    I love it when I buy a camera and it has a forgotten mystery film inside. It’s like a window to the past.

    Don't blame 110 format and don't blame the scanner. Those pictures are just underexposed. When you're stuck with just 200 iso film and a camera with fixed shutter speed and a fixed aperture of f11, you should only use it in bright sunny days. There's no "plenty of light" in a rainy overcast day. Your eyes adapt to available light, that camera does not

    110 film is meant for casual snaps. that's how it should be approached.

    From what I've read, the Lomography 110 films are all packed in cartridges coded (for cameras that read the coding) as ISO 400. This means the Orca and Tiger work very well in older 110 cameras (which expect ISO 100 film and have no other option), but may not work all that well in newer cameras (like the Ektra line, which came after all the "Pocket Instamatic" line). Tiger will be underexposed by one stop in cameras that read the ISO coding notch; Orca will be overexposed the same amount (which works a lot better, in general). I'd recommend trying the Lady Gray in your Ektra, if they still have it in 110 -- it's ISO 400 and should expose more correctly.

      Maybe it was a mistake in the film processing that caused the photos to come out too dark.

      you can trim the cartridge with cutters to change the iso. (if your camera has an iso switch inside the film chamber, pushing it down with tape raises the exposure for slower speed film)

    • @42crazyguy
      @42crazyguy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's actually the other way around. Lomo says on their page about color 92 that it is loaded into a 200 iso cartridge despite being 400 iso. You can trim the tab on the right to the length for 400 iso if your camera is looking for that tab to set the iso.

      Lomography's 110 is meant for older cameras, so its both camera and film maybe, just an incompatibility. But also, I think that scanner may not be great for 13mmx17mm film.

  • @Spuzzmacher
    @Spuzzmacher 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    lol you just got the true vintage 110 experience. Seems like /3 to 1/2 of the images of any roll wouldn't turn out. Especially on point & shoots. My dad was a pro and I'm going through his archives, and everything he shot with his nikons were consistently good, and of everything he & my mom shot with her P&S and 110 cams, about 50% are underexposed, double exposed, or overexposed trash. He just said, well yeah that's what shooting was like in those days, you never really knew what you were going to get. ...why he went digital and never looked back and thinks I'm nuts for liking film. The reasons I like 110 are: it multiplies by four all the inaccuracies, characteristics, and idiosyncrasies of 35mm film, (if I didn't want those elements, I'd just shoot digital) and because my favorite camera ever made takes it. You have to really want your images to scream lofi/glitch film, and then 110 is your baby.

  • @jbmaillet
    @jbmaillet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    110 was really a consumer (vs photographer) format, intended for summer holiday shots on the beach, birthday party with a short-range flash. I you want to step out of these situations, I can think of 2 options, that can be combined:
    1/ Use B&W film, now available again at Lomo: the exposure latitude of B&W is way more forgiving than C41 (not even mentioning E6, it it ever existed in 110). I got a small stock in my fridge that will last me for years. Side note: I have hope from a Ferania option, which may be less pricey than Lomo (way smaller marketing $$$ department): they _do_ have the machinery for this in their factory, and I'd rather give them my love money than to Lomo exploiting hipsters.
    2/ Use a serious 110 camera, which is a kind of oxymoron, but actually exist: the Pentax 110 is the most well known, still reasonably cheap and easy to find, extra cute and a pleasure to use. But there is also a Minolta 110 SLR (much more rare, I came across one on a flea market only once), and the non-SLR but decently built Rollei A110. (I have the Pentax and the Rollei).
    All in all, in my experience, 110 maybe the most expensive film format for what it delivers from a technical standpoint. And it is not a film size issue (there's been tons of fictions / documentaries shot on similar 16mm format), most often it's camera problem. But the film itself from Lomo and its marketing department + the processing + the scanning etc = $$$, in the end making it the exact opposite of what it is supposed to be: a frugal photographer experience.
    Though, sometimes, 110 offer moments of grace. On Flickr there used to be a guy in Asia shooting B&W 110 and publishing some marvelous pictures.

