That embrace and kiss then the flash back to when he pushed zixia away is such a powerful and sad moment. Absolutely one of the best movies of all time.
I stumbled upon a Chinese Odyssey by sheer accident while looking up films to watch, I had never heard of Stephen Chow until I watched Kung Fu Hustle, after that I watched both parts of the Odyssey. As someone who loves foreign films, both parts have be two of the greatest Chinese films I’ve ever seen. The story, the actors and actresses, everyone made these films simply incredible, and that ending .... After watching part 2, it felt so bittersweet, because of how sad and tragic the ending really is, he doesn’t get the girl, even worse he’s an immortal so he has to spend the rest of his life not only thinking about her, but thinking about her being with another copy of him (gave me doctor who vibes actually) you definitely have to be an adult to fully understand the message because I just had to step back and say “damn, now that’s how you end a film.” Stephen Chow is now one of my favorite actors and directors of all time, because of his creativity and acting, but out of all of his films, his role as Joker and The Monkey King will always be his personal best imo.
The best thing about this movie was the fact that I watched this as a kid and laugh from the starting to the end and then i watched it again as an adults and begin to understood the real meaning of everything that has been happening in the movie. Plus, knowing that he had a real relationship with the actress gave it a real kick.
The worst part is that he has the headband on which restricts and gives him extreme pain anytime he has strong emotions, which also include love, joy, sadness etc. he can only remove the band by attaining buddhahood/nirvana etc, which is basically to give ip all earthy desires, which I'm guessing includes sexual and normal human desires like love and wife and kids, job, possessions, etc. he is not human so he cannot have human emotions and lifestyle. He is a pawn of the gods/Buddha, even if he himself is an immortal. I think that is why he had to possess the other body that had No headband and use that body to express what he could no longer do as the immortal monkey King under Buddhas punishment.
Hits also one of chows only straight man roles, and only real romance movie, that happen to be one of my favourite tragic bittersweet romantic comedies.
The fact is at this point he has already given up. The headband will restrict any human emotion he will have. That's the reason why he goes inside and of his human reincarnation body and fulfil his human reincarnation's wish (not his wish). It is act of mercy that he shows here so that these two reincarnated couple can live their lives without any regret (mercy, life without regret are some of main parts of Buddha's teaching). To Monkey King, he has given up and overcame the grief and regret when he walked back on them with his Ruyi Jingu Bang on his shoulder. At least that's how I see it. This movie is so good that it leaves with so many interpretations.

Though it's good to remember that it was written and directed by Jeff Lau, and NOT Stephen Chow. Lau's later Chinese Odyssey movies try to achieve the same effect, but they don't quite succeed. Obviously the key ingredient was how Lau and Chow collaborated to create such a unique experience.
From a Jeff Lau's interview I watched several years ago, he felt Chow began to show distrust in him during the production of Out of the Dark in 1995, mostly because the Chinese Odyssey wasn't as successful commercially as other Chow's titles. He said the final fighting scene in the Dark- Karen Mok killing Chow with a chainsaw - was a subtle suggestion that Chow and he should part way.
yes Eddy that's one of my all time favs too. There is some unique about the chemistry between Chow n Lau, which is not commonly seen in chow's later works.
For those who have trouble reconciling that this ending is bittersweet. It is not. It definitely feels that way though. And that's because you're missing the ironic context. This is not a bittersweet ending, because this is a reward. You have to remember that this is supposed to take place during the Journey to the West. And at the end of that story Monkey King becomes a Buddha. This scene is Monkey King's reward for having finally accepted his duty to take Tripitaka to India. If you're actually paying attention, it almost makes no sense why Tripitaka would tell Monkey King to go see what is going on. It is also weirder that the headband does not punish Monkey King for this act of self indulgence. And that is because this is a reward for Monkey King for experiencing and sacrificing that love. It is a step towards Buddhahood. It is not taboo to love as a Buddha, but to cling onto that love is the problem. Monkey King has experienced love and learned to not allow it to shackle him. This is a good thing. This is a happy ending for Monkey King, that's why he's no longer bothered by it in the end. It just isn't a happy ending for most people, because they're not Buddhas.
This is a good interpretation. Still, I see it as a bitter ending considering the context of Monkey King's flashbacks and his train of thoughts when he was contemplating putting on the headband. In order to save her, he (as Joker) needs to put on the headband and become the Monkey King. But putting on the headband also means that he has to give up this love. The headband does not punish Monkey King for this act of indulgence because Monkey King kissed Zixia via Joker's physical body and not his own. Joker and Monkey King are right now two different entities with their own souls, which is why the scene showed that Zixia could sense that she wasn't hugging her true love when Monkey King's soul left Joker's body. Who is to say with confidence, that Monkey King would choose this path again if he had the option of saving Zixia and living happily ever together without putting on the headband?
@@AUGWZC Except you're forgetting one of the most important scenes. "I had my best love. But I didn't treasure her. When I lost her, I regretted it. It is the most painful thing in the world. If God could give me another chance, I would say "I love you" to her. If there is a time limit, I hope it is ten thousand years." The reason why Monkey King gets the chance to indulge in the end is because he asks for it. The reason why the headband doesn't work, isn't because he is in another body, but because the gods gave Monkey King the one reward he asked for. It literally doesn't make any sense if the headband doesn't work if Monkey King was just in another body. The gods wouldn't allow that kind of loophole to exist, because they know that Monkey King is too smart for his own good and would abuse it if it were the case. Because that's how Monkey King got to where he was in the first place in the stories. It isn't a coincidence that after they escape with Pandora's Box, that they end up in the far future, it is the exact scenario Monkey King asked for.

