Im loving Mérida after living here a while. Immersed myself in learning español and developed a close network of Yucatán friends and subsequently I get services that I need rapidly. Yes it is hot in Merida but when you think and speak positive, the universe brings blessings we take for granted. I seek inner peace for myself and seek to give back to those that are worthy around me. Be grateful for your blessings and those around you wherever you live.🎉

Don't get me wrong ... I love the place. This video was simply me reminding people to know themselves and to be very conscious of their decisions. It's not all fun and games (not just Merida, but any other place). My goal is to prepare people of what to expect. I assist with a lot of relocation services here and I see soo many people come and abruptly leave due to unrealistic expectations.

Good for you for taking the initiative to learn spanish. Considering spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, while english is the third most widely spoken language in the world. With the exception of Belize and Brazil, every country in Central America and South America primary language is spainish. Learning spanish will open new cultures for You. 👍👍

BEWARE: Cartess, I lived in Puerto Vallarta for 3 years where I built 6 houses. In the USA I am a real estate investor and I have owned several businesses. You do NOT need a Mexican partner to create a Mexican corporation. I strongly suggest that you maintain 100% control of your business and protect your ideas. Lawyers WORK FOR YOU and assist you in bringing your ideas to life! Lawyers are NOT business partners! Unless you know someone who happens to be a lawyer. My point is that I am very suspicious of any lawyer who tells you to give him a percentage of your business. And I'm sure he will expect a fee in addition to a part of your business. Visit several law firms with a reputation of dealing fairly with foreigners. Seek out larger law firms, not a one-man firm. The one-man firm is trying to make it just like you and they will rip you off. I have seen it happen. Move slowly when doing business in Mexico. Good Luck!

Every single person I know that left Merida left because of the heat. Some people I know that are still there want to leave because of the heat. Every state in Mexico is very different. After 2+ full years of living there we were ready to move on.
The Merida area is beautiful, we loved our time there other than the heat.

@@sandmors7998 beautiful! Many mornings and early evenings the interior of the home is very cold ! I had to walk around wrapped in a blanket! But 😔the chilly weather is a month or so at the most.

I grew up in Phoenix but this heat in Merida is next level. Feels like a hot wet blanket on me at all times. But it's still a small price to pay for how great Merida is.

That's the thing, is the trade-off worth it. I lived in NYC when it was nicknamed Kill City. You had to be very careful all the time, day and night, and no matter what neighbourhood you were in.
The subways are filthy and smelled like pee. Try that on a hot day.
People tried to rip you off all the time, and as far as rude goes, New Yorkers have it over everyone else in the world.
I loved every minute of the 20 years I spent there. Raised my son in the city, and it was great for him, too.
Oh, and it's super-expensive. To me, it was worth every penny.
The only thing that really worries me about Merida is the heat. I plan to travel to other parts of Mexico during the hottest months and otherwise stay in the house when it's really bad.
Great video again my brother. My wife and I decided to leave Playa Del Carmen but not because of the heat, it was due to the area not being very developed, the infrastructure, and the local Mexicans constantly ripping us off at every chance they got. Plus the rental prices were extremely high for the area and what it had to offer. We've been to Merida, Conkal, Progresso, Mexico City, and Puerto Vallarta. So far we prefer Mexico City overall.
The best thing we did was get our Temporary Residency which is very important. You should speak on that for sure.
Your parents educational achievements are impressive ! Both my parents had regrets at the end of their lives as well. Both wished to make travel a priority. I choose to live having as little regrets as possible! If you can make it happen, follow your passions!

I'm ready to come and be disappointed by Merida. Your content is very helpful. I have visited Merida several times, and lived there for 2 and a half months. I toured several other places in Mexico, and Merida is tugging my heart. So, I'll give her a chance to disappoint me. Then I get to go be disappointed somewhere else new! Like you said, the future ain't here! I'm not a tree; I can move!

Mister man, you on a right tangent. Merida is our go to place for health. I remember one expat here, he had a heart problem, He went to Merida to get a consult and he felt uncomfortable so he went back to Houston for the procedure instead.As he is getting rolled in on a gurney into the operating room, the masked doctor came out and said, "Nice to see you, my friend. I was afraid you wouldnt make the plane flight.. Houston always calls me in for procedures like this."

I have lived several places around different parts of Mexico and it's really the same everywhere, you have to be very patient and it can take many days to get a service person out and it's best to find someone that's qualified and not just someone that's just a general everything handyman.

Also, make sure when you'll get those generators to not have them right up against the house or near windows... you want to decrease the chances of carbon monoxide enter the home and poisoning you'll. You will not smell, you will not see it.. it makes you sleepy/tired and you won't wake up.... be careful with generators always...

