Thank you for distinguishing between the Puritans and the pilgrims. Most Americans and virtually every European I've ever encountered failed to understand that the Puritans were a group of Anglican dissenters who wanted to purify the church from within, while the Pilgrims were a Calvinist group that left the Church of England, elected not to join any of the other existing denominations like Lutheranism or presbyterianism but to create their own version of how worship should exist. Each group would have thought the other to have been heretical, rven if to our modern eyes, there's not much difference in them. (Of course, to our modern eyes, there wouldn't be much difference in either group and Presbyterianism as it existed at that time, but don't tell that to the Covenanters, the Puritans, or the Pilgrims. I'm pretty sure each group would have burned you at the stake.

The narration is beautiful, her voice is gorgeous and her words are really well crafted. It’s a well curated video with wildly important information. Ghosts of the past that still haunt us on a daily basis. An excellent video.
Not “artwork” though, her words are art. And she entered them into an AI thing and it made her video. I have personal feelings about ai art taking work from actual artists but that’s another topic lol

It's funny how the History that I learned at home as a child is finally coming out. There are so many more instances of violence that happened with different tribes. During one celebration leaders were invited to a dinner prepared with poison. This made it easy to destroy the rest. I've always called it Thanks for Killing us, not Thanksgiving.
My Elders said that there's History and then there is what really happened. Usually two completely different things.

As an Episcopalian I always had a problem with the focus on the New England puritans as opposed to the Anglicans who landed at Jamestown in Virginia. In fact I was kind of proud that the Church of England drove them out of England especially considering how pestilential they ultimately proved to be from a cultural standpoint. And by the time of the English Civil War some New England puritans actually sailed back to England to enlist in Cromwell’s New Model Army to fight against King Charles I. But by the time of the revolution the largest church in the colonies was the Church of England which after the revolution was renamed the Protestant Episcopal Church. But ultimately most of the Episcopalians defected to Methodism it would appear.

Actually, the CofE didn't drive them out. They left of their own accord because they thought they were holier than the rest of England. Where did the go? Amsterdam. Amsterdam had the same rep then as it does now. What WERE they thinking? The Dutch Calvinists were a different breed than the English Puritan Calvinists.
We also aren't taught about the hundreds of Anglican Churches burned to the ground and their vicars slaughtered at their Communion Tables for their allegiance to the Crown. "Americans would never do THAT!" Hog wash. They DID!

The emphasis on The Plymouth colony has its roots in the US Civil War. After all, prior to that the majority of the United States did not celebrate anything like Thanksgiving, at least not in any organized, National sense. But if you think about it, The Union was trying to hold the United States as it had existed from the Revolutionary War forward together, to try to cast itself as true inheritors of our nation, the real descendants of the founding fathers. But the fact that the first British permanent settlement was in Confederate held territory and unapologetically Confederate in nature, as well as the fact that so many of the founding fathers were at least slaveholders, if not from the States now in the Confederacy, made this task problematic. Focusing hard on Thanksgiving, making that the national narrative, effectively stripped the Confederate states of any significance in the founding of our nation, and falsely relabeled us as beginning from New England roots.
We are beginning to see historians questioning this, beginning to see more and more history books both in our middle and high schools as well as at a collegiate level not only mentioning Jamestown more prominently, but also emphasizing the other European nations colonies and their influence on us today. Unfortunately, these voices are being effectively muffled if not silenced by certain political groups invested in the notion that we sprang from a small group of religious zealots, rather than acknowledging that we have a blended origin. So it will probably be another 20 or 30 years before we begin to see a real change in the narrative.

"Thou shalt not kill". It amazes me how Christians, Jews and Muslims don't take this commandment seriously. Do they think they're God is blind? As a Buddhist we are taught not to kill anything. Not even bugs. And we do take this very seriously. Everything is a creation of a beautiful nature. Everything loves life and fears death. Why would you unnecessarily cause fear and suffering to any living thing. Karma is the result of your actions. War, and it's multitude of sufferings, is the karma caused by greed of our ancestors. It is completely unnecessary, and the downfall of humanity.

