This is fascinating from a programming perspective, stuff like this should be taught in classes, ie, prompt students to theorize on the cause of various glitches in famous games.

You should mention that if you use the middle pipe instead of the first pipe (the first pipe being the Minus-World Pipe of course) you end up in World 5. It could be useful for some people who want to get to world 5 really quickly.
This is due to the fact that you are not loding the normal warpzones that should spawn there but rather the underground warpzone in World 4-2. Usually there is only the pipe in the middle that brings you to world 5 but due to the game loading the data wrong, you can access the two pipes that would actually be blank spaces (Hex 36 as you said yourself). Usually these pipes are not accessable in 4-2 because of the blank space, but here, you can trick the game into letting you access the blank space pipe. I believe it was because of the little animation with the piranaplants popping out (for the record, these plants will not hurt you if you touch them. Just another interesting thing) the game hasn't actually loaded the warpzone fully yet but the pipes actually have text over them already, it is just a blank space. It also starts with the warpzone data of 4-2 (don't ask me why) for the pipe warps. There is a trigger that hasn't been activated yet because you didn't go through the top like you should in a normal case and that causes the game to behave this way. If you walk to the end of the screen, the trigger activates and the warpzone is loaded proper. If you try to get into the 3rd pipe (which is possible, you just need to be very careful not to walk too far to the right) you also end up in the Minus-World. Like I said, it loads the warps for 4-2, but you are able to use the pipes that are not accessable in 4-2 so you end up in the world corresponding to hex 36, which is a blank space because well, these worlds are blanks.

Since the newer games have more game mechanics, and have more features to the older ones, there are more problems in those small fragments of the game mechanics, and that is being combined with the old mechanics that already exist, so overall, that does pile up, and causes more glitches.

I've seen some glitches in SM64, like the Death corner where you go to an area ontop of the castle and climb up, you die for no apparent reason.
This is more glitchy. The newer one has lots of glitches but less effective.

I see it all the time, and I'd really like to correct it..
For the Minus World glitch, going through the wall. You DO NOT need to break that one block on top if you're using the crouch backwards jump method. Breaking the block is only required for the other method where you don't crouch. (The non-crouching one is similar, but you have to glitch through the single roof block on the right that you didn't break, and then through the wall like normal. The crouch method is usually easier.) Breaking that single roof block does literally nothing if you're using the crouch-jump method.
It's not a huge deal or anything. It's just, every single time I hear the crouch-jump method of getting to the Minus World, it ALWAYS involves breaking that one block even through it doesn't do anything.

1:40 for those wondering, this is due to the NES being based on a 8 bit processor, which can hold up to 256 values, between 0 and 255. So, I assume that when the koopa goes below 0, its vertical position overflows to 255 and down xD. This is the reason for why Super Mario Bros. does feature only horizontal-scrolling levels. And why this doesn't happen to the horizontal axis? Because more memory is used to store values, and I think, as a programmer, 2 bytes would be enough for SMB :D.
4:22 the reason is that most likely developers used ASCII, so at the character position #36, which should be the $ (dollar), there is nothing.
The ASCII makes sense, although not sure why they would do that on such a limited console, they could've added their own bitmap characters.

I think that the reason the small fire Mario exists is that when you pick up the fire flower, it does not actually give you a different sprite, it just changes the pallet. This means that rather than giving you a new fire-flower Mario sprite, it will just swap the colours in your sprite around. The reason it goes to big Mario when you throw fire balls is because the Mario throwing fire balls is a different sprite. The game is programed to change to that sprite and change back to the normal one when you throw a fire ball IF you have the different colour pallet. But, because the fire ball throwing sprite is based on the colour pallet changed big Mario, it changes you to big Mario just for those frames because there is no colour pallet changed small Mario throwing fire ball sprite. The reason that there is not one is because you are not supposed to see pallet changed small Mario in the game. It will only give you the fire flower if you are already big Mario and so if you are small Mario, you should not be able to change pallet colours due to you not having the flower. This glitch allows you to get the fire flower as small Mario, giving you the pallet changed and all of the aforementioned as small Mario.
Dunno if this is right so don't take my word for it but with past experience in coding, this is what it looks like. :)
You can get fire flower as small mario by hitting block and then touching enemy and then taking it but it only chages you to big mario so this isn't perfect theory

I still consider Super Mario as one of the best video game franchise of all, if not the best. Yes, better than CoD, Assassin's Creed (which I still love) or movie games like Heavy Rain. Mario is pure skill and fun. It also has a great atmosphere and lovable characters.