Fun fact for Hong Kong movies fans: The scene which Stephen Chow says to Athena Chu, "If there must be a time limit of my love for you, I wish it to be 10000 years." This is a tribute to Wong Kar Wai, another popular director of Hong Kong in Western culture. 1:27 The moment he remembered how harshly he treated her in the past, he hug her tighter & kiss her harder.. indicating how regretful he was of his past action towards her 😔
It’s still hurts him though if you think about it . He can’t have feelings or the crown would shrink on his head . So he’s technically fighting the pain to kiss her for the first and last time .
She's so pretty, had the biggest crush on her back then lol But I love this ending, especially after all these years you understand the movie better. I always thought that final kiss was sad because you can see how much pain he was in, physically and emotionally. It was as though the crown itself was crushing his skull because he really wanted that kiss and also emotionally because he rejected her kiss. Beautiful movie and thanks so much for the upload. I don't know why after all these years I suddenly wanted to rewatch this again lol... it's still so beautiful after all this time with the music, the way he play both character as the Monkey King, just the facial expression along with her look at the end at him as though she knew him... that part will always be my favorite moment in the movie because it's so sad
The best monkey king movie ever. Watched this movie with my friends during our undergrad year almost 20 years ago. Time has passed really fast that we can never ever realized. Just now i watched again the whole movie and it has strucked deep inside my heart that how much this movie is so relatable to our love lives that sometime loving someone wholeheartedly and can never ever be with them can make you weeps for eons . And making one realized that we sholuld be fighting for the love that we had today just so the memories will be cherished forever. Thank you Stephen Chow for this masterpiece . 💟💟💟
i know people talk about Shaolin Soccer an dKung Fu Hustle, but his Monkey King movies will always be the best works of art he's ever produced by a long shot. The story, the development, the characters, the acting, the plot twists, the messages. all 11/10
Except it's Jeffrey Lau's project and Chow only starred in it. Granted Chow later made his own Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, which was quite commendable as well and one of the better telling of this tale.
@@VenomousWest there are alot of stephen chow great movies/dramas was directed by other directors not stephen chow. I like him as an actor better than he as a director because he enjoyed his acting as director he stressed a lot.
@@jetlino.1126 This is quite true. In fact when the said director of this movie made his own Chinese Odyssey, it flopped really hard. Stephen Chow is behind the magic of why this the first two parts of Chinese Odyssey is so damn good.
Indeed. Do we see true happiness sparkling in Chow's eyes any longer since he broke up with Chu? It's such a salty, pitty feeling coming from this scene. In this artificial world, mistake could be fixed, but not the real world. I wonder if he ever watches this scene time after time till now.
Tell me about it. As a kid I loved this movie because it was goofy af. I rewatched it the other day and realized just how deep and well written and developed the story and all the characters in it were. Even the side and support characters were monumental to the movie. Remove or change even 1 side Character and the movie falls apart. But they don't outshine the main cast at all and respect the main characters which is brilliant writing and screenplay. It's the most perfect movies ever.
@@esvalor2003because joker is the human form of mk. So when joker died by the spider lady the body got reincarnated but Mk remain .mk remembers everything but reincarnated joker don’t love her . Love how he managed to match make his reincarnation self and the reincarnation of his true love. Walking away, knowing the fact that his future self, will going to have a very happy life with his true love's reincarnation.
one of the most beautiful pieces of film making i have ever seen! the music is perfect , steven chow is a genius of historic proportions no doubt about it, this man will make you laugh and cry at the same time, thank you lord for men like this
Such a sad scene. The song is perfectly sad and melancholic. The whole series was goofy, but this scene came out of nowhere along with the awesomely done ending that we all knew was inevitably coming. Love chows take on it, and this ending alone made this one of my favourite movies of all time. That, along with Athena Chu Yan being my childhood wifey crush lol. She's stunning in this and other HK movies from this period and earlier. Same as Joey Wong.
Because he can never be the one to experience love and be happy with his eternal love. Monkey king cannot feel human emotion too great or he will be in pain from the head band. That's why when he tried to save his love, the headband tightened and he had to drop her and she died. This scene is in the past with his past self, before he had the headband and became monkey king. He regrets not telling her he loved her in the past, so he corrects his mistake here and changes the future for his past self. However, for monkey king, he has no such luck and must bear being alone and pain, punished to serve Tripitaka to atone for his sins against heaven.
Of course monkey king git to kiss and hug his love so it's not all sad, but he can never tell her it's really him. so he will never experience that tried happiness. So it is bittersweet.. such a complex ending with many strong conflicting emotions.. it is like a beautiful sadness, unrequited love for monkey king.
Just love this song. Everything is perfect. The vocal, the instrument integration, the bass note that comes in and the female vocal in the background. It's melancholicly haunting yet sooooo beautifully sung/integrated into the song. Don't know why but listening to & watching this mtv often just makes me cry for no clear reason. The strangest thing is that I haven't even seen the movie yet!!!!! Athena is just gorgeous and perfectly cast for this role. Heavenly sent 😙😙😙😙😙 Nice video with an excellent ending 👍👍👍👍
Can't hold this feeling. Stephen Chow is a living legend. Love all his movies. This one included. When I was a kid couldn't understand it, but now I am. Pretty sad now my idol (Stephen chow) has became really old. Wish he always young and make a lot of good movies.
Stephan Chow’s Chinese odyssey is soooo legendary that many attempt to remake it. The newest remake drama “A Chinese Odyssey Love of Eternity” seem good and hits a lot of Chow’s jokes. It also try to make sense of the 6 ear monkey and try to explain what happened. Too bad it’s not fully sub.....
