- I bought a fake Lego set from China off of Temu.com. Today I'm breaking down all the differences between fake Lego and the real deal! Is there really a difference? Is it worth paying a lot more for a real Lego set? I'll answer all your questions and more in this video. Thanks for watching!

I really hope those other companies (not just Chinese) make good, original and affordable sets to eat lego's market. Lego is becoming ridiculously expensive.
Ya if nothing else hopefully a little competition will eventually cause Lego to ease up their pricing a bit.
Fake sets are good if, you want retired sets without paying the outrageous 3rd party prices
I wouldn't buy a knockoff of a current set myself
That’s true. I’d love to collect every modular but the retired ones are crazy expensive
Perfectly said. I've ordered Fego (Fake Lego) to recreate the retired stuff....or in Indy's Temple of Doom case, "canceled" sets....but yeah, if it's still on the shelves, might as well get it. Just wait for a good GWP :D
@@PurpleBox89
Fego... I like that
I usually call them LegFaux
Same here! Only buy the old retired sets, not 2500 euro 🤣 bought the fire brigade last time and it was perfect
I bought a fake Orient Express for $48 because i wanted a train with 4 carriages and spending $600 scared me, and it is 99% there. It is so close other than the figs which I do not care about that I am highly impressed, the gold stripe printing is FAR BETTER on the fake than the real one where it is bent, the fakes printing is perfectly straight. I was a "Lego Only" purist after some awful experience 15 years ago with bricks that would not stay together, now I will buy any not Lego. Buying Not Lego when you are into trains is pretty much the norm now, it is "fitted as standard" with most train MOCers I know because trying to get certain Lego pieces is either impossible or will bankrupt you. There are some train windows and doors where you would need to take out a mortgage to buy them, or maybe Lego never did the piece in the color you want, or the track pieces with wider curves and cross points. So many pieces to do with trains you now can get, you just have to buy not Lego, and I am now cool with that. I bought another Emerald Night, $25 instead of $700 for the Lego one, and it is 99% there and looks spectacular, its so good I just bought another so my train now will have 3 carriages...and i cant wait to see it running.
Spectacular vid! a 100% ten outa ten vid...have fun building.
Makes total sense. I was impressed with the quality of the fake set so I can totally understand branching off when needed.
Ha! Yeah. My first fake LEGO experience was putting together some carriages for my (real LEGO) Emerald night. The tolerances of the fake are not as good, but the color match was perfect. Oh, and fake train wheels don’t roll as smoothly, so I replaced them from pick-a-brick.
legos became ridicously expensive, good thing there are good decent quality knock-offs
The prices have gotten out of control for sure

The second hand market for Lego is so bad and some of the older retired sets are so cool. I dont have any problem skipping these scalpers that try to earn some quick money that you worked hard for. you dont support LEGO at this point. But newer sets i always buy from LEGO and LEGO still has a special place in my heart.
Don’t blame you one bit
I do not think, there are "scalpers" in Lego world. There is no option to put hands on sets, creating shortage in the supply - mainly they are unlimited. The resellers are same people as we are, they bought in the past the set, and instead of opening it, they kept it sealed.
Just FYI: the fake sets do have boxes when sold in shops in Asia
some will show a brand logo, but a lot will be brandless
Ya I’m sure some do
Something that muddies the 'moral' argument is the fact Lego gives away their instructions, for free, on day one of release. So if you have a sufficiently large parts inventory at home you can build a reasonable facsimile of any lego model without needing to pay lego anything more. So in a sense these clone sets are just providing you with the required inventory to build a model - now that argument does fall down somewhat when they also include unique elements, printed tiles and stickers. However, I did recently buy the 2015 Shuttle Tyderium from Ali-Express, that was just a bag of parts; no stickers, no instructions, no minifigs. It's pretty rare to find those though.
Personally I love the knock-off sets, but generally try to avoid anything still in production by Big L. Once it's retired though, I have no qualms about getting it.
That’s true but if build something from parts you aren’t doing so to turn around and make a profit. The knockoff companies are stealing the design to sell and make money. I get what you’re saying tho and I agree about the retired stuff to, that’s a different story.
Fake Lego sets from China today carry the chance of being almost indistinguishable from the original.
