Because of the extremely high rate of development with certain bird babies, they can literally starve to death in a day if they get absolutely no nutrition. Remember, baby birds also get all of their fluid intake from what they eat, so they are missing out on everything. A day in the life of these birds at this stage of development is like a couple weeks in human time. Just think about an infant human baby not getting anything to eat or drink over that amount of time. Again, it might seem cruel, but these birds are designed by nature to NEED to eat a lot to compensate for their extremely high rate of calorie burn when they are at this stage!! Even missing a few feedings in a row in a day can make them so much weaker than their siblings that they can no longer compete with their siblings and, unless they get lucky and happen to get a feeding before they've gone to far down, they will die!! Again, it's the way nature has designed these birds because of how and where they live.

At this stage of growth, they are growing so rapidly that they can more than double their weight and size in a single day!! So they NEED every single bit of food they can get!! This double whammy of no calories and no fluids over the length of time it kept missing a feed was enough to weaken it to the point that it would really need to be lucky for it to get at least one feeding to give it at least enough strength to compete with it's sibling. A couple times, it almost got a feeding, but the other, now larger baby was able to muscle it's way in and get the feeding. Just look at how the difference in size was happening right in front of your eyes!! The one baby that was getting all of the feedings was growing at a normal rate for these species of birds and it was double the size of it's sibling that was not getting feedings. Unfortunately it did not get that one feeding it really needed. This is how nature works and it's not always pretty flowers and butterflies sometimes it's hornets and teeth!! This was actually an extremely well done video by a good photographer. He showed the whole of both sides of nature without editing out the harshness. Good job by the photographer!! 👍🙂