This scene always pulls my heartstrings... the pain.. the feels... Felt so so sad for him!!!!! Really cried my heart out when I first watched this. No other Monkey King movie can top this. It's filled with HUMOUR AND EMOTION! AAAAAAAAAA Truly a bittersweet ending.... He gave her the happy ending he couldn't give her in his past life.... *Cries*
THAT'S NOT PUNISHMENT.. IF THEY ENDED UP TOGETHER, THEY MIGHT END UP WITH DIVORCE. TRUE LOVE DOESN'T HAVE TO HAVE PHYSICALLY, BUT IT JUST NEVER DIE INSIDE YOU.
they even did a bait and switch with the female lead - we were made to root for the Bone Demon as his true love, but then in Part 2 we were introduced to the real female lead and started rooting for her. truly amazing writing, directing, casting and acting there
The past fades away from the present and will not return The scarlet leaves lie within the dusts What has begun yields no change...in the end... My heavenly lover is wandering...beyond the white clouds Love and hate...rolling on the bitter sea It's hard to escape...the fortunes of this world In love...but can't be close together Perhaps I have to believe...this is...my fate
Watched The Both Parts Yesterday Only At Netflix. Man.... Never Even Got Emotional In Any Romantic Scene or Movie But At This Ending Too much emotional even eyes were moist.. One Of The Things That Made Monkey King A Legend 💕❤️
Fast forward 500 years only to run into the reincarnation of your love.. I cant imagine how it would feel 🥲 the way he looks at her conveys so much.. beautiful and heartbreaking
Zixia is an immortal fairy, she can't die so she wait for Joker to be reborn only to chase him again. At least Wukong was able to help both of them reconcile.
everyone has experienced hurting their love one when still young....after getting older...then only realized that we had missed and passed the timing of the loving that right one..and regret.... if giving another second chances.... but that's is no way...time passed has no way of return...
Wukong as the monkey king’s first name means to understand, comprehend and feel being empty which is pretty similar to what Bruce Lee’s told us. So wukong feel that empty state from the inside and move on to relieve the human kind from sufferings. But when he was given a chance to make a choice, he choose to make up for that regrettable past
Chinese odyssey is Stephen chows best work and a Chinese and asian classic in general. This was also Athena chus breakout role that propelled her into Stardom she has done many films prior but this role gave her that boost she deserved. She was also my first crush as a child 😂❤
Don't know where to put my feelings for this ending scene. It is both happy and sad at the same time. Since you can't be with the person you love so much, the best thing you can do is giving them the best of chance to be together to the end. Love can be a pain...
why so little comments on this stunning video!!! ahhhh it enrages me that people are ignorant to the sentiment here, come on to god fellow humans , true love and that ability to walk away for the others own good though it destroys hearts!! if that isnt true to every principle that should be in use on our amazing planet then i dont know what is!!!!
I’ve always overlooked this movie from when I was kid. Now over the last two evenings I finished both parts on Netflix. Omg why did it took me so long? The most underrated Stephen chow movie ever. My only gripe is Karen mok didn’t get as much attention in the second part
That's what makes part 2 superior. Athena Chu > Karen mok anyway. Karen mok is annoying and can't take her seriously as love interest, but Athena Chu, wow, she's every Chinese adolescents wife material. Lol
I am never sure about my feeling for the ending of this movie. It is a happy ending yet it is so sad. I am not even sure this is comedy movie or a sad romantic movie anymore....
i know right ? it really mix your feeling at the end of it.. part 1 was so hillarious that you will never expect the 2nd part would be so devastatingly sad
Yes, like firefighters, soldiers, do they have the same sadness when they go to war, and like the monkey king, they want to kiss their loved ones tightly because no one can be sure if this is the last kiss
The practical effects and stunts are so much better in this movie than that crappy new cgi that Chinese movies use now. And yes, Although very brief, this had the best version of the Monkey King.
Why old Hong Kong movies are so good even they don't have fancy budget/CGI? The OST, Casts, Story, fight, etc. This freaking ending OST makes the ending so sad to watch.
Yah ! And that things pinches more to the sentiments and hurts too much to the emotional. Sacrifice Made by Xuan Zang Is Nothing Infront Of This Sacrifice That Monkey King Made 💔
If only Stephen chow had more screen time as the monkey king in that suit, it would’ve been awesome. Would’ve love to see him in a sequel in his younger days in the monkey king suit.
Yes and found a very interesting Reddit post under the username r/black myth wukong that said “The internal file of the Fourth Sister is in Chinese pinyin: Qixiangu(Seven Fairies). In some versions of Journey to the West, Fairy Zixia is in a romantic relationship with Sun Wukong. The following is my personal guess about the plot: Since most of the plots of Zixia Fairy and Sun Wukong in Journey to the West are tragedies.Players may recover their previous memories by finding the fourth sister in the Heavenly Palace(Because some versions of Sun Wukong caused havoc in the Heavenly Palace because of the death of Fairy Zixia.)So the fourth sister will most likely die, which will lead to the plot of havoc in heaven. Maybe Game Science will give players a chance to save the fourth sister?”
Watching this when I was young, it saddened me that Monkey King could not end up with his true love. Years later, I am understanding the ending more. Monkey King sees his stubborn human reincarnated self making the same mistake he made in the past which he deeply regrets. In his human body, he is able to finally confess his true love for her, an act he does for both him and his human self. Monkey King finally gets his closure and can finally move on to fulfill his destiny of gathering the scriptures from the west.
I Am a gifted shaman and born in the year of a Monkey so I really felt some type of way with this movie, it’s character, and especially this song. I’m feeling soulfully connected,,and some type of way in a different dimension.
Anyone can translate the music? I really wanna know the lyric in English version. This is the saddest ending from stephen chow movie that he ever made. I can feel the pain from this movie ending

