What aspect of the swimming stroke do you struggle with the most? Let us know 👇

Decreasing stroke rate was the biggest help for me. I could keep a good cadence and breathing rate. Thanks for this video.

Being a coach I STRESS to my athletes not to get cought up in the swim start. You can ruin a race in the first 100 to 200 y/m of even a long course race.

Totally agree with this. Overdoing the start got me thinking if i would just quit or push forward.

I tell these three things to every first time triathlete or swim-anxious triathlete:
    1. Put on your wetsuit for multiple swims before race day. You need to get used to the feeling.
    2. Walk into the water and slowly ramp up your swim speed. The few seconds you gain by sprinting in aren’t worth it if the start line is far from the water.
    3. Good, consistent technique will cover more distance for you than trying to swim “faster”. Remember your training.

I've got my first OWS in a couple of days and I am honestly really scared. But that's the beauty of challenging yourself. I can't wait to get it done

Born in July and living on the coast my mom brought me to the beach and put me in as an infant, she said I immed, iately wriggled until I was in the shallow rolling surf, she said people would come over to watch the seemingly fish baby flop and get pummeled only to laugh like a lunatic, I've always been in the ocean, swimming teams, lifeguard at 16, it's in my blood, I feel connected to the ocean, like the primitive part of my brain feels more at home in the ocean than on land.

This was very helpful, thank you! I swam my first open water race today and completely “forgot how to swim” and felt like I was gasping for air the entire time. Wore a simple spring sleeveless short legged wetsuit and felt so constricted that I couldn’t catch my breathe. I also wasn’t prepared to be in brown water where I couldn’t see my arms and shoulder, which helped my stroke in the pool.

Practice swimming with your eyes closed for short periods of time in the pool. It can make a big difference in getting use to swimming without being able to see your arms. You can close your eyes when your head is down and open them to breathe. That will help you still swim straight.

the physical contact when rounding a bouy is a big trigger. a swim coach i had used to take a couple of lane ropes out and all of us in the masters group race to the other side of the pool. this was great for gettting us used to the contact while in a safe pool environment :)

I have practiced many types of breathing while swimming. I think it is anxiety that I have to work on now. that can really cause my shortness of breath. Cheers

The pacing part at the beginning of the race... I felt that ^^'

Tension in the body seems to make a massive difference for me even in the pool. I have to consciously tell each bit of my body to relax. I try really h are f to make my breathing as close to it would be just walking about and that seems to help a bit too. Basically trying too hard haha.

My main problem for that shortness of breath was a wetsuit that was too tight in the chest area (my chest circunference is 115 cm, but I'm only 175 cm tall, so I struggled to find a compromise of size that was enough wide for my chest without letting too much water in due to too long sleeves and legs).

Ditto, Tight wetsuit, gasping for breath, panic ensues. I think the best tip is to swim in a wetsuit in advance of the main event to get used to the feeling. I did my last triathlon in a loose aldi wetsuit I bought from a friend for a tenner. Did breast stroke and finished quiet well up the field. Stuff trying to look like a pro, just get the job done.

I get shortness of breath when swimming, due to covid related POTS. It seems the cold water and being flat plays havoc with my circulation. It usually goes after a 20minute warm up. Something i have to try and squeeze in before races.

Generally out of shape, I find panting with my head in the water pretty much impossible.😁

thank you for including the comment regarding Asthma. I have DNFed 2 races because of it , both durng the swim legs. I am working on it and hopefully overcome it for my next attempt at an IM race. Wish me all the best! 🙏🏾🫶🏽

I've just started getting Asthma after getting COVID. I'm using a Salbutimol inhaler ATM, one dose 20 mins before start and another dose in transition after the Bike. Seems to be holding out so far at sprint distance
