Zhiyun Weebill Lab + Sony G Master 16-35 2.8 (HEAVY LENS!)

  • Today, I'm answering ONE question: Should you buy the Zhiyun Weebill Lab to use with a full frame camera and heavy lens (like the GM 16-35 2.8)?
The Weebill Lab might be great for small camera setups, like crop bodies or with lightweight prime lenses, but can it handle a heavier rig? Zhiyun rates the max weight at 6.6lbs and claims that the a7iii + GM 16-35 2.8 can be used, but that may be questionable.

Guys, check the counterweight from small rig, specially made for zhiyun weebill lab. With those you can move camera forward and they are cheap. Although I'm still not sure, to buy weebill lab or moza air 2. Both are amazing, but I like the master package of Zhiyun.. 🤔

Okay guys here is my progress and I hope this will help. EOS R + 40mm f/2.8 (pancake) works great! Good clearance for the eye piece. This is a great combo. Please note ZY Play does not work on Android. Firmware update not possible on Android. NO Canon camera is being supported at this point in time, which also means you will not get full function of the Weebill, it will just work as a very basic gimbal, function only exist based on what is built into the gimbal.

Following up on my other comment here. I used someone’s advice and tried my 16-35mm without that little riser plate on the base plate. The one with two screws. The lens sits closer to the base plate this way and has more head room for the gimbal motor to clear. With this method I was able to handle a 16-35mm no problem. Had to use a friends as I sold mine because I thought it wouldn’t work. You should give this a try and do a follow up vid. I believe this solves the issue and no counter balance weights required.

I have tried the counter balance set up. I pre ordered and received a few weeks ago. It super bulky with a new base plate and hard to balance. Wasn’t impressed. I love my weebill lab because it’s super compact for travel. I’ve changed to the zeiss prime lens set of 18mm, 40mm and 85mm and this gimbal handles them all. With the crop option I have two focal lengths in one on every lens. Not ideal but for the small size and I can fit it all in a back pack with external monitor and a small drone.... can’t beat it for travel. I also purchased this set up with the intent of using with my g master 2.8 16-35 and ended up selling the lens. I’m happy over after the learning curve. It did suck though

Thank you for the HONEST review. I wonder how the Sony A7iii+Sony 24mm f1.4 would do. With aps-c crop and clear zoom on the A7iii you end up with 24mm, 36mm, and 54mm or with the Batis 18mm f2.8 you would have 18mm, 27mm and 40.5mm.

OrganicFarmer No problem. On paper I would think the a7iii and 24mm 1.4 would work well, but I was just so shocked on how weak the motors actually are in practice I would definitely test it before you buy (if you can). I think the 18mm (and maybe 40mm) is significantly lighter so that might work better.

Dude I'm right there with you!! I experienced the same problem with the Zeiss 16-35 F4 using a manfrotto quick-release plate, which is actually even lighter than the G master! I've been pulling my hair for the past 2 days trying to make it work correctly. I mean, it does work (without the quick-release), but I need the quick-release for my workflow. I've gotten it to work (does not balance right though) and it gives out after extended use. Definitely NOT a reliable set up, I am frustrated with this purchase as well and for something that advertises to handle 6+ pounds it is truly disappointing.

Weird, I was able to balance this easily with the 16-35 GM. but yeah, you have to walk slowly to get smooth footage for that lens. but still workable. you just have to avoid long lenses that are longer than 700 grams. The GM works well with the 50 1.4 which is fatter and heavier, but shorter and also the 35 F1.4 which is also about the same weight.

Jeff Barlow It may balance, but based on my experience with these motors, i don’t think you’ll have great performance out of it. Motors seem pretty whimpy, despite their claims.

@@jeffb4071 yeah my APS-C Sigma 16mm balanced & performed great on my Sony A7III, however, my Tamron 28-75mm feels like it's pushing it. I'm not a gimbal balancing Jedi so I'll be keeping an eye out on any TH-cam videos showing the Tamron 28-75 + the Weebill Lab, but so far I'm getting hiccups.

Thanks for the video Alchemy, I had this problem with even the lighter Tamron 28-75 and I had to return it and get the Ronin-s instead

Najee Films LLC it’s the price you pay for full frame. Big sensor = big lenses

A very useful video. This was totally going to be my setup but will now skip the weebil lab and look at alternatives. Thankyou.