I have a knockoff of the LEGO Old Fishing Store - beautiful and affordable - no Lego logo on the studs - that's it.
Different and amazing: the "Last of World" versions of Diner, Brick Bank, and Palace Cinema.
The copycats from far east add a lot to my world of building bricks.
👍
wow! Lego is the best but of course the non lego is much affordable esp to people like us :(
💯
I’ve built several “fake” Lego sets and I have no problems with any of them.
Much to my surprise they are so identical you can actually use the Lego Builder instructions to build them.
As far as “stolen” Lego as far as I understand is an Open Source company. If they weren’t they would probably sue for using their designs
Like Rolex sues for fake watches, Oakley sues for fake glasses, Nike sues for fake shoes? You can’t really sue a company that’s making fake stuff in china I don’t think. You’re right though almost identical.
@@jkbuilders2000so you don’t actually know?
Know what??
Ι have an enormous modular city with 75 modulars of which 35 lego and 40 chinese and they look awesome.first of all i didnt have the bank, the cafe corner,,the green grocer, market street, and the petshop which would cost at least 5000 euros or dollars,i got them identical for 400 euros.furthermore there are chinese modulars with great designs of their own or some brickatives modulars like university etc. There is no reason to be a lego purist except if you invest and you want to sell, otherwise there are very good and cheap choices from aliexpress
Ya I really wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference without looking very closely. I don’t blame anyone for buying the knockoffs, especially retired sets. I do wish I would’ve mentioned retired sets in the video.
Regarding the moral angle, just buy the CN sets for retired Lego sets, you're only eating into scalpers profits otherwise anyway.
Very true, wish I would've mentioned retired sets in the video.

@@AllthewayupG ya I'll have to do a follow up
I can't stand these companies making fake lego is just disappointing plus the parts don't click together very well anyone who buys fake lego is literally profiting off of stolen designs from lego
Can’t disagree, however, I was surprised at how close this particular set was to the real deal
Lego sets are copyrighted, therefore the companies that are making them and selling them cheaper are infringing on Legos copyright. Shame on them!
I buy and support the companies making there own original sets like funwhole, I’m actually planning to become one myself soon lol, but anyone stealing designs I’m against, while I do sympathize in the “retired modular” situation with price difference, on same hand, I’m still hard against it, because it’s really like your supporting stealing, and hurting original designers, to pay the thief for the convenience fee of ordering the parts for you, like if someone really wants to build a retired modular for cheap, you can get part list and instructions online free, and can go to webrick and order 3rd party parts yourself, for same price basically, without supporting design theft, and I know lego is huge Corp, but I can’t have double standards and say it’s ok to do to them, but not me, is how I see it, but again I’m SO down with genuine lego competition tho💪🤣 and also not knocking you or the vid, I get why “you” did this for vid lol, just speaking in general about the topic
I agree, I don’t think it’s right to support the stealing of designs, whether Lego or anyone else.
I get your points but with retired sets - why is it ok for resellers (who have bought x amounts) to then sell these retired sets for ridiculous $$$. I know not exactly the same but there is that At some point people make a choice about what they want to pay for plastic
I tried parting out the detective’s office through webrick last year… it was missing tons of pieces & still would’ve cost me a couple hundred dollars. I paid $64 total last month for one. If anyone ever asks, I’m gonna tell them it’s the official set & there’s nothing you can do to stop me! aHahahaha!
@@rosemarie9956 Because Lego got compensated for those sets.
I love "official" Lego. HOWEVER, many of the "off-brand" sets today are so close in build experience, quality and representation (display-ability) that it's very difficult to justify some of the price differentials. Speaking only for myself, my Logo budget these days isn't what it used to be so, $85 vs $230 with minimal differences all the way around? That makes 'Some' off-brands a no-brainer. I've built many Lego and non-Lego sets and in most cases my friends literally cannot immediately recognize one from the other until I point out which is which and they're like, WHAT? Especially when I explain how much cash I saved. Just my thoughts
Very true, I was pretty surprised how similar they were.
When you buy a Lego set you aren't just paying for what's in the box; the cost also includes the cost of designing the set. The Chinese counterfeiters are free-riding on Lego's work.
@@YellowBunchofBananas Very true, not to mention advertising, licensing, etc.
I can't see myself buying fake Lego. I have quite a few sets/pieces and didn't want the parts to be mixed together.
