The thing people who have lived their whole lives in cushy privilege don't understand is that very poor people can make the best of bad conditions, and tight happy communities can grow out of places like this. You call it a squalid hellhole because it feels good to look down on other people rather than confront the fact that people can be strong and happy despite not having the comforts you enjoy and the things you value.

Seriously, this was a popular travel show on the BBC? Is this really the same Alan Whicker that was awarded a CBE from the Queen? They didn't speak to a single Chinese person. It's thirty minutes of British colonizers trying to civilize those heathen Chinese, with a dash of an old guy hitting on every White woman he see's. I really hope the rest of Whicker's show wasn't like this...

The walled city was a shithole though. There's another documentary on TH-cam by some germans, where you can see all the live rats, dead rats, cockroaches, mold, people smoking while preparing food, child labour, water running everywhere, stuff falling from the ceiling everywhere, toilets and kitchen sinks placed one meter apart. There was no consideration given to hygiene or working conditions at all. Some guy cut his finger off but was still working 12 hours a day with a bandaged hand, cutting up noodles. There was a kindergarten right in the middle, with no windows or ventilation, only a ceiling fan blowing the stale air around.
That's not normal. This was not a place anyone would live if they could avoid it.

This has to be one of the worst documentaries I've ever watched and sadly about a topic I'm really interested in. The presentation was atrocious, did he really have to be this patronising? He made no effort in hiding the fact that he viewed himself as superior to the poor people of the walled city and his interactions with the British girls were borderline creepy.
Furthermore, the documentary made absolutely no effort to show the life from the perspective of the people who lived there. Absolutely hated that two third of the entire documentary was about the drug addict salvation thing, which in itself, was a pretty important aspect of the Walled city, but nonetheless didn't really deserve to be blatantly the center focus of the whole documentary. Finally there were little to no actual, awe inspiring, captivating footage of the walled city that you'd expect to see in documentaries like these.

I have to correct you on one bit--he was straight up CREEPER creepy. He asked a woman working with an interesting religious movement helping drug addicts in the area across the world that he'd come to document whether or not she had a BOYFRIEND. And then asked the next one, the noticeably bigger woman, about her DIET. They're both so obviously uncomfortable, and he's so creepy, and so obviously interested in connecting with them not just in a pervy way but, in a continuation of his condescending attitude, also in a kind of possessive 'western woman remind creep of home must cling' way. 'Not like Sheffield!' Yeah no fuck.
I'm horrified by the 'reporter', and that's without forgetting that I'm viewing this through the lens of the past and that things are different. He's fucking creepy in any decade in any city. I bet he used this to make himself sound big to other reporters later: "Well I covered the Kowloon Walled City, yep, went right in and talked to the locals!" What I find unbelievable is that the editor thought this was OK too. Ugh. The Past Was The Worst.

This doc kind of represents the British mindset perfectly, out of touch, acting superior while knowing nothing and making no effort to know anything about the countries it's exploiting. I agree, I think it should not have focused so much on the addicts, the video starts off with a tour in the walled city and is much more interesting. then after like 10 minutes we get lumbered with the drug dealers which isn't as fun, but it's still a rare insight into the slum. I just wish more time was spent walking round the city with the Aussie, he seemed to know his way around there.

Another good example of POV issues.
To the viewpoint of a gweilo, crimes, poverty, lack of social facilities, and the people's living conditions are the norms for documentaries about slums. Be it Kowloon Wall City or Rio de Jaineiro, or maybe Mumbai. This has almost become a cliche that if you do not touch such themes, the director would remiss.
On the other hand, I can fully understand how HK people feel about the KL Wall city, a place where many of HK's people started their life - they escaped from communist turmoil in Mainland China, not without struggles, and started their new life in HK, so their hard-working spirit, their determination to earn a place in HK (I think, a typical example would be Tseng Tsou Chou, King of Kowloon ), etc.
Anyway, I still feel it is good to have a documentary where I can see how KL Walled City really looked like.

Yes after the 5 minute mark the video focuses on the drug centre ran by Jackie Pullinger, this is far less interesting than how the film starts, I too would rather have been taken on a tour around the city by the Aussie, they touch on some interesting subjects and he shows us some interesting parts of the city, whereas the girls in the drug centre just keep speaking about how Jesus is saving the drug addicts.
Nevertheless, it's still a rare insight into the city, and people with any interest on the city regardless will appreciate any footage based in it. Plus since the Kowloon walled city ceases to exist, we have to go with what we have unfortunately, and beggars can't be choosers I guess.

Kind of funny he's looking down on the people here but the reason they lived in these conditions was because his country's drug pushing imperialistic and colonialism ways forced on the generation's before. If he was a smart as he acted he would of had a bit of sympathy for them. To me this is one of the most interesting architectural structures ever built. man, i thought this was gonna be an actual documentary about the daily life in Kowloon. Instead it's just the White Man telling the Orientals to be better and believe in a God that doesn't care about them unless they convert. I mean, I know it's from 1980, but damn. All these people are awful. No wonder he got chased out the first time. If you want an accurate depiction of Kowloon, please read the book by Greg Girard. The Christian 'Saviours" were in it for their own self interest. So condescending and gross.

Why is the interviewer directly behind the Sheffielder. Such an odd and unnerving way to talk to someone. I'm fascinated by the Walled City. is constrained by his personal engagement, but derives from the people he connected with who were vividly connected to others.
Its a shame he didn't look for more, but in a way his disengagement highlights their engagement. Andrew Callahan would have known everything about the area from local rappers within a day.

Literally could not have picked a worse TV presenter to send in to this incredible place. All he does is scoff and talk down about everything and everyone. He literally refers to it as "such an awful place". Doesn't even seem to try and find the beauty and mystique in it. This whole documentary just wreakes of old-fashioned self-perceived British superiority. Even the Christian "social worker" seems like she doesn't actually give a shit about the people. She literally says she is just there to turn people on to Jesus, not to help drug addicts. She says she doesn't really care if they get help with their drug problem as long as they find Jesus.
The only scum I saw in this video was the smug western/christian people thinking they are better than everyone, not the actual city itself.
