  • It's the HSP BOXER 94706. Roughly USD$180, or AUD$285 as of June 2023. You get everything you need in the box, other than the batteries for the radio transmitter.
    So, it's full-featured and super cheap. And yes, you could upgrade it a bit with the money you saved on the initial purchase. The question is, should you do this, or should you instead consider saving a bit longer and getting something better?
    If the performance is at least acceptable, then the purchase may be justified. But if it can't crawl, then what's the point?! So, that's what we want to find out today: is it worthy?
    Let's test!
    What it is: HSP Boxer 94706

    Where and how do you think the "bing brands" RC models are made? In the same place as that one, also the materials are similar. Cheap doesn't means bad same as expensive doesn't means good. The design is what makes the difference, sometimes... But most fanboys can't see beyond those too facts.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a decent approximation of the subtext of this video, nicely summarised. Design choices are key and in this case, we found out that performance can be hampered by budget-driven compromise. Thankfully, fixing the thing for better performance doesn't have to be expensive.
      I'm looking forward to the next video in this series, as I've made the changes already and now need to test them. Looking forward to seeing what difference is delivered by some cuts, holes and parts.
      Indeed, that's not a bad idea for a video: RC brand genealogy and family tree. Thanks for the idea, I think that could be quite interesting. Cheers

    I got one of these used for $40. Most of the drivetrain parts are interchangeable with the redcat gen7, so I was able to put metal lockers and transmission gears. All it needed to run was a new driveshaft, redcat everest 10 was a direct bolt on. Not a bad truck for the price.

      @@IowaBudgetRCBashers it basically is. HSP is who manufactures the Gen 7 for Redcat, and most of the parts on the Gen 7 were unchanged from previous HSP designs. These parts have been around for years. Rather than buy Redcat parts, you can get most of them much cheaper by looking up the HSP part number. For the metal lockers, look up "hsp 180009". The Gen 7 Pro front CVD axles should work on this truck too, which will help improve steering.

    Cheap prices doesn't necessarily mean cheap performance, most of the price of our trucks comes from developpement and advertising costs ... however you have to be more carefulll and choose wisely. A few years ago, here in Europe we could get a rebranded SCX10.2 for half the price of Axial's (also sold in other parts of the world under RCX and.another brand I can't remember yet) ... sure there were some cost-cuttings, like "philips" screw that were pretty prone to rust, and metal shielded bearings (though still better than unprotected bearings), rebranded WP1040, a different Cherokee body and maybe a few holes here and there that weren't exactly were they were supposed to be on the rails ... but it performed as well as a SCX10.2 and you could even upgrade it with the same hop-ups (except axles covers, they used larger bearings for the diff). Unfortunately it phased out last year, now it's only available with portals ... yes, AR44 with portals without the wider stance associated with portals, with a G500 body, for less than US$250 ... and for $120 more you can even get it as an updated 6x6 UMG10 (full length chassis rails, 2-part 3rd driveshaft, rear inner-fenders acting more or less as brace) with portals and lets face it, a realist but pretty ugly body (search for Bureko 6x6 but you've been warned) ... both with a 4-ch radio with one on-off-on and lighting ... Sure the portal gears from the RTRs are filmsy, maybe they broke a bit more than others portal gears, but hardened ones are available for cheap and with little work, you can even use gears for Capra.

    Another great video mate. I had been curious about this one for a while now, I have several HSP bashers and nitro cars in my collection and all have been a lacking a little in the quality department and have spent more time on the shelf than being driven because they seem to cut cost's in a lot of the wrong places. It's a shame, because some of them could be really good entry level cars if, like you said, they spent that little bit more money when producing them. I just haven't been able to justify the time and money finding compatible parts and fixing the issues they have when I've got a lot nicer stuff from Axial, FMS, Team associated and Traxxas for not a huge amount more (Being a pensioner I usually hold off until I see them on sale for at least 40-50% off) and all those brands have way better/much more readily available aftermarket parts

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Understandable. I think there is a path to greatness for most of these cheaper models. I'm hoping it isn't a long and expensive path for this model in particular. If it isn't raining again today, I'm hoping to find out!

