The hot wire can be white as well (don't mix it up with the neutral or your fooked) mark or tape all wires and take a picture before removing old switch. Get a multi meter and a ac voltage detector. Make sure your working in a dry area. Don't be touching anything metal when when in contact with possible live wires even when the breaker is off. .
When the circuit is on and the wires out of the wall not connected, the hot wire reads approximately 120 Vac. What about the load wire? Should it be no voltage?