realmente es un tema muy nostalgico y tracendente, uno piensa que se puede aburrir, pero hace latir a tu corazon aunque no entiendas y te hace sentir nostalgico, aunque aun estees en la flor de tu juventud
Years later and even though I don't particularly remember how there two of them whe he's them, (something to do with time travel) it still hits me in the feels.
When MK looks back to the Zhia holding another man and is happy, that hurt my fucking soul. He knows she loves her and knows that she cannot be with him. So he decided to free both of them in his own terms for the better good. What a masterpiece from Stephen Chow.

But I love this ending, especially after all these years you understand the movie better. I always thought that final kiss was sad because you can see how much pain he was in, physically and emotionally. It was as though the crown itself was crushing his skull because he really wanted that kiss and also emotionally because he rejected her kiss.
Beautiful movie and thanks so much for the upload. I don't know why after all these years I suddenly wanted to rewatch this again lol... it's still so beautiful after all this time with the music, the way he play both character as the Monkey King, just the facial expression along with her look at the end at him as though she knew him... that part will always be my favorite moment in the movie because it's so sad
lol me too,
You aint alone bro
Athena Chu is still pretty
Ya she's incredibly beautiful in this
"He looks like a dog", the deep sadness could only be understood by a grown up that were tortured and domesticated by reality.
This is sadder everytime I watch it...One of the best movies of all time. A classic take on Journey to the West
Indeed. Do we see true happiness sparkling in Chow's eyes any longer since he broke up with Chu? It's such a salty, pitty feeling coming from this scene. In this artificial world, mistake could be fixed, but not the real world. I wonder if he ever watches this scene time after time till now.
When monkey king’s flashback of the time he pushed zixia away while he was joker, he told himself “I don’t want to make the same mistake again”
I didn’t understood this scene when I was a kid. As an adult, this scene hits the feels.
It's the most perfect movies ever.
she got the happy ending they never had .
Surely The Deep Ending Hurts The Emotional Point More 💔
What you said makes sense and doesn’t make sense at the same time. I cry for Monkey King every time I watch this! 😭
@@esvalor2003because joker is the human form of mk. So when joker died by the spider lady the body got reincarnated but Mk remain .mk remembers everything but reincarnated joker don’t love her . That why mk enter new joker and forced the feelings onto joker and gave her the happy ending they should’ve have if he had just kissed her in the past .
Why is monkey king sad
Stephen chow and Cecelia Cheung king of comedy is a great movie too..great ending.. this two movies of Stephen chow really have great endings
@@ex0duzz it didnt come out of nowhere though. The whole 2 movies literally building up to this scene.
A hero must sacrifice everything to become legend.
Heavenly sent 😙😙😙😙😙
Nice video with an excellent ending 👍👍👍👍
*Cries*
Ridiculously underrated movie of comedy, fate and love.
Hands down to this ending. There's not a whole lot of good endings out there. This gotta be on the top of most of your list.
The remake was complete garbage. I couldn't even watch more than 20min of it. But this version I watched a dozen times and never gets old.
Yeah... Agree 1000%
Yup thats why I bought both part 1 n 2 here on TH-cam so I can re-watch it over n over again.
for real
Same..
The biggest punishment is never be able to be with the one you love

