Steve Russell also said on an IG live interview in 2020 that J-Boog was singing the lead on the original version of "Gots Ta Be". Chris Stokes told Steve he wanted Omarion to sing lead instead because he said since their first single "Uh Huh", it made sense to stick with that formula as Omarion being the lead singer. Steve said he didn't understand why because J-Boog sounded good, but Chris and the other T.U.G. label managers said to just follow the format. So they re-recorded the song and Omarion sung the lead.

I knew it was true in the first video. I remember Steve's demo back from the MySpace days and there used to be a video on TH-cam of him singing the song along with a N'Sync song Steve also wrote with his own group Troop. The original "Gots to be" demo is still on TH-cam and you can't mistake Steve's vocal even though he and O have a similar tone. Steve has had the same voice since he was a teenager himself.
