For up to five minutes I thought the Orchestra was playing another piece, or the YT team put the name of another. Cheerful and playful. Happy. Not a horrendous child-eater Slavic witch! But then Antonín changes the mood.
This Orchestra is Wunderbar!
Das WDR Funkorchester spielt immer auf Weltniveau, wunderbar!!!!!!👏👏👏👍🙏🏻🌷
One of K. J. Erben's macabre Czech folk tales brought to life by Dvorak.
Of all the witches in Slavic folklore, this specimen is unique. Instead of midnight,
she shows up at high noon, frightening the hell out of the children at play, not to mention
their parents. (See also: Dvorak's The wood dove, The water goblin, The golden spinning wheel.)
A delightful performance of this sprightly Dvořák piece. I'm very pleased to see so many younger musicians in this fine ensemble, which gives me hope for the future of great orchestral music such as this.
Thank you!
We're happy that you like our performance 😊
The Noonday Witch, Op. 108, is a symphonic poem composed by Antonin Dvořák. The work is sometimes described as a movement in sonata form or as a small symphony in which four parts can be distinguished. The symphonic poem in itself draws its psychological and musical unity from a literary, pictorial source or any other medium likely to stimulate the imagination. It is a completely idiomatic genre of 19th century romantic art. Inspired by Czech folklore, the composition is based on popularly inspired texts by Karel Jaromír Erben, including « The Noonday Witch ». If the piece does not integrate the verses of the poet, Dvořák nevertheless followed them closely, he even gave the themes the rhythm of the versification. The composer takes special care of the narrative details, whereas in general the symphonic poem is attached to the overall climates, which has the effect of fragmenting the form. The tale: A mother who cannot overcome her child's whims and anger threatens him to call the midday witch, and she appears. The mother defends her child. When the father comes in from work in the fields, he finds the mother unconscious and her son dead. As aforementioned, this musical sonnet is a traditional four part structure condensed into a single tract: 1st movement (Allegro): mother with child. 2nd movement (Andante sostenuto): arrival of the Noon Witch. 3rd movement (Scherzo): dance of the Noon Witch. 4th movement (Andante): father’s return and conclusion. In the instrumentation of his orchestral works, Dvořák had thus far essentially worked within the Beethovian or Brahmsian tradition. But, for his symphonic poems, he chose to enhance his orchestral palette with shades of French Impressionism. *Lucien*

@@WDRKlassik Thanks friend 😘
Thanks for the comprehensive analysis.
Late in life Dvorak chose several gruesome tales for subjects.
These little symphonic gems are a wonderful "coda" to the great symponies.
@@johkkarkalis8860 Thank you very much dear friend. Indeed, his little symphonies with a morbid subject are however adorable. Except Czech folklore: I tried to find the origin of these inspirations of Dvořák but in vain? This derives from his distant youth or from his life: mystery! Sincerely. *Lucien*
@@LucienMarine Again, many thanks for the performance of a composer incapable of writing a "bad" note
Absolutely love this work, can’t understand why it isn’t performed more often. There is so much more to the great Czech composer than the ubiquitous “New World” symphony (which is inferior to the magnificent 7th or 8th) Thanks so much for the upload, wonderful interpretation from the conductor and of course playing of the highest standard.
Thank you!
We're glad that you like our rendition 😊