    Thats definitely a rebranded RGT 136100. I had one and gave it to a buddy. Servo stripped out instantly and replacement ones stalled all the time. Replaced the ESC with a used 1060 I had sitting around and added weighted beadlocks with knockoff super swampers then it was a formidable crawler. ESC fixed the stall issue and the aftermarket servos gave me much more steering angle.
    Front diff stripped out twice where the driveshaft went in. Finally found a Redcat all metal diff that fit perfectly.

      You've got me wanting to take a closer look at both together, too. For sure they're similar, but there are differences. The steering is mechanically inhibited on this one, for example, while the 136100 has more throw without needing to cut plastic or change screw locations, etc.

    It is certainly getting harder and harder to tell where to draw that line. Sometimes the Chinese brands are incredibly cheap and seem too good to be true. I often look at the Chinese market prices on Taobao as my guide. If you see the prices of Cross-RC trucks in China for example, that is a good guide. It is amazing how low the prices are on those but even accounting for the price of shipping they are still a great deal. My cheapest buys to date have been a FeiYue buggy and a HengGuan truck. In both cases I was prepared for the worst but my expectations were exceeded. I have also been looking recently at the Austar AXX4 which seems to be a great product for the price.

      My video is every bit as special as your thoughtful comment here - it's your take on things. Just like this video is mine. And, since I'm a nationally-ranked competitive driver in this class of vehicle, hopefully my opinions have some utility for people.
      And also of course, my obstacle course here, the '6-Problems', is something that I've used to test most crawlers on the market. So now my channel gives you a useful idea of capability compared to most others from the big brands. So here, you can see what it's like on the rocks compared to all the others.
      I bought this with my own money so opinions about the car are hopefully as unbiased as possible. That's the aim - even for sponsored videos on the channel, my condition of accepting a car for review is that I'll give my full and honest opinion. That's not negotiable.
      That's why my video is different to any hundreds of others out there on this truck - not that I'm aware of any of them. I make a point of not watching other reviews as I want my thoughts to be fresh and genuine. Hope it was helpful, that's the goal. Cheers

    From what I remember, HSP, RGT and FTX all have similar cars, depending where in the world you are.
    There was a really nice car they made a couple of years ago, called the Pangolin. That's was very similar to the FTX Mauler, but had 4ws, straight from the box.
    The controller is also the same as the older FTX models, and the tread on the tyres appears to be the same as the Mauler. The steering issue is exactly the same as the Mauler, and you'll get a few more degrees by shaving down the steering stops.
    The Remo Hobby Axial Honcho and Deadbolt clones were really good, and the chassis's were again, very similar to the HSP, RGT and FTX cars.
    And the Paso is an awesome little car!! Just received the Hyrax clone tyres and put them on a set of alloy beadlocks, and it made such a difference.

      HSP is an OEM of all these cheapies. FTX is just peddling cheap chinese stuff with a premium. It's just not worth it to try and save pennies on these things. After couple of chinese off brands and spending too much time and money to make them usable I realised that Traxxas/Arrma/Element price is more than justified. These cars are trash.

    Well. That was unexpectedly disappointing. Seems like it didn't even perform as well as the RGT EX136100 RC4 V2, which to my untrained eye seems very similar. I see other commenters saw the same similarities. One would expect them to perform similarly as well.... and here we are. NOPE.
    With your clear and honest review in hand, I can't see any justification to get this if the EX136100 RC4 V2 is still available. That one costs less and can do more. No brainer. Makes me glad we already have the EX136100 for the kids. Probably going to have to get several more as we keep adding kids to the herd.
    Anyway, another stellar video as always. Thank you for the excellent work, it has once again been a genuine pleasure to share your thoughts and experiences. See you on the next one.
