A superb video Vanessa! What this illustrates is how easily our senses can be fooled. The police always make the point that an eye witness account is the most unreliable form of evidence with forensic evidence being the best. As a Physicist, I learned to always "rely on the math" and not on my innate instincts. Also, how many times has a hiker in the woods become confused, or even lost, when going with his/her instincts rather than just following their compass? Thanks again!
I definitely don't think the video was too long. Out of all pbs digital studios channels I frequent, I enjoy psb spacetime best and those videos range from 8 minutes all the way to 20. Another channel I thoroughly enjoy is pbs eons with videos ranging from 5 to 13 minutes. I personally prefer to be entirely engrossed in a topic and learn all the little intricacies of that topic, like the fact you added at the end of this video. For channels like physics girl, it's okay to be smart and even braincraft, it sometimes feels like the video is over before it really begun.
Now that your venturing into the perception arena, I have from birth strabismus and have always been interested in how I have managed to identify perception of depth. I cannot see 3D movies but I seem (well think I do) have 3D perception. Hope this could be one of your topics. Keep up the awesome work :)
Whitey Senior That's very interesting. Perception of 3D and depth also isn't just about having two eyes, though, as you can focus on far and close objects with just one eye and the world is made up of shadows and light. So I imagine that also has something to do with it.
Correct, I can only see out of one eye at a time, hence why I can see 3D. They tell me the brain has been educated to identify depth and dimension. I also wondered if my perception of depth etc. is different to two eye focal. There is nothing I can find to be able to test that theory. Remembering my site perception was trained or learned from birth, so just covering one eye is not a valid test. Anyway I like your thought pattern.

I am wondering if we are tricked by the perspective illusion (Ponzo's) just because we are used to see pictures in perspective, or if it is natural. What I mean is even if we see the "real world" in a sort of perspective (farer things look smaller), perspective is a mathematical abstraction which was first theorized in Renaissance (you can find it sometimes before that period, but it's not mathematical, it's "intuitive perspective"). In the medieval age, for example, perspective wasn't used in paintings. They had a different "code", like things behind were pictured above, while small people weren't farer then the big ones, but just less important (like small angels, big virgin Mary). Do you think that a medieval person, used to this kind of rapresentation of the world, would be tricked by the Ponzo's illusion? Or not? Has the illusion had ever been tested to some people belonging to some remote culture in which perspective isn't used?
Since I first heard it, my understanding of the world has been affected by the statement, "Our senses did not evolve to show us the world as it is, but rather as it was useful to see it in the past."

Everytime someone tells me it is an illusion. I don`t choose the answer that I think it is correct, because I know they are trying to trick me. And that hand thing in the very seems pretty weird.
The problem is that you, as myself, have seen all possible illusions already, so you know what to expect. However the Poggendorff illusion was new to me and for a moment I thought the line was between the red and blue lines, but after a second or so I came to the conclusion that is is the red line. Nice to see that I was right, even though my first feeling was wrong.

I wouldn't consider an under 5 minute video long. On that note I think it would awesome to do a video on attention spans. My 12 year old son just bought himself a fidget spinner to my dismay. He is completely healthy and I worry that his use of the device developed for those that do have attention problems, may actually do him harm by reducing his attention span in times that he doesn't have it. What are your thoughts on these things?
seth davis I heard somewhere that it doesn't hurt a lot. In the way that it normal for people to do background tasks while focussing on the main problems. What I would worry about is if the spinner isn't distracting him. as someone with adhd myself I think toese spinner would distract me (and the cubes even more). I'll just find a coping strategy on my own :D

You assume blind people process touch stimulation with the same cerebral regions as non blind people but it's not the case. Visual cortex si rewired and is used for sensory perception
You know, you're talking a lot about blindness in this video, but it isn't actually accessible to the blind without image description. Close your eyes and try to watch to see what I mean. Image description doesn't have to be awkward either, you can just casually mention anything important that pops up on the screen and that'll be enough.

Optical illusions are dumb anyway. They force you to witness a design in 2 dimensions. It doesn't matter if it extends into a "background" or if there's a cube or something present, it's still on a flat piece of paper or screen. Go on, just try and be tricked when you have 3 dimensions to work with. Your eyes are so good at detecting small increments in angles that if you saw these as sculptures and not pictures, you wouldn't be fooled. If we were cyclopses, or the illusions were 3 dimensional, then there'd be a reason for them existing. You know, maybe as a way to play with your natural abilities, but are you ever going to come across a scenario in your survival where you have to deal with a 2D image? Optical Illusions are exercises for just standard brain activity, but what purpose does recognising a 2 dimensional trick have?
