Whatever comment you're making about me looking like a dickhead or my office being untidy or whatever it is, believe me it's already gone through my head a thousand million times. I'm trying something new by appearing on camera, let's see if it goes any further.
I wouldnt worry about the whole being on camera in an actually busy studio, it's refreshing change from the standard "here's my collection of games filling up my collection of billy bookcases" or "sterile rgb lit studio that feels as pristine clean as it does devoid of any love or life", so it's appreciated to see a studio room that actually looks like it get used as a studio when the camera *isn't* rolling :)
IIRC, the autosave feature for Jak X Combat Racing corrupting the memory card file if not the entire memory card was centered around which release of the title you had and the issue extended across likely all models as I found this out when enjoying some revived online multiplayer on a couple -39001 units. I believe the greatest hits for whatever reason didn't come with that issue, when speaking from an NTSC point of view.
To be faIr, both the Master System 2 and Mega Drive 2 can't play some Master System or Mega Drive games. And apparently some games that don't work on the SMS1 as well. Also my slim is a 70000 so I'm officially a good person.
I meant to comment on Patreon earlier. New format looks good. You seemed natural and pretty much what I would expect from your voice over delivery. I do also enjoy watching game footage while you talk too.
The Slim 70xxx series were also booby trapped, even with original discs. Sony implemented a dumb idea using the "Mechacon" to try and thwart dvd-r copies via modchips and did so by frying the laser on purpose. Laser Diode fixes were done and a Matrix PIC that would shutdown the console when it detected a power surge on the laser coil, which would ultimately kill it, if it succeeded. This back fired and was later changed in the next MB revisions.
this was only on scph-70011/70012 systems with mechacon 6.00 and 6.02 not the scph-70001 systems which had the fix introduced with mechacon 6.04 as I remember that
I had a 75001 as a kid as my first PS2. Also I distinctly remember this model having a glitch with Jak II (not X) in which I wasn't able to progress any further, though my memory is fuzzy on specifics.
Talking about memory cards being corrupted & unusable, I have resurrected them before, using firmware flashing to restore the memory card firmware eliminating file corruption. My thought on why some games won't work with newer firmware PS2's is, hacking exploits were found in game code, & new hardware firmware attempts to patch this, but ends up breaking the game.
This topic fascinates me, console revisions introducing incompatibilities. Ive read about later revisions of the SNES (one chip version) and the Genesis (model 2 and 3) having glitches or incompatibilities with some games.
This is the reason I never had any issues then, all the games you mentioned I have never heard of or played. I just played the games that were worth playing which were all the Bratz games, Jeopardy, Wheel Of Fortune, and the Pippa Funnel horse games. They worked perfectly fine on all PS2 revisions. So, happy days for me.
In the early PS-1 days check this out , some Midway titles had difficulties or out right would freeze at logo screens and not play at all on original PSX and PS-1 DualShock consoles , no joke , example try to find a PS-1 system to play WarGods on ,and point out the ones that will not run it , , , ,also on MK-Trilogy some PS-1 units will not show fighter endings , ,that's somewhat significant , , , 👍👍👽
Great video 👍. I never knew about that problem but I now appreciate my fat PS2 and talking about them brought back so many memories. The first thing I bought, with my first pay packet, from my first job in 2001. God I am getting old...I take it back... Terrible video reminding me of my own mortality.
If I remember correctly, Gran Turismo 4 was pretty bad with getting to run on PS2s in general, considering it required the disc technology that mostly later models would have due to its double layered disc, but later models also had the issue of just not being able to play it at all, so thats noice
Thank you so much for this informative video. I have read before about some PS2 slims not being able to play some PS2 games but didn't seriously test it. As all my collection work just fine on my 7500 unit. Then I tried Beyond Good & Evil on my system it showed the same sound issues in this video! I am surprised not a lot of people angry about this. A PS2 system that can't play PS2 games ? I also own a PS2 7700 unit and I can confirm the sound bug still exists. Good thing I own some fat units. From now on I'll be using them to make sure I get the full experience. Good job, SONY!