Glitching in a glitch level in a glitchy game in a glitch video... NORMAL
After you get a Game Over you don't have to go back to 1-1. Just hold A and press start and you'll go back to the start of the world you died on instead.
I noticed a lot of thses glitches without ever looking for them.
Another nice one is on the stairs up the the flag, if you jump on a koopa at the right spot you'll just keep bouncing off him and eventually start getting 1-ups. Just keep boncing off him and when you're done continue up the stairs and finish the level. Note the life count; It'll be some kind of weird character. This can pretty much give you an infinite amount of lives.
And even with that knownledge I have never been able to beat the game.
That's more of an exploit.

There's 3 other -worlds, and World -4 is literally just a black screen, so that would be where the negative worlds end.
You may not care but I wanted to let you know that, as a programmer, I have a very love/hate relationship with glitch videos in general. They are fun to watch but EVERY SINGLE TIME the creator attempts to even START to dissect the bug/glitch they fail miserably or they go into WAY too much detail and usually wrong on top of that.
That being said, ... this is the first video that I've ever seen where you struck a good balance between details and.. you know.. actually FACTUAL information.
I, for one, love detail and can't get enough but ONLY if it's correct. As a programmer I have a pretty damn good and immediate BS detector for the reasoning behind these things.
... Subscription time, which VERY rarely happens anymore since I seemingly found all the good channels YEARS ago. You've DEFINITELY earned it.

That's amazing. Years ago when I first started programming I tried making a Mario clone and my coding had the exact same glitch where if you got stuck into a wall and turned around you would slide backwards through the walls.
I remember jumping over a damn flag pole by accident when I still were a little boy.
Can't recall how I managed that though, it was pure luck.
People probably won't believe that anyways but I know I did that once.
I did, in world 3.
If you do a Paper Mario Glitchfest, there's a glitch on the N64 version, where in Bowsers Castle, there's a room filled with lava, and an entrance that leads to a room with a chest. However, if you jump at the entrance just right, you can clip through the wall. This ends up showing the room with the chest for a second, then the game freezes and implodes, causing programming code to begin appearing onscreen. That glitch terrified me as a kid, but I'm not sure if it works on the VC version.
I love how there's a set of glitches used by speed runners of this game that aren't even mentioned (with the exception of the walk through walls glitch, kinda) and it takes top level speed runners less than the length of this video to pull em all off and beat the game

One time in Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, I reached a castle I couldn't beat. I did the infinite 1-up trick prior to reaching the castle so I didn't have to worry about a game over for a while. At some point, I accidentally clipped through a wall and jump up to the top of the level. There was no going back down. I was crazy happy for having done such a glitch. I reached the end and couldn't go down to get the ax. The time ran out and I got that game over for the trillionth time!
Minus 1. As if people weren't expecting that one.

you can mid air jump off powerups. you can also bounce the mushroom in 1-2 to be stuck between two blocks so it vibrates back and forth
I saw my friend trigger the last glitch (stuck in the wall swimming) back in '86 when we were 7 years old. That's probably the first game glitch we ever saw.

I remember jumping the flagpole in lvl 1-1 and there was a giant brick wall stopping you after a while of running. If you then used the game geni, you could jump this wall but then you entered the no end zone.
What I want to know is how there's even a sprite for small Fire Mario.

Its not a sprite, is a pallete change, so you could have a fire flower toad.

i can't believe you forgot about the classic 1up turtle shell glitch!! it's when you keep jumping on the turtle's shell on the stairs until the time runs out. this gets you infinite lives.. (you have to be either big mario or fire mario to do this)

Calling either one of these games "broken" is insane. A broken game is one which the game play is extremely reduced by lots of glitches, to the point which you just can't play the game in a sitting. That doesn't happen at all in these games.

Once you jump over the flagpole, you do eventually run into a far right hand side invisible wall, but you have to get through the entire level quickly.

New games are about more fancy graphics and not enough bug fixing. So, newer games are more broken.
Considering I encountered a lot of glitches even in gigantic budget games like The Last Of Us, I guess you're right, also Bishock on the PS3 was almost embarassing sometimes

In 4-2, if you hit the vine block, then scroll the screen to the right until the first pixel where the vine becomes invisible. Try to climb the vine. Yep, you’re softlocked and cannot move at all