Good point, I’d feel the same way
I bought a fake Lego Titanic icon set for around £100 delivered from China and it's indistinguishable from the real thing - other than the missing Lego logo on the studs. It is theft though. Companies like Mould King and CADA are now doing their own official designs/sets (mainly 1/8 scale supercar Technic models), so they're not really fake - but still a third of the price as the Lego equivalents.
Lego needs to put prices down and the problem will be solved. Buy chinese sets, show LEGO the right way
Its true, prices are out of control
Lego pays their designers and their workers really good wages and benefits. They also have physical stores, good packaging and marketing. All that costs money! Chinese brands are just copying the end product, so it's a lot cheaper for them to make these sets.
@@TonyMontanaDScap that’s 100000 out of 1billion+ net worth 😂
@@TonyMontanaDS Very good points
Thanks for the video! I only bought other brands IF they're original designs and not blatant Lego rip-offs. Eg. Decool's "Courage of the Three Kingdoms" series are so good (I love castles btw), and their minifigures are better than Lego's IMHO because the arms have ball joints so they can rotate. If you love ancient Chinese themes, check them out!
I'll have to check them out
Thanks for the tip! I love the period of the Three Kingdoms! Will definitely check them out!
Well done on that ending, I'll sub for that, lol.
😂 thanks 👍
Instructions are free on the Lego site. These companies are just supplying the bricks to build them. Same as the free instructions on rebrickable. You can order those sets too. Just supplying the bricks. It isn’t a rip off if the instructions are free. You are just using bricks that aren’t Lego. For me bricks are bricks. My wallet thanks me!
But Lego spends millions designing and marketing their product. Just because they put the instructions out there doesn’t mean they want their products copied and sole…
Black off brand pieces are very brittle. The clips etc. can be expected to fail during construction or transport.
My off brand model Land Rover Defender would have been €280 at the Lego store in Berlin. My chinese copy presented at Christmas by student son cost €64. There were a couple of missing pieces in the fake set. However I ordered Lego parts to replace them. All black clips will he replaced. Some of the grip strength was poor also. In the 1960's Airfix produced an alternative brick series. They did not grip well. Sluban also makes a mark in my collection. This hobby is what you can make of it.
Interesting stuff 👍
I could tell which one was official, and which one wasn’t by the difference in the dark red color. Probably only because they were next to each other though.
Really? I couldn't tell myself
I have no issues buying knock offs of retired sets... Lego has made their money, and the only people really kicking and screaming are the 'investors' who've been blowing out the used prices for years now.... that said, the FunWhole and Pantasy original designs I've purchased have been wonderful...
💯
I think for the minifigure, we could as well find the Lego brand on the leg to identify real or fake
True
We at home for us and the kids (The Netherlands) NEVER buy Chinese fake. Ever. Not gonna spend our money on rip offs …and poor work conditions and what not. Thanks for the great video.
I don't either (except to make youtube videos😂)
Jkbuildings enjoy the alternative building bricks😊
You do d a fair review when comparing the two. I prefer now to say copycat Lego as that is what they are doing here. There are ALTernative companies that build and sell sets also using their own designs as you mentioned- Fun Whole and Pantasy for example and their quality is really good. This type of competition for Lego sets s just starting to ramp up so that will be interesting.
As for the copycat sets - some are better than others and especially if people want a retired set than they might decide to buy that way or simply curious as you were. I simply choose not to judge people in these types of situations.
Thanks. I was impressed with the quality, hopefully the competition eventually brings prices down but I won’t hold my breath. The next thing I may do is buy an original set from a place like funwhole and review that compared to official Lego.
Nothing wrong with fake brick build legos. Doing them has a display piece, just fine. However, DO NOT get fake lego sets that use technic builds to move components. That crap doesn't work right at all.
Good to know 👍
Not true where technic cars are concerned, they work just fine. The only downside is that sometimes the stickers are of a lower quality.
@@norwood8888 Well I gotten the typewriter, R2D2, and the harley looking motorcycle, got them from ali express and the technic components, didn't work properly has they should. The motor for the bike, I literally had to sand the pieces so the mechanism will actually go up and down, The R2, legs didn't move properly and one of the bigger technic pieces was bent. The typewriter the technic that makes that wrong, didn't work. So I would stay away from fake technic pieces.