As is often the case with YT, you find things a good while after the content was created. Nevertheless... This video felt like a mental tug of war for me. Not quoting specifics but... "It's a big deal the PS2 doesn't play PS2 games". "It was the end of PS2 so, not actually a big deal". "Certain games were unplayable or might cause the need to format your memory card!". "It was the developers own fault really for working outside Sony's guidelines, so not really Sony's doing". "Let's not forget the time Sony released a PS2 that could NOT play PS2 games!"... 🤔 Irrespective, this was a well put together and informative watch, nonetheless. Cheers 👍
6:13 yup, RIP my memory card, kinda. If only we were able format the card from the bios menu everything would be fine but it was not possible. So after couple years, after corupting my card, I soft moded my PS2 and formated my memory card via homebrew software and the card was good as new.
Oooooh I remember having corrupted data on my memory card (although this happened on a phat and a I can't remember the game), but I do have a solution if anyone ever has this issue: Datel's Max software (such as Action Replay Max or Max Drive) can actually format drives, which will remove the corrupted data. You can also use this tool to copy the intact saves to another memory card or a USB drive before doing so meaning you don't lose anymore data. Hope this helps!
1) Very interesting subject matter, great text. Not a lot of complaining, nice ambient again the use of which I love since the GT video. 2) I thought your tempo and expression really really contributed to the text, it didn't seem rigid and, on the contrary, seemed fluid enough and added something special to a "voice behind the gameplay" setup. I loved this. 3) And this maybe had to do with the fact that the sound here was wonderful. Not harsh at all, lively and full. Have a good one!
Just to add to your text blurb about Jak X in the video, (I don't know much about how the game was affected in the UK) but in the US all black label versions of Jak X have the autosave bug and the bug also affects manual saves as well as, to differentiate the fixed versus unfixed copies out here, Jak X is the only US Greatest Hits game that was placed in that line despite never selling enough to warrant so at the time as GH copies are the only fixed version of the game released over here.
@@Bransfiiiield yeah, I had a bugged copy that corrupted every save on my memory card. It wouldn't even let me delete the corrupted files so I had to reformat the memory card using a Game Shark cheat device. No matter what way I tried to save, it just infinitely sat there on the "Do Not Remove Memory Card While Saving" screen. What is even funnier, most people don't know this bug was fixed and, in the US especially, a used Black Label copy sells for more than a new, fixed Greatest Hits copy.
Thank goodness I got still my SPCH-39001 Made in Japan it's still kicking. I got my Silent Hill, Bloody Roar and Tenchu series that most were stuck on the PS2. Yeah I never trust those slim models but Good and Evil sound bit is hilarious 😂! (Purgatory of Hell)

I bought a ps2(fat) off ebay and it only played final fantasy 10 from my collection...but my other 6 games it couldn't read...but it read my 7 ps1 games so I'm confused
Was never much of a PS2 gamer, but really enjoyed this deep-dive into such a weird anomaly. Also, your face didn't ruin it Ian -- I'm as surprised as you.
I have a 77001 model but so wish I still had my fat PS2. One of these days I definitely want a fat PS2 again whenever I get a CRT Television. Not sure but seems the 77001 model supposedly has different hardware then the 75000 so I wonder if it helped games work again. I don't have a power supply to hook up my Slim PS2 so can't check. I just use my fat CECHA01 and CECHE01 PS3s for PS2 disc now.
Can't be the only system that a hardware change made a cockup like this, or devs getting to clever for their own good and using the hardware in the machines not as the maker advised or knew was possible.
Same thing happened with the Commodore Amiga. The 1200 model was supposed to be fully backwards-compatible, and was for 90%+ of all games. A few developers used the hardware in weird ways never envisaged by the designers, or relied on really specific timers in the original hardware.
I think.... It was an issue with 7000 when you tried to Modchips them ....or was just a recommendation to avoid them? I don't remember... Because I jumped from 3900 to 90010
as far as I'm aware things were updated/largely fixed for later Slims, which was basically the hardware that went into the early PS3s. So not 100% compatibility, but better than 7500x models
