Becky, you are a star. Found a mint condition K2 screen online and, thanks to your clear instructions, just installed it in my Nikon FE. Huge difference, no dust, so much brighter. Set +1/2 EV compensation and I’m ready to go. Thank you so much!
Making something look casual, that used to cause so much angst, is impressive, but diminishes memories that gave feelings of competence. It's almost like finding out that your god tier manual gear changes were straightforward.
Very well done Becky👍 Perhaps a few words of caution on avoiding contact with the mirror surface when working in or around the mirror box would be helpful to newbies😊
As the old saying goes, "A mime is a terrible thing to waste." Nice video. Never changed the focusing screen on any of my film Nikons but this would have been helpful in my day.
I think the FM was very entry level and it didn’t have interchangeable focusing screens, like the FE. === Btw, between the F2AS Photomic, F3HP or F4S which one would you recommend?
The FM v 3( only one knurled knob on top ) has a screw to remove before taking out the focus screen. It can be replaced. I wish this video demonstrated that!
This is weird. Just a few hours ago I took all four of my film Nikons and did a lonnnnng awaited inspection and cleaned my focusing screens. Yes, gloves or at the very least using a lens cloth to handle the screens are important, it is easy to get dust and scratches on them.
It wasnt super clear about the back metal part of the FM2. What did you do to release the mirror? you pressed the metal tab at the front but anything else?
I used the focusing screen on my Nikon F2 & F3 is " A " for general purpose & for telephoto I used " B " type screen & for special purpose i used " H1" focusing screen.
Thank you for your wonderful vdios. Sure could use a tutorial on the white or red label found on nikon f focus screens. Ergo, which end faces forward. I thought the brand name faced forward twords lens? Girl on you tube says nikon faces the photographer. Very confused. Thanks for any help. Long time f user.😅
re: screens for F/F2 On taking off the finder: pressing downwards on the finder may help releasing the finder. On removing: I would recommend just holding the camera upside down, gravity will do the rest, without any risk of touching the mirror or the focusing screen. Regards, Gilbert
Thanks for the video. I purchased a "F" body, from 1969, today, at the princely sum of $27😋. It shows signs of use on the edges, but no abuse, just like I like my vintage cameras. Only problem was that it hadn't been used, or cleaned, since the late 1990's. After some time removing the dirt and cigarette-tar, it is now crystal-clear. And only 3 years younger than me, it's a childhood dream come true..
The F and F2 screen can be removed just by pressing on the finder release button again while the camera is upside down. Catch it with a soft cloth. No need to stick anything in the middle box. To install, plop it I'm and press on the bottom to retract the teeth.
Here is a simple tip on releasing the focusing screen on the F2. After you remove the prism, repress the small release button on the back, tilt the body over a soft towel, the prism will fall out. There is no reason to touch it with gloves or cleaning clothes. To install repress again and the prism will drop right in place..GRINS
Type of focusing screens:
B, B2. B3,
E, E2, E3
K, K2, K3

Good point!
Can't thank you enough! You know so much about this all.
Great video. How about the EL models?
Excellent ! Thank you.
Every Nikon I've owned always got the grid screen installed. It works well with just about every lens from primes to telephoto.
Super explanation. Thanks!
Good one! Very informative.
A great video that helped me enormously. We’ll done.
Brilliant thanks. How applicable is this to digital bodies, such as the D3S?
Becky,
Can you explain how to properly use the Type C focusing screen for the F5?
As the old saying goes, "A mime is a terrible thing to waste." Nice video. Never changed the focusing screen on any of my film Nikons but this would have been helpful in my day.

Thanks a bunch! I did it!
I just put a fingerprint on part of my F3’s yesterday!, and I got really scared! Any way of cleaning it? 🙏🏾🧼🚿🧽

Life saver!

Becky what screen would you recommend for a 200mm ais lens on a F2as or F3. I have K's in there now and the black out drives me nuts, thank you.

Hi, I woulld like to know how to clean or remove the focusing screen of Nikon D3 camera. Thank you.
Can you do that with a Nikon D4?????
I assume the Nikon FM is the same with Nikomat/Nikkormat camera
re: screens for F/F2
On taking off the finder: pressing downwards on the finder may help releasing the finder.
On removing: I would recommend just holding the camera upside down, gravity will do the rest, without any risk of touching the mirror or the focusing screen.

what about dslr? like D700 and such
Thanks for the video.

Have you ever put a split prism screen into a dSLR?
Can you put a Nikon F focusing screen marked A into a Nikon Fe2 camera?
The F and F2 screen can be removed just by pressing on the finder release button again while the camera is upside down. Catch it with a soft cloth. No need to stick anything in the middle box. To install, plop it I'm and press on the bottom to retract the teeth.
F4 had 13 different focusing screens available, all allowing for autofocus operation.
Could you show us how to remove a focusing screen on a Nikkomat/Nikkormat?
Can I use plastic gloves instead of cotton?
Please do a video for DSLRs too :-)
So you mean I can out a K2 type screen to F2?
She is sooo cute
Jazz hands!
I love nerdy chicks.
