- I found LISA The Painful in my Steam library and remembered really liking the music in it when I played it back in the day. Turns out it was a lot better than I remembered! I still can't believe this game was recommended to me as being "similar to Undertale." - I ended up loving it regardless for very different reasons but people have a strange way of comparing games.
I remember them being compared to a lot when Undertale came out. I think it has to do with them both being inspired by Earthbound (SuperBunnyHop has a good video called “Undertale, LISA, and Their Earthbound Connection that you HAVE to check out!!). Oh, and thanks a ton for checking out my video!
I agree that while both games are terrific, they really couldn't be any different from each other in tone, mechanics, and overall game direction.
Both are like Earthbound-like, they use a similar style of that old and beloved Nintendo franchise.
They are objectively similar in Genre and Inspiration, but it definitely stops there and isnt a very helpful comparison given the obviously smaller target audience for Lisa
I think it's because the Lisa series is so different to most games (tonally at least), so people reach for a game with similar inspirations to compare it to when recommending it

I just wanted to point out, that because the music changes so abruptly. You feel like you've traveled farther than you actually have. Like "oh this is new".
Ooooo that's a really good point! LISA does feel like a HUGE game, so I guess the music kind of played into that illusion.

Sometimes when you enter a tunnel that goes from point A to point B, you can hear the theme of either the area you just left or the one you are about to enter, almost like actually reaching a new place that looks way different than the one you were in

Wait what!? That's extremely insightful advice to any composer trying to make something memorable in a piece of music!
When context and tonality of a piece of media is combined with a sudden theatrical change in the music featured throughout, it can become extremely memorable! I still remember how the final boss from Undertale made a great use of swapping audio tracks throughout the fight!
Goxy Oh, I definitely agree! I guess I expected the video to be a little bit longer based off the script I wrote, which is why I said it wasn’t the most insightful conclusion. Undertale’s final boss is also SUPER memorable, but I’ll save that for another video!

Probably relating to the name and how the name relates to Brad and Marty. A big thing I absolutely love about LISA is it really isn't afraid to break a norm I'm a way that isn't quite as romanticized- it doesn't tackle suicide by subtle hints and representations, the title screen is LISA hung from a post. It doesn't hide the abuse themes with gentle wording and yet more representations- half the characters in the game outright admit to not caring about consent and only in fangames do ANY characters even question her age. The same can be said for its music- it rarely follows conventional music theory and most of it doesn't even care about sounding good, it's to put you in a state of mind. Air Raid or Dandy Boy for example are barely even music, just sirens and snares to assault your ears and get you on edge for a difficult fight.
This games soundtrack needs more attention. Hell the creation of this game as a whole needs more attention. It’s an amazing miracle of game development, a labor of love made practically entirely by one guy.
I absolutely FELL IN LOVE with LISA, after years of putting it off, and the music was always such a great fit for it. Offbeat at times and at others disturbing, and at many times, just plain good. I think the music fits the world of LISA so perfectly, and I really loved this video.
I'd been thinking about playing this game... with your endorsement, I think I'll give it a go!

I agree with a lot of your points! To me what makes a soundtrack great has a lot to do with just how unique it is, either through composition or instrumentation. And LISA games *absolutely* impress me in that regard. Great video! Hope your channel gets some recognition!
Oh most definitely! It was pretty fun going down the rabbit hole of how dingaling composed some of the songs in FL studio; I even remember there being a steam thread talking about exactly what presets he used in some synthesizers.
And I appreciate it so so so much, It’s growing steadily and I’ll keep on uploading until it does!!

My favorite part of the joyful and painful soundtracks are the fan songs they inspired, some of them are so good.
I actually hadn’t really looked at ANY of the fan games before I started this video. Such a fun thing to dive into, maybe i’ll do a separate video on them in the future!
@@takune I highly recommand checking the bizzare phenomen that is Lisa's fangame fandom, some people will mostly recommend you that the Lisa the Pointless and Lisa the Hopeful are the best to check out...but there are so many gems that people just need to expirience, like Lisa the Timeless or all the Pointless fangames. I mean the fangames of a fangame. Like the Timeless has a great atmosphere and music is phenomenal, and a fan made expansion for Lisa the Pointless called The Schoolar of Wibur Sin Edition, which expands the games gameplay from 6 hours to over a 12 if you are willing to explore. And if you are not going to play any of those I recommend to check their music for a fun experience.

Great timing on the video, Austin's recent uploading of the Soundtrack is something I look for everyday. In all honesty I'm still looking for a game that is going to emotionally wreck me the same way Lisa did. Such a great game. It's one of my all time favs.

The mechanic of there being an immediate fade when transitioning areas truly made this game really tense throughout, most of the time I was on edge and ready for... well... anything, really.

I think one important point of Lisa soundtrack is the weird tone of it, equal to the game.
The game is weird in a lot of ways, some songs are very much musical gibberish but it's the kind of thing you expect from such bizarre enemies and situations. Tbh I ended up listening to some of the tunes bc I really liked 'em and even fangames are capable of imitating the same style of music from the original games which is honestly impressive.
I never thought the guy would've made the entire OST from a trial version of FL studio, it just shows that the more the limitations, the bigger your creativeness.
Not exactly a musician but actually I agree with you not gonna lie here I enjoy how you talked about the part where lisa enters a room and the music just stops and then pointing out how it builds tension
and funny enough I was just about to comment on something like that especially with how weird lisa in general the soundtrack just adds to it *chefs kis*
oh and whats alot intresting is how it reminds me a little bit mother 3 : Master porkys theme a little bit

i have played the game way more times than i'd like to admit
But the one song that will always get me is when you get to the russian roulette segment where it'll just give you this very almost jolly soundtrack only to then throw you into this dead silence with the only sound being the empty clicks of the empty cylinder or the loud deafening sound of the revolver taking the life of a teammate or the enemy

The game draws you in with its dark humour and then leaves you going wow. Then maybe crying. But I still listen to the soundtrack for this when playing other online games.

I wish I fully understood what you said, I consider the OST to be good as it comes out of what is usually in an Rpg (orchestra / 8bits). Besides that they are pretty good to come from a simple program.

People what does he mean by "entire sections that are risky from a design standpoint"
Most of the major choices are inherently risky by design as they permenantly make you lose something such as Russian roulette where you’re nearly guaranteed to lose multiple party members. Most games would give you an easy way out where you don’t face any long lasting consequences but Lisa makes you except your choices and continue on with them