Rewatched this several times and i just found out how deep this was 😭 greatest script of all time
they even did a bait and switch with the female lead - we were made to root for the Bone Demon as his true love, but then in Part 2 we were introduced to the real female lead and started rooting for her. truly amazing writing, directing, casting and acting there
The past fades away from the present and will not return
The scarlet leaves lie within the dusts

Zixia is an immortal fairy, she can't die so she wait for Joker to be reborn only to chase him again. At least Wukong was able to help both of them reconcile.
everyone has experienced hurting their love one when still young....after getting older...then only realized that we had missed and passed the timing of the loving that right one..and regret.... if giving another second chances.... but that's is no way...time passed has no way of return...
No journey to west is as good as this version.
Best movie ever. Still brings back the feels.
why so little comments on this stunning video!!! ahhhh it enrages me that people are ignorant to the sentiment here, come on to god fellow humans , true love and that ability to walk away for the others own good though it destroys hearts!! if that isnt true to every principle that should be in use on our amazing planet then i dont know what is!!!!
The scene when he gets closer to her and her heavy breathing is every drama and every guy's dream
Lol

Some time you have to let go your love one to fulfill your responsibilities. Been there. Its hurt like hell
Yes, like firefighters, soldiers, do they have the same sadness when they go to war, and like the monkey king, they want to kiss their loved ones tightly because no one can be sure if this is the last kiss
I love this take of The Chinese Odyssey (Journey to The West)...there's also this one that I loved "A Chinese Tall Story"
The practical effects and stunts are so much better in this movie than that crappy new cgi that Chinese movies use now. And yes, Although very brief, this had the best version of the Monkey King.
This movie never old. After watching for many times this movie always touch my heart.
Mr Stephen Chow So Amazing And Very Talented.
I Love Mr Stephen Chow Film Movie👍👍👍👍👍

A must watch HK class film from the 90s. The current HK films of this era are not as memorable
Why old Hong Kong movies are so good even they don't have fancy budget/CGI? The OST, Casts, Story, fight, etc. This freaking ending OST makes the ending so sad to watch.
Because at that time we still use films not like now digital. Film is very classic way to take a video at that time.
Comedy with heart scenes, when u laugh there is a trace of reality u find in this movie
If you watched the whole movie, to know that they’re both the same guys but from different a time, makes it even more emotional
Yah ! And that things pinches more to the sentiments and hurts too much to the emotional.

Yes and found a very interesting Reddit post under the username r/black myth wukong that said
“The internal file of the Fourth Sister is in Chinese pinyin: Qixiangu(Seven Fairies).
Maybe Game Science will give players a chance to save the fourth sister?”
chinese odyssey is a stephen chows greatest work
Watching this when I was young, it saddened me that Monkey King could not end up with his true love.