    Now a days there is no advantage of size. But in the 70s and early 80s 35mm point and shoot cameras where more bulky. Earlier 35mm point and shoot cameras were usually zone focus or rangefinders and the lens stuck out two centimeters or more. Approximately after 1985 they started making compact auto-focus 35mm cameras. I think smaller compact 35mm cameras are what caused 110 film to lose popularity.

    Those pictures remind me of the disappointing results of a 110 camera in the 1980s. The cheapo unadjustable cameras were mainly for sunny holidays. Some could be adjusted and they were marginally better I think.

    A sunny day would help. Also if you have a used up Flipflash, inserting it in the camera will provide a slower shutter speed. Just a thought if you try it again! Cheers from USA 🇺🇸.

    On that camera you have switch for two exposure settings , for a sunny day and for a cloudy day! You probably kept the switch on the sunny day option and you said it was cloudy, I'm just guessing but no matter, the photos are ok for me, interesting! However, this format was made at a time when photos were printed on photo paper, on a standard dimension of paper, which is, if I'm not mistaken, 9x12, so then it was quite acceptable! This camera is made for grandparents on their vacations or to take photos of birthday parties.

    I think this model has a fixed f 11.0 lens and three shutter speeds. Did it need a meter battery? Anyway, top quality 110 cameras from the day are the Pentax SLR as noted, a Canon ED 110 (?) and the Minox 110S (which I had). Even the best of the cameras were seriously limited by the size of the film format and by the films available. For a brief period, Kodak sold Ektar 25 (Yes, ISO 25) in 110, and Pentax used it to do outstanding, full page magazine ads with their 110 SLR, but the truth was that nearly all 110 cameras had crappy lenses (like here), minimal exposure control, if any, and were targeted to the lowest of low tech photo snapshooter. Why did 110 format exist? Over its whole corporate life, Kodak made a practice of trying to use its domination of the film industry to force new film formats into popular consumer usage, thereby cornering the right to sell such film to gain further market control. 110 film suffered from a hopeless lack of potential quality it inherited from the earlier 126 format: a film cartridge with no precision film back like 35mm. Accurate image focus is entirely dependent on the accuracy of the film cartridge, and 110 took that beyond the limiits of cheap plastic construction. The 110 format was designed for films of 100 or 400, and neither had the grain structure to deliver. I bought the first Minotla Zoom 110, then the Minox 110S, and I came so close to buying up a full Pentax Auto 110 system of camera, lenses, etc. My Pentax deal fell apart when a foolish vendor tried to gouge me on the price. I sobered up, sold off the two 110 cameras I had along with a load of 110 film. (I used the film as padding when I mailed the cameras to ebay buyers; they were gratefully surprised.) Never reconsidered 110.

      Going to really confuse a lot of people. Anyone interested to take up film photography should avoid 110 entirely. 110 offers little (usually no) creative control and usually fixed crap lenses at small apertures, your smartphone has a better camera by far. There ARE many good reasons to play with film, but not 110. Get a manual 35mm SLR so you can access interchangeable and especially zoom lenses. There are many available cheap enough from ebay etc. A Pentax KM, Olympus OM1/2 .. even an Nikon F2 😀 .. hold any if those (and many others) and you will laugh at plastic crap like a pocket instamatic. Before anyone says a used F2 is too expensive .. (a) compared to the cost of **using film**, the camera really isn't the main expense, and (b) if buying an old camera to USE rather than sit jn the glass case collection.. buy one that's git a few gentle scuffs and scars. They sell cheap and you will be less afraid to give it a few more. Those cameras were designed to be used, they can take it

    Enjoyed your video. Even with a "fancy" 110 camera (Pentax Auto 110 SLR) the downfall is the quality of the film and size of the negative. Fun fact -- the Micro-Four Thirds mirrorless image sensor is almost exactly the same size as the 110 negative -- but definitely produces better results.

    As others have commented, it seems like the meter your shutter speed is broken. However, I am almost certain did the camera does not shoot ISO 200, but either 100 or 400, so you would’ve had to push or pull on the developing. I can’t find manual online, so I might be wrong. I thought Kodak 110s only shot 100 or 400