Divine Providence oversaw the people of the Mayflower. They didn't slaughter Indians or burn witches. Finally, someone tells the truth! Thank you! The lovely tale of harmless friendship they taught us in school is an impediment to societal progress. A point I'd like to mention: "Goode" was short for "Goodwife" and equivalent to modern "Mrs", not actually a nickname for Bridget Glover. The only other thing I would like to have seen different is historically accurate images, but I know AI can only do so much just yet and they are beautiful. ^_^

Just my personal approach to keep things informative and entertaining. Thanks for watching.

My first English-American ancestors landed in Green Harbor, a few miles north of the original Plymouth Bay Colony, in 1638. They were not religious. Rather, they were farmers and tradesmen seeking land. As oppressive religious fervor gripped Massachusetts, my ancestors spread out and headed southwest to Rhode Island and Connecticut. But one great granddaughter of the first guy ended up marrying a Puritan minister in Boston. The Rev. Hugh Calkins. The 1690s were rough in that area. Salem ring a bell? Legend has it that Calkins fell in with the Salem witch hunters. Not proud of that.

Sorry you feel that way. The purpose of the end was to show how many of our laws are based on religious moralism instead of evidence-based social protection, and how damaging that can be. Outlawing “sin” for its own sake is puritanical. Laws should be designed to protect people, not punish disparate lifestyles and beliefs. My opinion. Thanks for watching.

My great grandfather X10, Jonathan Fairbanks, came to America in the early 1630's. The house he had built in 1637, still stands in Dedham, Massachusetts. Jonathan Fairbanks "stood off from the church" but finally made a declaration of faith later in life. I'd like to believe that he rejected Puritan teaching but it's more likely he took up church membership for economic reasons.

Never knew the Puritan tradition was something so dark. Makes me really glad I didn't live in a Puritan society. It's a very far cry from the major East Asian spiritual traditions e.g. Buddhism, according to which man and Nature are already in a sense divine and man's 'sins' merely due to ignorance, which can always be corrected. Fascinating how great the differences can be in understanding man and the world. Just a thought...

Salem sounds similar to nowadays - with every other mainstream news report or social media post is pointing a finger at a group perceived of being the root of everything wrong.
the old rock music band Rush - once did an unusual song by their nerdy standards with straightforward lyrics called Witchunt which sums this up somewhat
& this video certainly beats listening to BBC local radio or watching Married At First Sight .& the visuals are fabulous. much appreciated

i did indeed include non mainstream attitudes by mentioning social media !
I’m too old or think I’m too wise or simply too ignorant or lazy to not want to argue for & against a lot of the politics or issues everyone appears to be experts of right now. i like to think i try to see at least two sides - perhaps like many whom had split parents with new partners when young - although we were fortunate that the 4 of them in spite of being quite diverse characters, managed to remain civilised,& they kind of taught us tolerance or understanding at an early age. Saying that , they weren’t divided over serious religious lines & we lived in heaven compared to much of what we’re shown today.
As for Rush, they turned into The Police which i didn’t understand but didn’t complain because there were many alternative musicians to hear 😃👍

Though am Catholic my dad's side of the family was Congregationalist, what was once Puritans. What was once a stuffy dour extreme faith became one of the most progressive. I just wish America's founding didn't mean the loss of native culture though, we lost so much, incalcuable tragic loss for the world. On Thanksgiving I think of the Native Americans, not so much the Puritans.

You are failing to distinguish between the two groups. Look at Roger Williams (exiled from Salem). The “right to worship as one sees fit” is an important right that King James the I failed to respect. Elizabeth the I had been much more willing to look the other way while people peacefully worshipped as long as they didn’t actively defy her. James I actively promoted witch hunts.