This year really had me rethinking life here...this August will make two years this summer was brutal, its already hot and they say this is the hottest its been in 15 years. I feel I need a place somewhere else in the summer as well. The new direct flight to Atlanta is nice
Many of the things you outlined would be tackled with research. Language, heat and healthcare should be areas of priority when considering making a move. I can imagine wanting to see grandchildren and possibly desiring to return when health changes occur. I can understand the changing exchange rate of the peso. Money is a commodity that governs one’s way of life. The dollar losing value could mean return to the states, change the way you live or do what needs to be done, legally, to obtain employment. Great video….awesome nuggets.

You made good points! I think that if people do their homework before moving they will at least be mentally prepared for the move, then they have to actually adjust to life and the differences they know about when they get there. They need to give themselves time to get to know the area, time to learn (in person) the customs, etc. Otherwise, as you said, they are doomed to fail.
This is the same experience of many in west Indian islands, it’s called island time , things get done when they get done … people on a different timeline than North Americans

One of the questions that I have on the weather related concerns are how are the nationals who spent their lives there managing to keep up with the extreme heats, I’m sure since Merida has aa sizable elderly, and retirees population born and raised there they would have a lot of the same issues around heat as the expats have. Is it that they’re conditioned to it? Is it they live in facilities that have adequate AC accommodation that’s reliable? Asking because it cannot be unique to expats only but those nationals from Merida -are they moving solely based on 3-4 months of extremely hot and humid weather?
As far as the other concerns raised, it’s a risk when you uproot from the country of origin to a different one entirely from the one you lived most of your life in, but millions of people do it and many have due to persecution, war, tyranny, and so on. I think perspective needs to be a factor in the hangups people are finding there also but me not being there also is a valid argument. Economy wise, things are not that great in the US either, and cost of living is definitely not. If you aren’t well off already or have job security in the US the situation is likely still worse here. Health care well yea you can argue you’d have access to it in the US more easily but there’s a lot going on with general health care systems and another type of influx going on in the US that I don’t think expats and even some still here in the US are paying enough attention to regarding our own health care system and the burdens put on it by a significant event happening with the US
I also saw some content on the analysis of why the CoL in Merida has increased, what factors are driving it, and by whom is the population increases tied to. The answers were surprising if I’m going off expats in general. The individual whom has purchased property in Merida with their own means stated that the property they acquired actually wasn’t in a community that was impacted and that the property was in very bad order to begin with (it was a fixer upper), he also indicated that while yes Merida is growing, it isn’t driven primarily by expats migrations, it was actually nationals from other locales that are coming into Merida -while others say Mexican nationals from there are moving out of Merida so that’s conflicting info. It’s also plain to see, CoL isn’t so good anywhere in the world irrespective of what the standard CoL was even 2-3 years ago. So while some expats feel they have a better chance of having a quality of life outside of the US, the reality is no one is escaping the pains of decades of printing money and the after effects of printing so much money. It drives inflation and it drives the devaluation of most currencies in a global sense. Still you’re going to come out better outside the US in a lower cost nation than one with an already equivalent cost of living to the US of the past four years or ten max

I used to work for a company Tripp Lite Manufacturing which was bought out by Eaton. They make back-up power systems. They were a hit in the Dominican Republic where the power goes out notoriously. They use a bank of marine batteries that get charged by the power company on their on-time. When power goes out, their system immediately picks up the load of (up to) the entire house. Better load capacity than the solar batteries option

How long do they run on a charge?
Right now, I have a tri-fuel generator and use natural gas. It will run forever (although its expensive).
I'm not sure, but does the EcoFlow work in a similar way? You can charge it off house power and then when it goes out, switch to the generator (I may be very wrong on this).
Every time I see a video like this it remakes me think if I can move abroad.
You can definintely do it and should try ... Visit some where for a month or two or three and give it a shot. Just be prepared but by all means, give it a go.

These observations are real! I'm in full agreement that it starts with knowing who we are before we select a place to live. I'm loving it here and have been very careful to hire folks I can trust to help when things go sideways...because they will! Also, every Mediterranean country I've lived in has a slower pace and "I'll get it done when I'm available" mindset. And lets not talk about the tropical island I'm from!! 😂😂

I live in SW Florida. The weather is similar HOT & HUMID, so I don't think it will bother me as much as a lot of people that don't have summer year round. Our summer was brutal last year, worse than others. And I can't stand being in my office or restaurants or stores with the air blowing...I like hot but know when to get out of it as well.
Someone mentioned that Merida has a different sizzling white-hot humid filled by 10:30 am.
By 9:30 the heat index makes it feel like 101-2 degrees. PLUS the humidity is around 50, 60% even higher.
So can see for yourself. You will love the City!!!

Im Mexican and as Mexican a know every State is completely different, I will never go to live to Merida, I live in US but I want to go back to my country but I want to go to live in San Miguel de Allende the weather is different ans peacefully..... San Miguel is a beautiful, very expensive colonial city in the state of Guanajuato. That city is protected by UNESCO as Cultural Heritage of Human Kind. Weather is perfect year round. I am in awe every time I visit. Mérida’s only drawback is the weather.

