UPDATE: The cover was replaced and the greenhouse is as good as new. I've been starting seedlings in it and also growing herbs and greens in it. Works great for that.
Isnt It interesting how we have all this plastic in the world that doesnt degrade but when you have something that you dont want to degrade or do so as quickly it does..
If you cant find another cover for it, you can make a pattern out of the old one, and with the clear plastic they sell at the dollar store, cut out the shapes that fit around it or even glue it onto the existing one. I luv your babies, and enjoy your videos. Stay safe, healthy and happy Mama LF!
We had a greenhouse similar (if not identical) to the one shown here and it only lasted about a week but that was because of some strong winds that came up before it was loaded down with plants, etc. I recovered the plastic with only minor damage but several of the frame pieces were bent or broken.
Tip: Before purchasing one of these temporary greenhouses, check with vendor to see if they have cover placements. If the cover is cheaper than replacing the entire greenhouse, and most of the times it is...may want to go with that vendor instead. UPDATE: Just noticed your comment about you replacing your cover. Awesome!
I bought one similar to this one, but the wind was so intense I could tell the plastic wouldn't stand up long, so I took the plastic off and used the shelving for herbs and other plants that needed more attention. I purchased a 4X6 real greenhouse and have been enjoying that.
Just found your interesting video on the mini greenhouse. I’m moving in January and have been looking at purchasing one of these for my first garden property and so glad I found your video by accident as it was very informative regarding the disintegration of the plastic over time but also that a few subscribers had some useful tips for reusing rather purchasing another cover. 🙏🏽🥂👍🏾🇬🇧
Go to walmart or lowes and buy a roll of clear plastic to put over the top to prevent this, also helps keep heat in.. Mine did the same thing. I have a cheap tarp from Big Lots over the top of my new one now that leaves and limbs and hard rain is with us.
I also purchased one and it only lasted one season. I put it up in November and it was destroyed by May. Less than 1 year. The sun dried out and cracked all the joints that held the poles together and the zipper ripped. It you just spend $50 and want to try out a greenhouse and see if this is a hobby you maybe interested in. Then go ahead and purchase one. Just don't expect a long life. We are using the frame as a pattern and building our own greenhouse with PVC and UVresistant greenhouse plastic. I discovered I enjoyed the hobby and ready to move onto the "next step"
Yeah i got one and actually have it on mt back patio thats enclosed. Have grow lights to supplement. The rain is acidic and ate it away. You can cover it eith a tarp and remember to line your bottom upnwith bricks if outside.
Yooo, Good Morning Ma'am! Thank You For The Review! You have a lovely voice, kind of calming..Anyways, I was pondering you have a new cover and perhaps try a spray on wipe type car wax as a test..It should help with UV and help water run off and protect it from breaking down so fast..Turtle Wax Ice Seal N Shine, look it up on youtube it's not pricey and may help a cover last 3 years if you apply it twice a year, before winter and mid spring.....They last 2 years before disintegrating in Sydney AUS, so I would say snow and ice, water, play a big part in degradation..
Best things you can do is, buying some plastic sheets from Lowes of some sorts to cover it. You can cut it to fit ; the thicker the better. This only if you cannot reorder the original one.
very helpful. Want to use it for cactus. Yes i plan to take it apart for the summer/autumn. I wanted it to protect against rain in winter/spring. Maybe in subsequent years I can buy bubble wrap. The frame is still good right?
Will this mini greenhouse protect the potted plants when temperature goes down to 30’f ? I just want to use it to protect my potted plants when the temp goes down to freezing temp and then take the out the next day. Will this be good for that? Thanks
i have same issue starting with my two smaller ones covering raised beds. this is only 2nd season, it was stored 6months. $89 each, i had hoped for long use, but now that i see your video, perhaps i can figure out a solution before next season. thank you
I've had these greenhouses for a number of years and yes, the plastic will disintegrate with time. Buy a new cover. OR put out $2-4,000 for the same size greenhouse made of cedar wood and glass. I replace my covers every year and the cost is generally $20 to $30 per cover.
Just a thought but there's a somewhat clear/opaque Flexseal spray I found at Home Depot/Lowes. If I sprayed it on while it's new, would that help in it lasting longer? Anyone know anything about that idea?
Just a idea. What about removing the plastic for the winter. Have been doing this on all my greenhouses and have them now for over three years. These are not made for winter. I mean snow and ice.
What state are you in? I am in Northern California and it gets hot in the summer and want to see if your in the same zone as I am and I know plastic like that will break down faster in my heat.
