  • In this third installment of the Peloponnesian War podcast, we take a look at life after Pericles and the years 428 and 427 BC. Leaders of Mytilene's oligarchy have decided that now is the time to leave the Athenian-led alliance. The conflict in Plataea also finally comes to an end while another bloody civil conflict between factions in Corcyra gets out of hand and shocks the Greek world. At the end of it, the Athenians head west to see if they can exert their influence in southern Italy and Sicily. The war is really heading up and who knows where the fires will spread to next!

    I’ve watched a lot of your videos and what I see few commenters praising you for is your speaking voice. There’s a trend toward fast and loud speaking on the internet in general and TH-cam especially, and it’s refreshing to hear someone who puts thought and purpose into their words

  • @johnnysmall

    Thucydides’ speech that he has the Plataeans say always makes me sad.
    “Will it not be deemed a monstrous thing that the Lacedaemonians should desolate Plataea; that they, whose fathers inscribed the name of the city on the tripod at Delphi in token of her valor, should for the sake of the Thebans blot out the whole people from the Hellenic world?”
    That line always hits me. There were a lot of plataeans that had fled before then of course, but this passage for me reminds you that the Persian wars were not not so far off for these people and remembered with pride especially in sites like plataea where the famous battle took place. And “they whose fathers” fought with and led the Hellenes to victory should now be destroying them? That is what Thucydides feels is monstrous. And the older men whose polies took part in the wars (especially plataea as Herodotus mentions them being at Marathon as well) would likely have seen it that way too. Those who remembered a different Sparta, and a different Greek world entirely almost. And after Corcyra, things would only get worse.

      Yes, you're correct, it's a great book that I have and had read a couple of years back. I suppose that along with Thucydides (Landmark Thucydides to be specific) I'm using Kaplan's work because I feel it's more in chronological order than Hanson's. Yeah, it seems that geopolitical strife is nothing new and playing dirty is not new as well. It is so interesting that powerful political alliances could be created at such a stage of human history. I myself am a fan of Sparta but if I were a small king of a small city I would join Athens. They seem more reasonable, or more democratic, on the surface at least. Surely, Athenian politicians also "enjoyed" back-stabbing, stealing and intrigues as much as any other ones at the time

    This video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix myself a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm a really shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I could introduce myself. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she had a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person. I wanted the best for her and I harbored no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seemed happy with her boyfriend, so I didn't bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it. I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already since I first saw her. Besides, I am quite happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wanted to live some other life without me in it, so I said, "Okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness." My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally couldn''t take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, "you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get myself a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got so distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video." She said, "You know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer." So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.

    • @roan2288
      @roan2288 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of what you´d understand as a 21th century man as being´democracy´ would be totally alien to any democrat during thinq time period. Secondly what even is the reasoning to call the peloponnesians ´fascist´? Fascism is an enlightenment ideology just like the democracy you'd think of. Can you only look at historical events via a twisted modern day lens of good vs evil that even a child would find crude? Also the idea of a greek nation also did only come about after the enlightenment and it´s child called nationalism reared it´s head in Europe.

    • @LuisAldamiz
      @LuisAldamiz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roan2288 - That's a patronizing statement, more so when I'm a 20th century man: I was already in my 30s when the year 2K came.
      Athenian democracy was much more democratic than our modern so-called "democracies", where popular assemblies and direct citizen participation are non-existent (and thus I don't call them democracies, but plebisicitarian dictatorships, Switzerland and Rojava are about the only ones which are democratic, more or less, all the rest are police regimes with a mediocre electoral pretext).
      I can accept your complain about "fascism", when after all the first widespread fascism, namely Christianity, would not be adopted in many centuries. However they were all in the Platonist-Socratic extremist anti-democracy fold, the exact same ideology that all fascists and reactionaries through history used to defend their plutocratic privileges, so well: it's only so much of a simplification or modernization of speech.
      I do not accept AT ALL your patronizing denial of ethnic nations in terms historical. One thing is "nation state" (i.e. state with a nationalist ideology) and another thing nation or people-nation, ethnos in Greek, which is very clearly not just objectively existent in antiquity (not just the Greeks, the Etruscans, the Aquitani, etc. all were very much aware of their ethnicity and were organized politically to some extent or another within such ethno-national parameters) but often were key political actors as such nations, even if fragmente in smaller city-states. The Greeks for example fought the Persians as such nation, the Aquitani were clearly confederated and fought as one nation, the Dacians did the same and of course the Latins also did the same most of the time. The Carthaginian empire similarly was founded on absorbing other ethnically similar (phoenician or canaanite) cities, Egypt was of course ethnically homogeneous (and the rare exceptional instances who were out of the ethnic norm, were encouraged to become Egyptian or suffer the consequences), we see that even in China and we even see ethnicities (nations) emerging from the homogenizing power of states, not just in modern France but in ancient Mali as well (nations like the Mandinka or the Bakongo still exist to this very day even if the polities that formed then have long ago vanished).
      Things do change but not as much as your patronizing modernist arrogance imagines.