Good one! I enjoyed the story about your mom & dad. I love Merida, first time I visited in 2006, it weirdly felt like I belonged there...like i came home. The power of T'ho! Every city has its issues. Just hotta decide which issues you Can and Cannot tolerate. I tried life in Merida and Oaxaca, and even though I could not imagine full time in either, I love them equally, but now have my eye on some CDMX winter stays.

I live in the states right now and to get something repaired in my house is a nightmare. Either they never come, they come give you a quote and never come back to do the job or they don't do it right and you have to hire another person and hope they do it right. So what's happening there is universal.
I live in the states where I am from, and my experience is the polar opposite. Hands down, professional repair persons come prompt, diagnose, repair, collect their fees, and go.

We've lived in Merida for nine years. We own our house. Great neighborhood, U.S. born and raised and my grandparents are Mexican nationals so I speak Spanish. We love Merida but......because of the heat, rains, constantly maintaining the house and some things you mentioned and didn't mention we decided this past spring to finally put our house on the market and move elsewhere in Mexico. To sum up how I feel about Merida, in my own words. It's like being madly in love with someone but they make your life hell with physical and mental abuse and then apologize by showering you with beautiful gifts.

@@MoveAbroadandThrive We're looking at beach houses in Progreso, Chicxulub, Telchac Puerto and Chabihau. We're also looking at Puebla, Mexico to be nearer to the mountains. I was an avid hiker back in California and Colorado. We'll see.
Just curious why you chose to relocate to Merida, Mexico instead of Medellin, or other cities in Colombia? The weather is better. The cost of living is lower. And a lot of the other things you complained about are better or non-existent in Colombia. I subscribed to your "Escape To Medellin" TH-cam channel years ago (when it was still available) and you sold me on moving to Colombia. Then you end up moving to Mexico.
Sounds like an opportunity to provide these services to the area that provide excellent customer service and acquire real estate to rent out to targetted expats if possible as well.
Definitely a market to make this idea work.

This is a calling…I’m surrendering to that, no complaints, just surrender and BE…if NO-thing happens…it was a beautiful experience to courageously take a solo trip to the unknown and SURRENDER the “old me” to the culture, people and environment…without complaint about nothing…let’s see what happens then…………..I would just be SOULgrateful.❤️

Could be the beginning of conflict between you and the landlord and cause problems for you.

@@MoveAbroadandThrive ha ha! I agree with fixing stuff if you need to. I'm just saying that I wouldn't expect that the landlord will be ethical and take it out of your rent.
Long story short: I moved into a new place in Chelem sometime last year. On the first day the landlord and the person who found the place for me (a local and "friend" of the landlord's family) discussed with the landlord things that needed to be fixed, like electric work, door, etc. It was a new house but needed some repairs. I WASN'T part of this conversation.
The guy does all the work the next day. He goes to ask the landlord for payment and the landlord told him to ask ME! I give him the money only because I saw him as a nice guy who'd been helpful when I needed- I paid him well every time he helped me.
If it was someone else I probably wouldn't have given them anything. I just didn't want to see someone I considered a nice guy get screwed over by this landlord.
As I have encountered countless times here lack of basic ethics is a big issue here, and you never know when you're going to run into it.

Sounds like an adventure, it sounds like where I'm currently living and working in Trinidad Colorado. The community is primarily Native American and old Spanish now with white Texans gentrifying.

It's a 22% drop from 210 pesos for $10 , if it is 160 pesos for $10 dollars now. This drop requires investing in stocks or crypto to counterattack this percentage rate drop. Here in the US, inflation is high, but I always manage to be above a 20 % inflation rate. Bonk crypto, for instance, has been returning up to 100% of any investments. This return can happen within 45 days . Of course, there are other investments to counterattack any inflation rate. Blessings.
In nashville tn the dollar general is open sometimes and sometimes not because people aren't coming into work my new dishwasher I got in april is still broke I am living the merida life while paying american dollars and it isn't cheap living in nashville tn so why not live where it is cheaper in mexico I speak spanish as best as I can because I am in their country not mine and I expect english while in america so it is only right that I speak spanish and all the time while in mexico I am tired of the high prices and lack of courtesy in america I visit merida alot and have seen everything you are talking about and tn isn't any better america is going down hill fast I do very well here in tn and soon I will say bye forever

I want to bring a good/accurate translator device when I move there, and obviously continue learning Spanish. But will Mexicans talk with me using a device? OR think I'm not trying? I actually learn a lot of words and phrases from using it....because once you know it you remember it.
Jose Arteaga advertised that device on his channel so I guess people accept it.
Also, someone from El Salvador, I think, tried to hold up a bank in Texas, I believe, using one. He wasn't successful, but they knew what he wanted.
I plan to get one. Not so much to have conversations, but to order in restaurants and buy stuff in stores.
Its one thing to learn the local language, its altogether another thing to LEARN THE LOCAL CUSTOMS!!!
The Yucatan people are far more Mayan than "Mexican", which is comparable to the differences between being Mexican and being Puerto Rican.
