I really don’t understand comments like this. I grew up an hour from NYC. I have relatives all around the world. Whenever they visited when I was growing up my parents took them everywhere. NYC, Atlantic City… you name it. That’s what families do. It has nothing to do with being generous. This is what families do.

And while it is noted that the host family is taking care of most of your room, board and daily meals, it is actually Koichi; the husband and breadwinner of the family who is bankrolling everything from the sidelines. --Brian Ahern, think about that as you ignorantly skip around town “oooing” & “aaahing” your way through this little side trip. Due to many of the comments I’ve been reading, it apparently leaves a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths because you’re doing so on the back of such a kind and generous gentleman as Koichi. On top of everything else, you have dishonored Koichi’s young son by not having carried his load of groceries from the store that day. You also bring dishonor to the host family by usually lagging in the back of the group when you should have proactively been up at the front closest to the cash register - ready to pay and contribute. These are obvious slime-ball / freeloader moves of which there should absolutely be no excuse. This is why you are now being called out, laughed at and schooled by such a growing group of aware and educated viewers. It’s not enough that you offer to make just one lousy pasta dinner for everyone. If you had any sort of conscience and decency you should be contributing *at the very least* one solid meal plus snacks every bloody day to your wonderful host family. We haven’t seen solid nor consistent evidence of this. Have some respect for yourself and the family around you. Do better. Give your in-laws the honor they so greatly deserve.

@Annabelle, Japan laws about child seat are enforce below 6 years old, but they don't fine if ever caught not using any unless they use a seat belt instead. And the driver will have 1 point demerit from his license. 15 years ago when I have a 3 back passengers not wearing seatbelt and I was not aware of, I was caught by a police officer and I got one point demerit from my driver license. And the next time I need to renew my license I was only given 3 years license valid instead of a gold license.

My daughter was born a year after I first arrived here in Japan, and since then we used a child seat, even our bicycle here in Japan we have a child seat for kids.