(thanks) 2021 in the UK and I just bought one for about twice the price, looks like the same sort of kit though. Disappointing that it deteriorated so quickly. I'm hoping that our sun isn't as harsh as your location, but in any case, I think our harsh Winters & high winds are going to be tough on my "tent". I had a little one and it didn't last, so, to be fair, I wasn't optimistic, but I figured at that price I could live with it being 'temporary' to see if I will actually be capable of using/manging a greenhouse properly enough before I invest in a real one. I had built a glass & aluminium greenhouse at a previous house and, sadly, although I went to a lot of trouble to ensure the base was level and concreted into place - I missed one very important thing: The corners needed to be square. (of course they do! - silly me!) Consequently it wasn't till I was fitting the very last pane of glass that I realised I had made the base a parallelogram, so there was a gap. The whole thing wasn't truly squared off at 90 degrees. So, the wind got in that tiny little triangular sliver of space and it was a losing battle as it took out one pane after another till I decided it was a lost cause and opted to knock it down and bury it where it stood. I was gutted, because I'd always wanted my own greenhouse and I'd worked so hard and spent so much money on it. Things were starting to grow too. Months later, I paid a guy to help me do some garden work, and, when I was out one day, he dug up the greenhouse, thinking he was doing me a favour, so now I had all this broken glass and an aluminium frame to get rid of. :((( I figure if I get a year out of the plastic one, then I'll be a happy bunny, but I read some reviews and, once again, the wind is my biggest fear. As for re-covering it, I will check for replacement covers, and research 'spray-on' solutions, but I'm wondering if certain types of plastic block UV light. I've found some wonderful stuff for taping over my inside home windows as "Triple Glazing" (which you can google) and it is marvellous stuff, because you secure it into place with tape - then heat it with a hair dryer (or warm air heater) and it shrinks taut and looks fantastic, it goes tight as a drum and the finish is superb. I put it on all my windows and save a fortune in heating bills. Only thing is it says somewhere "helps prevent furniture & carpet fading - because it cuts down UV light". However, if my cover starts to disintegrate to just the green mesh - I might try this stuff as a cheap fix. I've always wondered if I could cut up plastic drinks bottles (cut off top & bottom, slice lengthways and unroll, then iron flat) and glue or join them somehow as a cheap 'glazing' solution. What I am actually thinking of is attempting to create a "Geodesic Dome" by making lots of panels that will fit together with wing nuts. The 'plan' (ha-ha-ha "plan" LoL) is to figure out how to make 5 sided panels indoors as a DIY project basically in my spare time - like knitting squares to make a quilt. Then have a stack of them I can assemble to make the dome in the spring. Remembering my small one, I'm also thinking maybe giving the frame a coat of tough paint might also help, because the original paint just flaked off, then the tubes got rusty and it is basically going to be some spare shelving for my walk in plastic greenhouse or I will have to throw it away. I'd rather have paid a bit more and got a product that might last than have bought a "disposable" greenhouse in today's world when resources are at a premium it doesn't make sense to "Buy Cheap - Buy Twice" as my old Boss always used to say. Shame, because I've started loads of seeds and was really looking forward to erecting my new greenhouse tomorrow, so that has kind of disheartened me. Nevertheless, I'm a realist and, while I hope for the best - I like to understand the worst case scenario and be prepared. So, thanks for taking the trouble to share.
That platic is just crazy hideous to a place where plants are meant to grow. This company really profited at $80 avg by using 50 cent plastic. Shop vac the rest of it off the cover before taking the cover off. Just an idea if there is a new cover in the future, coat the outside with a UV blocking spray. But then the plants may not get the full light spectrum they might need. Maybe it will last 2 1/2 seasons. Id guess they expect it to be taken down before summer.
From the pattern of disintegration, I think you are right that it's UV damage. Fortunately, plants don't need UV, though the total amount of visible light might decrease slightly with the spray. In the southwest desert, most plastic is destroyed in a few months of summer sun, and UV resistant tarps last about a year. I guess it's not surprising that even in the NE sunlight disintegrates plastic. If UV spray blocks most UV, that should help.
Wow. Definitely will not waist my money on this product. I was very close to buying one out of inspiration but after you showing the truth definitely an avoid.
You should’ve took off the cover and rolled it up during spring/ summer and set it back up for winter then you would have still had a nice greenhouse lasting longer the uv rays beat up a traditional greenhouse poly the same way it comes down to how well you take care of it.
Where should I put it after I take it down? Perhaps you'd like to store it for me since I have no room for it. In addition, one of the reasons I got this greenhouse was to use it during the winter months like I have been using it right now and this winter.

I recommend to use this kind of a non UV-protected greenhouse inside a decent real greenhouse to keep seedlings warm in winter or spring.

You can possibly buy transparent Perspex panels and attach to the framework. It may cost more but you can use what’s left of it.
M C great idea!
The plastic disintegrates but it doesn't really break down. It stays in the environment and enters the food chain and ultimately in our own food.
Too true.
Sadly yes 😿

I recently lined mine with some shade cloth as the sun in Australia can be intensely hot even in spring!
What if you put plastic wrap on the inside as insulation? Would the plastic break off then?
