- African Grasslands at the Detroit Zoo. Filmed July 22, 2022.
It’s another tour on Safari on the African savanna, this time at the fantastic Detroit Zoo, where you’ll find a unique blend of historical preservation mixed with top quality, large habitats. Today, we’ll see how the zoo applies this approach in the African Grasslands, where we’ll find Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebras, and Wildebeest roaming the expansive, open yards. We’ll also see a royal Lion, and hope to catch a glimpse of the elusive Aardvark on this addition of Exhibit Tours.
An excerpt from “Wonders Among Us, Celebrating 75 Years of the Detroit Zoo” about Nick, the Killer Gnu: Nick a blue gnu, is the most infamous animals in the zoo’s history because he is the only one to have cause the death of a human. On July 15, 1932, he killed his keeper, Gus Mott… …”it is believed [Mott] entered the African veldt exhibit for the purpose of feeding the various animals, and that the steppe, where he was chased by an ostrich through the door to the gnu exhibit adjoining. Before he could protect himself, he was pinned in a corner, and so badly gored…that he died a short time later in the hospital.”
Information presented in this video about the Detroit Zoo came from the park’s website or social media pages, or from public online articles.

Amazing ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the great video!
I love your videos, Derek. There are a couple of African species that I wish more zoos would display, including the the striped hyena, Cape buffalo, bonobo, aardwolf and secretary bird.
I just got back from the Cincinnati zoo I’m going to the Detroit zoo in a couple days. I’m sad they have no elephants but Detroit zoo is great!
It’s a pretty nice African section. Sad to see the hippos and painted dogs not there any more.So many zoos have gotten rid of hippos or have passed and have not gotten new ones.
I wish more zoos displayed the honey badger!
Me too! I was definitely a little sad that Fort Wayne phased out their Honey Badgers.
@@DereksZooVideos0118oh! I just realized the OKC zoo will be getting honey badgers for Expedition Africa!
@@kevinmiller4457 That's awesome zoos, I will definitely have to try to make a trip there someday.
@@DereksZooVideos0118 ya me too! I saw a little sneak peak of the new Africa section and their instagram page
I wish more US zoos displayed Geladas
I haven't had a chance to see Geladas yet, so I would have to agree!
Go to the Bronx zoo
@@chasewilliamlesh7594 I'd love to visit the Bronx Zoo someday, not sure how soon I'll be able to make it happen though.
Seems like the next episode will be something about a Pygmy hippo who attacked a sitatunga before the exhibit’s opening
Correct. It's very unfortunate that that incident has clouded the opening of what really is a great new habitat.
Animals that are hard to see in captivity:
African bush elephants
Nile hippopotamus
Spotted hyenas
Chimpanzees
Secretary birds
Shoebills
African Forest Buffaloes
Hartebeestss
Sable antelopes
Gemsboks
Nubian ibexes
Dromedaries
African wild a$$es
Drills(an old world monkey)
African leopards
Aardvarks
Patas monkeys
Elands
Etc
That's quite the list! I've been lucky enough to see a number of those animals before.
Did you know Jabari is the tallest giraffe in the country
I had not heard that, thanks for sharing!
