. Had neutral thoughts on him when we first met him, then he really comes through during the Archon quest with his alternative points of view, attention to detail, latent leadership capabilities (he doesn't like being a leader, but the ones who eschew the role tend to be the best ones) and overall reliability. Now we have a small glimpse of his inner world, and it was very thoughtful and gripping. I'm a fan!
Same, I've grown to respect him, especially as a fellow enthusiast of relation between language and origins of the world.

Hi everyone so a little bit of clarification:
We see that Al-Haitham seems to flip the page to the other side, as if he's reading the book backwards. This is actually normal for the Arab-speaking world as they read from right to left. Since Sumeru is at least partially based off that, this is a cool little detail. 😁
And I thought it was because the game was originally Chinese? This makes more sense as Chinese is generally written left to right nowadays.

I think I understand how much Alhaitham enjoy's his scribe secretary position. He may say it's an easy cushy job, but I honestly think it brings him comfort to be in a position that center's itself with forming questions, preserving, and passing down knowledge. In a way it combines the things he's learned from his grandmother and his parents. Unable to really know who they were, maybe their words in the books he reads from them have a lot more depth than we currently know about.
The facts that Dehya offer him the position of being scribe then he try to do the same but Dehya refused. I hope they got more interaction

Al Haitham’s voice is so soothing. I wish he’d narrate a 4 hour nature documentary. I’d listen to it all the time. Love the part at 0:21. Superbly animated and I loved seeing cameos from Dunyarzad and Nahida

alhaitham’s passion for knowledge is what makes him perfect for the role of Grand Sage. he doesn’t fight for knowledge because he lust for power, he fight for knowledge because he loves Teyvat and wants to know everything about her, and he doesn’t judge her for her worst moments. he embraces them and uses these moments as lessons, rather than warnings. he is the ideal scholar in many ways, even if he is a *little* full of himself sometimes.

@Racool it would probably put him at odds with Celestia just like what happened to Orobashi then again, Celestia is by far the most malevolent faction we know anything about right now so that might not be a bad thing morally speaking. Celestia makes even the Fatui look like saviors in comparison.
He doesn't like being a leader but he has all the necessary qualities to be one. We wouldn't have freed Nahida and end Azar's bs if it weren't for him.

I really love this side of his character. It’s easy to take him to be an aloof and shrewd academic, but he truly embodies what a scholar should be: curious. To ponder deeply about the world and ask question that may never be answered takes courage. Perhaps, he is the closest to Nahida in spirit.

I disagree. I'd say the main difference between Alhaitham and Nahida is the fact that Alhaitham's curiosity is mostly self-serving. He's not evil or anything, but to me he seems like he mostly can't be bothered to do good, to help others, unless it helps himself in some way. He doesn't seem to care that much about the everyday Sumeran. In contrast, Nahida cares a great deal about all her people's well-being.
Alhaitham is not all bad. He wants to teach Paimon how to read, which seems like a selfless act, but I feel he has a long way to go before he can be compared to the Archon in spirit. Nahida herself basically says he lacks a certain empathy for others. Collei and Kaveh seem much more aligned with Nahida's spirit, in my opinion.

Ooh, really good point about Nahida. Also I love the expression that it takes courage to ask questions that may never be answered, it's something we may not think about.
I can see now that Alhaitham is what every akademiya student should be. Like what Nahida said when she had decided to shut down the Akasha. Curiosity will once again be what drives the students to attain absolute knowledge. As someone who writes legal documents of the Akademiya (and knowing how audacious the Akademiya was), he would start connecting the dots, and then his curiosity drove him to even go against even the Akademiya. Now that I think of it, he's the human equivalent of the Akasha.
I think he's better than Akasha. Akasha can be rewritten, erased, shut down. Follows a rigid flow as a library that's given just enough intelligence to track the unpredictable. Al-Haitham? He proved himself way above the system by thwarting it and rescuing the Archon once and for all. The nature of human is evolution, the ability to adapt despite their many weaknesses, and that's what makes them incomparable.
The search for knowledge is a double sided coin. It can lead to the discovery of forbidden knowledge and/or the return of Celestia. Rukkadevaha probably unintentionally stopped Sumeru getting nailed thanks to their "lazy" culture that came with the akasha.
@@lilianne959 people only got lazy AFTER she died. The akasha gained the purpose we saw in the present because the sages didn’t trust/want nahida as their deity.
Nahida herself isn't that fond of him though. He's smart but he despises common folk - and that in Nahida's eyes is the opposite of wisdom