@@topher9507 Well I only build 1/8th scale technic cars (20 or so..) and apart from the sometimes low quality stickers (looking at you Mercedes W14!) have had no such problems. Some of the more complex gear boxes can be temperamental but they are in Legos own models and is often down to building incorrectly. By the way they are not fake Lego bricks but alternative bricks.
@@norwood8888 to me if they are not from lego, than they are fake. I'm going with having brick build legos. I bought the titanic, cuz I couldn't see myself spending over $700 for the authenic. So I got the fake version for under $200. But technic doesn't work all that well or not as they should. You can justify to me all you want. Not going to work.
There is no Fake Lego, the only thing lego owns are the „minifigure“ and maybe the Instruktion of a set.
If you call it Fake, i obly buy fake Lego because there are many other brands with the same or better quality and more printed parts and way better models. The only thing is you get no minifigures or other one‘s .
More people should buy Alternative Bricks because the „Brick“ is not Lego, Lego is just an expensive Brand.
Sorry for the bad English i hope you understand what i want to tell you.
Lego has ownership of their designs though and there are companies that steal their designs for profit, I'd call that fake.
I bought a knockoff Ghostbusters Firehouse , I haven't built it yet. It came in 80+ small bags and an instruction manual but the bag numbers don't seem to correspond with the steps in the manual
Dang that’s gonna be tricky… would love to hear how it goes when you get around to building it
@@jkbuilders2000
Yeah... I have A LOT of part sorting to do
Lol
I did that, took a long time but oh well...I did have to oder the smaller baseplate separately because the one that came with it was actually higher than the bigger baseplate
@@jimbear62 as long as you see the entire Lego design...I find it more fun trying to figure out what pieces go together from image than step-by-step manual..
Like Legos 3D app but it's to step-by-step for my taste....always have to zip to the end for the full/module build but if a piece is hidden or I have no 3D look. Then that's where I get annoyed...hopefully u have all viewpoints for the alternative brick
Great review and explain. Thank you. I refer to them not as "fake Lego", but "alternative building bricks". The average, non overpriced Lego set is worth money paid for it. But another building bricks brand allows to have the same (almost the same), but for 3 times less price. I think, budget and quality of specific set are main factors to decide what to buy.
I would consider them fake if they are copying a Lego design.
@@jkbuilders2000 This is no different from auto-parts. There are OEM, and there are same, from 3rd party (not speaking auto parts from Amazon and similar). The alternatives sometimes even improved and better in quality.
I’m all for these set .. not everyone has $1000_$1400 to spend no buildings like market square green grocer and cafe corner .. so if I can get these set cheap I will do ..
No judgement here, I probably should have mentioned retired sets in the video, because you're right some of the prices people are asking are just making them unobtainable.
Tons, like millions, of Star Wars minifigures just are sold to those who want to build Stormtroopers, Clones, or any large quantity soldiers. can't tell them from the real ones apart, but for $5.00 US apiece, it's a good business for the black market.

A little history lesson. Let’s star out with Lego stealing and idea waaaaaay backin the beginning of their company history. That would be a good place to start. I have no stock in Lego. And if I like a set and it’s at a lower cost and quality is not a big discernible difference then Temu take my money but not all of it. Lol

@@dextereason-rl3kj Me sharing my opinion isn't judging someone else for doing what they want to do. Go troll somewhere else bro.
I have zero ethical dilemma buying fake for retired sets. If it’s retired, LEGO has already captured all the profit from the IP that they ever will. If it’s still in production, I’ll buy real LEGO. The brick quality and build experience of fake LEGO isn’t bad, but it’s still better with the real stuff.
Good video, btw.
That’s true and something I probably should have mentioned. If the set is retired you’re not really taking any money out of the pockets of Lego.

@@YellowBunchofBananas Don't know of a time Lego has done a straight up re-release. They've redone sets that are very similar like the UCS falcon and the Batman Tumbler, but they were still pretty different.
If someone think that he will save money with buying fake lego is stupid…
When you buying original lego, price of those sets will be raising up over the years and when you dont want them anymore, you can simply sell them and got your money back, but if you buy fake lego, set worth is 0 bucks and in 10 years will be 0 bucks, simply as that
