One of the dry sump companies, Peterson, Moroso, CV Products, or Barnes had a dry sump pump pulley that had a one-way roller clutch in it that allowed you to spin the pump over with a drill to prime and prelube the engine without having to mess with the belt. It was a pretty cool idea. I think fairly recently someone came up with a remote oil filter housing with its own priming pump built in that used a ball-end hex in a drill, also pretty cool. I ran oil pressure accumulators on a couple drag cars in the past, that works too. With a solenoid, soon as the ignition is turned on it opens and prelubes the engine, the oil pump when running recharges it. It will also save you with a loss of oil pressure. Had a high 9 sec Nova that had an alky injected 383 SBC, bearings and everything looked brand new after 5 seasons on it.

Also keep in mind when Steve disassembled, cleaned, remachined, and rebuilt his own engine, it was for his own use and his own pleasure to be run at sick week and he didn’t even get much use on the new rebuild of that engine because he had transmission and u joint problems during sick week. He rebuilt that thing with all new parts and even posted the video of the build process to avoid ignorant comments like we are seeing. Steve built this engine with the intent of using it to win sick week! The idea of giving it to cleetus didn’t even come to fruition until after sick week was over and mullets Engine was headed to Steve to either be rebuilt or traded in. So that whole idea of people thinking Steve reused old bearings or just slapped this engine back together to get rid of it to cleetus is insane and needs to be squashed immediately. If anyone actually watched Steve’s videos they would know that there is a complete up close in depth full length video series of his blown up engine being disassembled, diagnosed, cleaned, repaired, machined, and rebuilt with brand new top shelf parts! Steve designed that engine from scratch and he is meticulous! And anyone who follows him knows that he videos everything mostly so people can learn and enjoy the content, but also to weed out ignorant questions, ignorant comments, and people who think they know everything.

Yeah, I'm with Tye that the metal is old debris from the 'mass exodus' as Steve called it. It's amazing how difficult it is to get all the metal shavings out of a block after a catastrophic failure, even with a parts washer. One of my buddies rebuilt a 400 SBC that had spun 3 rod bearings, and even after having the block honed and professionally cleaned, he had to put another set of bearings in it because a bunch of trash from the previous failure went through everything. It sucks but considering the other possibilities, it certainly isn't the worst outcome.

Lastly the engine ran fine during its dyno runs at Fuetech and at Sick Week prior to its tranny issues. Hopefully Steve will figure it out in TX. Every single engine build I've ever done, and every single new engine I've purchased, car/truck/small/tractor engines. All the same. Little bit of debris in the filter after run-in. I am meticulous about cleaning my engines during builds. I went in with gun cleaning brushes and cleared out all the oil passages on my last tractor engine build. Still a little bit of trash in the filter. Don't know where it always comes from, but it's always there. I just do a couple heat cycles now that I know this, drop the oil and change it right away after a new build. On something like this that had a catastrophic failure at one point, I'm not surprised you found some debris that worked itself loose. Keep an eye on it and if it keeps making more I'd be worried. I'd be surprised if that happened after you pulled all the caps and found nothing though. My guess is that you keep running it and it clears out and never comes back.

I remember watching the funny cars in thr 1980's, 5000 hp, 5 sec units. Now you can cruise that on the highway. Mind blown...

Can't wait to see this car at full blast. It will surely be the fastest ever for Cleetus and the team. Loads of fun to watch.

A used motor that is damn near 10L and one that threw x 8 rods once upon a time is to be expected to have some junk floating around. By the 2nd/3rd oil change it will be gold. Thing is still a monster with a lot of life in it. I am sure whatever you paid for it was well worth it.