I really hope he and Xingqiu meet one day to geek out over books. I like to imagine he'd get Xingqiu into reading more nonfiction while Xingqiu gets him into reading more fantasy and poetry. Maybe they'd even become pen pals and start a mini book club between the two of them where they pick out a book and read it at the same time to compare thoughts and notes. That'd be so adorable.
I think Xingqiu will get along better with Kaveh compared to Haitham (Kaveh appreciates arts, poetry, and stories better than mr.rational). If Haitham goes to Liyue... his biggest possible connection is actually our granpa Zhongli (who have a scholar friend from Sumeru mentioned in Wangshu inn's bulletin board).
And if he comes to Mondstat, he will get along with Albedo. Since Albedo also seek the truth of Teyvat

I love how this trailer could interpret alhaitham as another "witness to the world", not necessarily in the same way the traveler is, but he's a scribe, he reads what's in the past and writes down events to happen
Alhaitham's ideals and perspectives are really motivating. They make me want to reach out seek truth about various things I have mostly been avoiding. Mihoyo really nailed it with this character ♥️

Alhaitham, at least in this video, really personifies the entire Sumeru inspiration on the ancient civilization of Sumer, which is (so far) the very first historic people. History (in terms of what defines "pre-history") is the recording of events for sake of the future generations, and Sumer has the oldest found historic record at over 6000 years old.
Basically, Alhaitham is the one who really seeks to preserve culture of such an old civilization under the blessings of the God of Wisdom. He pretty much is modern Sumeru itself.
His teaser is surprisingly ever so serene and calming 💗

His teaser shows us a different side to him, one that feels romantic even? This is probably bc he is describing his passion for knowledge and language, not just demonstrating his intelligence by strategizing and researching. We now have a glimpse of how he yearns to know more about his world, but it's "forbidden" to try and answer those questions (like the origin of language).

Just accepting the Absurd in life rather than to fight it.
I love his Character!
Commenting this from 3.8, I love that a lot of people said he’s the closest to Nahida’s ideals. Then Kaveh arrived and it appears that we didn’t have the full picture. Kaveh is also closest to Nahida’s ideals, but in a different way. Alhaitham represents knowledge while Kaveh represents wisdom. It’s only when these combine and/or clash that they fully embody Nahida’s spirit and represent Sumeru.
The artwork and music in these videos are always amazing... Thank you hoyo, for bringing us this! I especially love the fact they added Nahida and Dunyarzad in the background. Good luck to everyone pulling for alhaitham :D

The Father of Modern Optics, ibn Hajar al-Haitami, is a real scholar who write Book of Optics and define many optic principles.
This inspired the creation of Alhaitham's character, skill, and lifestyle.
This is a great teaser. It has a totally different feeling to every other. I love the music too. Alhaitham is the first character to show a lot of depth to his thought in a teaser like this and it gives a feeling of the ephemerality of life and the feeling of the passing of the ages. I'm curious why the study of the origin of the writing system is forbidden at the Akademiya.
I think that it is forbidden due to the fact that language (linguistics/etymology) will invariably carry forth the history of the time it was created. This is an idea that is quite evident in the teaser. The Heavenly Principles and/or Celestia may want to cover up history, specifically that of the first who came and the time before the second throne. By seeking out the beginning of language, you'd probably end up finding out too much and the Heavenly Principles may smite you and the civilisation you live in into oblivion.
Just my little theory though.
Haitham hands down have one of the best teaser, we went from few gifs to animations like this, its beautiful

When I first saw his character leak I honestly thought he would sound a lot like Zhongli with a low and slow talking voice, but i'm really glad it didn't turn out that way. I feel like his english voice fits him very well and i'm happy my expectations were wrong!

I love this side of Alhaitham. Being a silent lover of linguistics etymology and overall semiotics I really wish they expand upon this aspect of him. (Imagine him having fun with weird linguistic paradoxes, tonguetwisters, I bet he has like 3 notebooks with unfinished conlangs/conscripts!)

В дождливую погоду это очень явно, особенно среди разговоров с самим собой о чем-то важном, но в тоже время и нет. Это так близко мне и это так удивительно, как личность Хайтама перекликается с моей личностью. Очень ценно, когда твой любимый персонаж во многом перекликается с тобой. Как будто между нами есть связь и это восхитительно. В общем и целом, я люблю этот трейлер и я люблю Аль-Хайтама. Очень жду его в самой игре💚

I never thought his trailer would feel so… peaceful. Kinda contrasts his brooding personality that we usually see in the story, except this trailer alludes to his dedication as a scribe, who only wants to seek and report the truth rather than hide it like the past Akademiya
