The geisha he consulted hated his book and wrote her own, it's called Geisha: A life (by Mineko Iwasaki). I haven't read either, but yeah, I'm not planning to read Memoirs of a Geisha for the same reason you gave
For culling books, my stance is that some books won’t be enthralling to me. As I progress to hone and learn about myself, some books now don’t fill the gap I once had.
I like having some unread books but too much overwhelms me. I'm currently in the middle of a tbr project where I"m trying to reduce my physical tbr to 30 books. My plan is to get to the point where my tbr can be keep in one place, like my book cart or a stack next to my bed. I always want to have between 10-30 because I'm a mood reader and like options, and I've also been using kindle & audiobooks especially when they are cheaper. I will unhaul DNFs and books I rated lower than 3 or 4 stars depending on the book, basically a book I don't see myself ever wanting to reread. And i'm trying to be more selective with the books I buy. I feel like the most excited me (or anyone) will ever be for a book is soon after buying it, so I want to get to the point where I am reading new books soon after purchasing. I love watching other peoples TBR journey's because it's very inspiring and motivating. Great video!!
It's so funny because even in the time since I made and posted this video I've changed my mind so many times. Feeling like I need to read my own books and then feeling like it's okay if I deviate more than planned into library picks haha
I loved hearing you work through your thoughts on dnfing and why you want a zero tbr! The month I dnfd 8 books was a sad one. I started to worry that I'd read all the good books out there 🤣 I don't feel the fear at all about missing out on a 5 star read because most of the time I dnf because I think the writing is either poor or not to my taste. And I don't think the writing will change in the space of one book. I think it depends on what pushes you to dnf a book. At one point I said I wanted to get to a tbr of 60 then I said 30. I now have 14 unread books I own and 16 unread library books and it still feels like too much to me 🤣 Looking forward to the next update!
Thank you! I just could not enunciate my sentiment so I'm glad it came across okay! And yeah, I understand on the writing. Perhaps it'll start to become clearer to me as I whittle down 😊
I get what you mean about having a hard time letting go of books that you are interested in. If I am still vaguely interested in a book, then why would I unhaul it, or remove it from my list of books I want to read. But at one point I realised that for some of those books, there will simply ALWAYS be at least another 50 books I am keener to read. There are always new books being brought out that I would rather read. And then, for me, there is no point in having that book stare at me. More stuff on my shelves/on a list just adds to the clutter in my head in the end (however small their role is compared to the other mind clutter)
Yeah, I think my mood shifts from month to month about how motivated I feel to get rid of those types of books, but sometimes that fear of the one that got away comes up haha
Do you mean the quote? Haven't you seen all the reels where I swear everyone is like, Umberto eco is such a vibe but they are doing it because they want to legitimise buying new books hahaha
I'm also working on getting my tbr down and it's currently around 80 and i think i'd like to end up with around 10. i'm pretty good at dnfing but it's more when i don't like the style rather than the book itself, if a book isn't working for me i'm happy to give up. i mainly use the library but will be happy to buy books the library doesn't have once my tbr is down. i think around 10 is good enough to shop my shelves and use the library so i never end up with nothing to read.
80 sounds like a good starting point! I certainly only really buy books if they are indie and not available to request through the library because if I am buying books I want to support indie! X
@@schoolofholly5317 a few years ago it was over 200 but i've done well with culling over time. my goal is end of 2024 to be at my goal, i think that's reasonable.
I prefer to have a lot of unread books on my shelves. I'm lazy so I don't want to get rid of books too often and if they sit on my shelves after I've read them they're just a waste of space. So I never get stressed about my physical TBR, but for some reason my GR TBR stresses me out a lot.
ugh I hate Umberto Eco and turns out we have some opinion in common, idk how I feel about that 😐oh wait, what? Unread books being a mark of intelligence? Nah, we're not similar after all.
I like to have some unread books, I like the variety bc I'm a mood reader. I like to shop my shelves. But I have way too many, so I do want to have a smaller TBR. When my books are overflowing my shelves, or piling up, I know it's too many! I've been participating in @criminolly 's readwhatyouown challenge in 2023. I agree that since I have been trying not to buy books (like a book buying ban) really makes me want to buy even more. Either while I'm in a round of the challenge or in between rounds I feel like I need to get a lot while I can!!
Ah, I have only recently come across @criminolly but really loved the couple of videos I have watched so I will have to look out for the project you mention and see if I can jump on too 😁

I have to say I filmed this and then instantly decided to cull about 5 books so, my mind seems to change with the wind gaha

10-30 books sounds ideal, I think that may be my new goal because that sounds perfect for shopping without feeling like stuff is getting left behind!
As someone who is also doing tbr zero, it’s definitely not easy or quick! I feel you on so much in this!!!
Hahaha, yeah when you put it into years it's almost frightening!
i think its ok to have stuff on your shelves that you haven't read yet - but i do get overwhelmed at all of the books i still need to read!!!!

It’s a mix of both tbh: I’m happy I have a big TBR but sometimes I do panic! 😂
My moods change with the wind haha

I want enough books in my house that if I get snowed in I'm okay. but my physical TBR right now is a out of hand. I'm trying to work on it.

What is a GR TBR? Goodreads?
@@schoolofholly5317 ah yeah, sorry
I really liked Geisha when I read it but it was years ago!
Apparently the lady it is about decided to write her own memoir so I'm now tempted to get rid of it in favour of her account...
