I lost my first DC Sabre in a Veron Deacon that flew away in 1972. I now have two Sabres new in their boxes.

Good morning Mark. Back in the 60s my father had the Veron Decon single channel powered by the DC Sabre. In those days we used to fly from stony cross airfield in the new forest. Sadly not allowed to fly there now. Good memories.

Hi Terry, good morning, they certainly were a popular workhorse! thanks for the comment

After a few more years, and with the CAA now interfering, I fear we won’t be able to fly anywhere.

I stupidly on a whim gave one of those away to someone on my flying field 38 years ago.

Since you found the better adjust - more rpm - of contrapiston needless to continue to pick up them...

Although the DC leaflet says an 8 X 6( for sport use) that Sabre sounded like it was really struggling.
Especially if you are running it in I would go for an 8x 4 to lighten the load. The Sabre was never a great performer having a lower MAP power rating than the then current diesels.
They just chug along unlike a PAW!

Thanks for the comment and info, always appreciated. I did run this for a while in my Tomboy Senior, but not really powerful enough so replaced with a PAW 1.49, and now it realises shifts!

I've just got an old freeflight model out of the loft Mark and lo and behold it's got a DC Sabre in it. It's currently seized up but I'm spraying it with WD40 in the hopes that I can get it to turn without having to dismantle it. Do you think it would be better to soak it in petrol in a jar or should I just keep going with what I'm doing?

Hi Cliff, I would suggest some oil and after a day or so heat, either with a hot air gun or in the oven on about 100deg, not too hot, and see if you can get it turning, probably just gummed up with the castor oil which needs softening. Don't force it as you could do some damage. Let me know how you get on 😀

This 1.5 cc diesel would run better on a 7x6 or 8x4 prop using D1000 diesel fuel for this plain bearing engine.

It was sticky at first then appeared to be ok in the latter part of the run. They were certainly no powerhouse and further fiddling won't get it going any better than it did, that's how they are, an ideal beginner's motor, easy to start and easy to tune with plenty of leeway with both fuel and compression settings.
